  • Good for portable A/C unit hoses
Size Name: 6"X8 FT Color: Gray
A kind Amazon Customer answered my question and said that this "duct silencer" would be suitable to insulate the hose on a portable air conditioning unit. My hose tends to get hot, as I've read is common with these units, and thus reduces the amount of cooling the unit can produce. So far so good! In order to get one slinky hose into the other slinky hose, it is helpful to compress both of them first. Also, these A/C units have 4 ft hoses, so the 8 ft that comes in this package is a bit too much, though you might be able to squeeze it all in there. I chose to cut it down, but I did not measure 4 ft. Instead, I extended them both, laid them down side by side in a relaxed position, and cut to length that way. Then I used duct tape to seal the cut end. However, do not do what I did and cut the "duct silencer" without wearing appropriate protection, as the inside is indeed fiberglass material. Also, this item is made in China, and came to me extremely dusty. ... show more

  • Excellent Upgrade for Portable Air Conditioner
Size Name: 6"X8 FT Color: Gray
The stock hoses for my portable (two-hose!) air conditioner had disintegrated, and I've long been considering buying a set of insulated hoses for it ever since I bought the unit. I'm honestly surprised that they were not insulated at all out of the box. As such, I bought two of these hoses in 6"x8'. Installing them onto the original hose adapters was a bit of a task, entailing very liberal application of duct tape. This done, I connected them up and powered the unit up. I did not buy these hoses with the intent of being quiet, but I was honestly and pleasantly surprised by how much quieter the condenser side fan was now. I can barely hear it anymore, and it quickly subsides under the sound of the compressor once pressure builds. With the original hoses, it was easily the loudest part of the entire air conditioner. I cannot measure the thermal performance directly versus the original hoses, due to the original hoses having disintegrated years ago as of me writing this review. However, I can definitely say that, before, it was actually hot behind the unit. With these, it's significantly cooler, and the unit's performance has significantly improved. It can now actually cool my garage! Something it used to struggle with. The hoses have also survived from a durability standpoint significantly better than the original plastic hoses. Although they ARE a little less convenient to store when the air conditioner's not in use thanks to their bulk. That's the only "negative", other than the admittedly improvised installation, that I can even say about them. Final Answer: If you have a portable air conditioner and use it with any regularity, upgrade it to insulated hose(s) now. You will not regret it. ... show more

  • Excellent sound-deadening properties
Size Name: 4"X4 FT Color: Gray
I had installed an inline duct fan (also from Amazon) between the house and a home laboratory in the garage, installing it in a storage cabinet to keep it out of the way. This project was mainly to provide a bit of heat in the winter and cool in the summer from the air-conditioned house, but I also put a furnace filter inline to keep house dust out of the lab. Although the fan was rated as "very low noise," what we did hear in the house was still annoying. So much so that I reduced the voltage to the fan to make it quieter, although that meant that not much air was being moved. But once I added this 'hose silencer' between the fan and the house the noise dropped dramatically, enough so that now the fan is back to running at full speed and is barely audible in the house. The noise level is now below the SPL range that I can measure, but I'd say it dropped at least 15dB, and the attenuation seems to be broadband, in that moving-air noise and low-frequency resonance of the ducting are both reduced. Good product! ... show more

  • Effective
Size Name: 4"X4 FT Color: Gray
I installed an HRV (heat recovery ventilator) that made a lot of duct noise. This silencer reduced the noise to a quiet whisper. It is 4 feet long. When ordering, I wondered if it would be possible to shorten it. After receiving it, I don't think so. At least not advisable. Also, I think it should be extended its full length to get the full benefit of its sound reducing capability. One benefit is it is flexible. A gentle bend is better for noise reduction than a sharp one. I didn't know where the best location to install it would be. I installed it at the ventilator on the side serving the house. I didn't try other locations as the noise reduction was perfect. However, I did try it on the house exhaust and the house supply and it worked well in either location. However, a silencer was needed on both of those ports. As I didn't have experience with these silencers, I also ordered VIVOSUN 4 Inch Noise Reducer Silencer from Amazon. It worked equally as well. I don't have a preference. I did not measure the air flow before and after, so I can't comment on whether there was any loss of CFM. ... show more

  • Portable air conditioner insulation
It's not the prettiest thing on the planet but I bought it to help cool the exauhst hose on my portable a/c. Normally, it would take easily 20 minutes for my ac to cool my small bedroom from 81 to 76 degrees and I live in California. Withinn 5 minutes of installing, it cooled the room down. I didn't use anything to seal it with. It was pretty snug around the hose. I didn't need to cut anything either. Happy so far! ... show more

  • Only ends 3" diameter, hose itself is 5"diameter
Size Name: 3"X4 FT Color: Black
I got my 3" HVAC hoses for the thermal insulation because my current ones had non, just thin plastic flexible shell, and while this one looks like the thermal insulation will work good the plastic outer shell is rather weak same as old ones, I saw a minor cut and taped it up, air was escaping and the actual hose itself is 5" diameter not 3, which is relevant if you have space constraints other than the coupler. The coupler or ends if you can call them that are just taped up to the size of 3 in and you kind of got to work it out and stretch it out and put some effort into getting the tape ends to where you can actually make a short sleeve of them to slide over and clamp them onto where they are meant to go, because it's just a taped circle on the end that is bunched up heavily wrinkled and a bit stiff due to tape thickness ... show more
