Description

Size:5in 1. Use highest quality ductile Iron 80000 PSI for minimum bending. 2. The enclosed lead screw and sliding surface are harden and ground. 3. Highest clamping power. It's very accurate and durable. 4. This vise is so designed that the horizontal force generated by tightening the handle pushes the semi- sphere within the movable jaw and thus thrusts the movable jaw downward. The workplace does not move up, even if it is held at the top of the jaw plates. 5. Four setting positions of the jaw plates are available, widening the jaw plates opening. • and it's a good deal for what you get
Size: 6in
Very coarsely finished, with casting sand still embedded in the internal cavities of most of the castings. There are also a number of relatively small but present voids in the ground surfaces, though none in any of the sliding faces I could see. The machining on every non visible surface is also very rough. After a complete disassembly, cleaning, and breaking all the sharp edges with a file, it looks to be a completely serviceable, if low quality vise. OTOH, for the price that's exactly what I expected, and it's a good deal for what you get. If you're ok doing some manual cleanup, this looks to be a fine vise. ... show more

  • Good buy with no regrets
Size: 4in
For the price, this vise is unbeatable. As has been noted, packaging isn't so hot, but Amazon put the box in another box, and nothing arrived damaged. The T-head bolts that came with mine are all 9/16", which is perfect for my Smithy CB-1220XL. I left the included keys off, since I'm mounting the rotating base at an angle to center it better over my 6" cross slide. If I decide to use them later, I'll have to mill them down a bit, since they are 0.550" wide and the tops of my 9/16" slots are 0.500". I debated for weeks over what size to buy, but the 4" appears to be my best choice. Without the rotating base, the vise is almost the width of my cross slide— the 5" would have been too big. When I first mounted it to the Smithy, tramming off the fixed jaw showed it was 'way out of spec, but it turned out that the jaw had been mounted crooked, easily readjusted to square. Tramming off the base (where it really counts), there's less than a thousandth variation, x and y. Ground surfaces are smooth enough and the action, after some cleaning and lube, is fine. The pin holding the handle to the socket is completely loose, so I will have to add a roll pin to keep it together. The screw head is 12mm hex, so it's easier to use a ratchet wrench, anyway. As others have noted, tightening the jaw does push the work up rather than down as the description claims. A few taps with a hammer helps, but parallels go loose no matter how much I tap. It appears to be an even rise, though. The scrap of steel in one of the pictures was originally a wedge-shaped piece of waste. After milling it with this vise, the sides are parallel to within 0.001 over the length, so I'm happy. ... show more

  • Fantastic Value
Size: 4in
I don't see any way to rate less than 5 stars. I was prepared to be disappointed but I gave it a shot based on reviews. Fit and finish well exceed price point. Function is smooth, machined surfaces look properly finished. Vise arrived with jaws accurately adjusted and only basic cleanup was required before using. This is not a made in USA vise but supporting a hobby I can't always justify paying 4 times more. There's no tick mark to reference against the base. There's a machined surface but no mark. This is the only flaw I'm aware of. I'll use this on a recently refurbished 60's era drill press. It should exceed my needs. If something changes I'll update this review. 5/17/17 After some use this tool continues to impress. I'm using with a set of parallels and work is more enjoyable. The end of the screw is cut to 12mm, a 12mm deep socket fits snugly. I added an adapter and now use a small 10V cordless drill to open and close the vise quickly. I still use the provided handle to tighten but opening the vise wide open and closing takes a only few seconds with a drill. The idea came from seeing guys use cordless drills to operate knee crank on milling machines. Small drill with 12mm socket can hang off the end of the screw without issue. Hope this helps somebody. ... show more

  • Absolute steal. I can't believe how good it is at this price.
Size: 4in
I couldn't be much happier with this vise for the price. HUGE upgrade from the sturdy but not precise vise that came with the mill. With my Starrett Last Word dial test indicator I get almost half a thousandth of runout in the middle of the fixed jaw when tramming it in. The ends both read 0 while the center is just very slightly dished. For anything I expect to be doing that is tremendously good. I do not yet have a way to precisely measure them for square, but with every precision square and 1-2-3 block I own I cannot detect any flaw. Only things that I feel would improve it without really adding to the expense would be: 1. *Very* slightly taller jaw inserts. There's barely enough there to clamp a stop block or machinist's clamp to for repeatable positioning across multiple parts or multiple operations. Just an extra 1/8" inch or so would make this more useful. It is usable in that way as-is, but requires a little extra time and care to get it on right. 2. There is a graduated scale on the base, but no indexing mark on the actual vise body, and no hard lines in the casting to allow anything close to an accurate reading. I realize that will never be used for precise alignment (far better to clamp a precision angle or sine bar and then tram off of it), but for some operations being within half a degree is plenty accurate. Like I was making a "poor man's power feed" cordless drill adapter for my mill the other day. Picture a ring divided into six parts, with every other part being on either the mill or the handwheel. If you're reading a review on a mill vise you've probably seen this arrangement before, but the term for it escapes me right now. Anyway, it just needed to be rotated about 60 degrees between operations. Even a full degree wouldn't have much impact on the final performance since I did the actual fitting with a hand file. But I didn't have a way to easily dial in those changes and instead had to use a cold chisel to mark it myself. And it came out very slightly angled, which is fine but annoys me. That's it. Other than those two minor issues, and after one month of intermittent use, I have no complaints. This is a great size vise for a round column mill (5" would also work but was substantially more expensive, and for occasional larger parts I can either move the jaws to the outside positions or just clamp directly to the table) and hobbyist work. Just buy it already! ... show more
