  • "Heavenly sound though a pair of tin cans."
Sound wise these are far and away the best sounding headphone I have ever tried. The sound is presented so diffusely that it almost sounds more like a pair of speakers sitting in front of you than a pair of headphones on your ears. The detail presented is fantastic, and the timbre is very natural. Violins and other higher-pitched instruments in particular are very true to life. That said, they are also the least isolating headphone I have ever owned. Any outside sounds WILL leak in, and your music WILL leak out. There is no getting around that, but it is a sacrifice for such clarity. Now for the bad stuff. I say they are tin cans because they really aren't built that well. At the very least, not $3000 build quality. The aluminum finish can be a little spotty in places, and the silicone-like glue they use to seal the unit is really noticeable/ugly. The wood veneer that they use looks so-so, but it feels very fragile. The ear pads don't feel that nice either (the pleather is kind of cheap feeling), and were asymmetrical on my unit. The headband is okay, but I have heard that the screws that hold them on strip and break very easily. Most notable for me, the hinges that let the ear cups swivel became very squeaky after two weeks of use. It was very annoying since they would squeak every time I moved my head/put them on. I suspect some lubricant would fix the issue, but I shouldn't have to do such a thing for something that costs so much. Comfort wise, I'd say they start off clamping a little harshly, but around a week of constant use, it becomes way more comfortable. The ear cups are large and deep enough even for my freakishly large ears. Overall, I'd say that they are worth getting only if you don't value the build of the headphones too greatly. I do like how they look, I just wish they were built to match. ... show more

  • Bench Mark Headphones
I am a hopeless audiophile. I have owned many, many headphones. I maintain the Sennheiser HD-800 is the best headphone you can buy. The most bang for the buck. The Hifiman HE1000V2 is the first headphone I have tried that rivals the HD-800. As we know, it's all very subjective, but I don't think anyone that buys the HE1000's will be disappointed. Now that mine are broken in, I am immensely pleased I purchased them. They have quickly become my go to bench mark headphones. ... show more

  • Sound great, but are they built like they sound?
The pair I received was poorly made. The veneer on one of the ear cups was lifted at the edge. I could see the glue. In addition, I could see a razor blade cut on the surface of that edge. I mean, really, $3000 and I see this kind of craftsmanship. They're a good sounding headphone, but I could buy a $100 pair of Sennheisers which I'm sure have better build quality standards. ... show more

  • Sound is amazing! Build soso
The headphone sounds really good. The clarity is amazing. Issue I have are build quality. The wood trim isn't perfect and ear pads are not even, for 3 grand it should be. So that's it for build issues. If the sound wasn't amazing I would return them. I put them up against Audeze LCD X, LCD 2C, Focal Elex (massdrop for those that don't know), and Fostex T60rp. He-1000 v2 beats them easily. ... show more

  • Beautiful mids. Not “full mids”, not even “delicate mids”, just beautiful mids.
- from our full review on audioooh.com - check it out for head to head comparisons In the quest for the ultimate headphone experience less the $50,000, here are the key points of the HE1000 V2. Bass extension. The lowest registers of drums don’t blur out – you can hear the full contour of the sound. Such depth is rarely heard because either speakers fail to produce it, or if they do, your chest was too busy feeling it for your ears to listen. Bass resolution. The HE1000 bass has a quality of purity that needs to be separated from pure extension – the base is clear and tight, but never thick. Part of that perception is likely due to hearing crappy overhung bass notes everywhere, and part of it has to do with the characteristics of the open-back design. If you’ve heard dipole speakers like Magnepans, you’ll know that there’s a particular quality to the bass in addition to the quantity present at any particular frequency. Fundamentally, HE1000 makes bass becomes just another note, not a muddy body-slam. Beautiful mids. Not “full mids”, not even “delicate mids”, just beautiful mids. It’s like a high resolution SET is playing – that feeling where you just admire how darn pretty the sound is. An additional benefit of this midrange property is that you can easily enjoy many subpar recordings or mp3’s that other headphone render painful. There are limits to this statement, but in general, these phones pull off an amazing combination of resolution, and smoothness. If you’ve heard speakers from BG (Bohlender Graebener) they have a very similar quality, and indeed those are also planar magnetic designs. Sonic detail – not just treble detail. This is likely a function of the low-mass diagram and excellent damping. Your attention can roam around the spectrum as the music plays, to admire any particular aspect of the song, to appreciate transitions and overlays the moment the spring up, due to the excellent sound-staging instrument separation. I would say the some of the Stax phones have even more detail, but we're talking about resolution at the really high frequencies, and it's not enough to overcome their other issues and the associated cost increase. One ergonomic point I'd like to call out. Compared to any other planar headphone, the entire HE line has highly adjustable clamping pressure, which you'll appreciate on long listening sessions. To get the full range of adjustability, you can bend the spring steel of the headband around till you get pressure you like. Conclusion Of course you want this headphone. The question of whether you would purchase a direct alternative comes down to if you want a ton of bass, in which case there is Audeze or a hankering for the cool beryllium woofer from Utopia, in which case there’s the Utopia. Overall, the v2 is a piece of equipment that lets you lose yourself in the music, which is the whole point. In particular if you listen to well produced electronic music, the beauty of the mids is going to show you all of the detail there, with a richness that’s just perfect. That’s why the HE1000 remains a headphone I don’t have the upgrade itch…. now that it’s been upgraded to the v2. ... show more
