  • The Best Roofer
I have a bunch of these and they are bulletproof. They work for a really long time (like 7 years full time roofing) with almost no repairs. When you do have to repair them the key wear parts like trigger valves are easy to find and cheap. For example the bostitch trigger valve retails for around 35 bucks the Hitachi ball and o ring for their trigger is about 10 bucks. A word of caution don't buy the light weight model unless you are a complete pansy because it is not nearly as good. Here are some competitors guns and briefly what I think as I have owned most of them: Bostitch- big and fat but not bad. Not many pros use them after using a Hitachi. Porter Cable- When you need to buy parts think of a outrageously high price then double or triple it. Compounded by their bad parts shipping times. You might want to get your gun going in less than 2 weeks if you are using to make money.( they aparently really ticked me off) Max- excellent tool as good as the Hitachi some may even say better but their parts stock isn't nearly as good. And lets face it if you are going to use the gun much eventually you will need parts. Makita- When did they start making air tools. Band wagon to the left please. Dewallet- Part issues anyone ? nice yellow black and Decker. Paslode- I hate every paslode I have ever tried. Big cheap and a cylinder which is soft and wears like cheap pantyhose. Even the impulse which is a great concept if you didn't have to constantly clean it and send it away to get it fixed because suddenly after you clean it the tool suddenly quits. If you are looking for a good gun try the Hitachi. I am positive you will like it. (As much as you can like a tool that will make you do a crappy job like roofing). ... show more

  • Hate to review the hitachi this way because I have ...
Well I was told that maybe the gun needs to be broken in. Well, it's broken in, right in my dumpster. Warranty is out and the gun would never feed right even brand new. Hate to review the hitachi this way because I have a lot of their other air and electric tools and love the durability of them. I will say this coil nailer is built like a tank, but it always took about 20 nails in a 2x4 to get loosened up enough to feed. Then it was fine until the next day. Same problem every morning I tried it. It spent a little over 5 years with me and every time it disappointed me. Did probably 50 jobs over 5 years and finally had enough. I did find out that even though it is heavy you can still throw it pretty far when you are on the peak! Shame on you Hitachi. ... show more

  • The best of the best
I have used many Hitachi roofing guns over the years when I did this for a living, I am more of a weekend warrior in the roofing game for friends and family now. The reason I speak so highly of these guns is they are built to last, easy to service and performs at all speeds. They are also easier to handle, well balanced, lighter weight, etc. I have used most competitors guns out there and this is simply the only gun you will ever see me buy or recommend to a friend. If you are doing a one off job, spend the money, you will get it back when you sell it and you will run into a lot less problems. There is nothing worse then tools that give you problems when you are trying to get a job done. This gun will not give you problems, a little bit of oil and some air and you are good to go. It will feed all coil nails, cheap or expensive, it just wants to drive them home and move on. To you roofers out there, I bet you cannot find a better gun to skip along, this has the perfect bounce, weight and feedrate of any gun out there. ... show more

  • Runs very well.
This wire collated nailer, once it is tuned and adjusted, sends most of the nails to whatever depth is needed. In my last roofing project I had to hammer in about one in fifty nails. And in the rapid fire setting I seldom had any double firings. This is pretty good, all things considering. It seems to do well despite use in temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 110 degrees Farenheit, I'd guess the steel wire collation to be the reason that it works so well in varying temperatures, since steel won't get soft nor brittle in this temperature range. Lubrication need seems very consistent. A few drops of oil every time I added a new roll of nails seemed to be about right. Unlike a framing nailer I reviewed recently there don't seem to be any lubrication-related problems. Air pressure need also seems consistent. It seemed to run best at about 85 PSI, i.e. varying between 80 and 90. This is a good sized air pump for those who are interested: Makita MAC2400 Big Bore 2.5 HP Air Compressor This is a lightweight tool, so has some plastic parts which would not bear dropping nor banging around too much. Hence the 4 star instead of 5 star rating. I also wish they would separate the various languages in their instruction manual so they were not physically attached together. It would be nice to throw away all the unused multilanguage instructions. (Centigrade lovers: you can do the Farenheit to Centigrade calculation yourself C= or some semblance thereof. Metric-philes: I don't know how many kiloPascals equal 80 PSI, nor do I care - I don't like to calculate powers of ten while on a roof. In fact I really don't like to calculate powers of ten anywhere, any time. It is unnatural. Think about this the next time you're lying helpless in the hospital and your young nurse comes in at the end of her 12 hour shift to interpret your doctor's handwriting and decide whether to give you 100mEq or 100mg of KCl plus either 10 or 100 or 1000 or 10000 or 100000 units of Heparin in either 1 or 10 or 100 cc of saline into your central I.V. line. Is that a decimal point or a spot on the paper?) ... show more
