  • Beautifully constructed game and wonderful concept; yet....
My middle, high school, and college students were quite impressed with the craft-woman-ship of the game. The materials are visually stunning, of excellent quality, and are visually and tactilely pleasing to hold. The 120 featured women really opened our eyes and sparked engaging research and conversation. However, the game rules and materials, as presented, leave something to be desired. Basically, it is a matching game of cards and tiles. Which is good for little kids and non-readers (until the end when they have to share their cards), but not at all exciting for players who can read. Despite the high-quality physical appearance and feel of the materials (the neoprene board and really durable pieces and cards), matching icons and tiles is not attention-keeping. So, after just a few hours of playing, here is what we came up: Each student takes three cards from the deck (more or less depending on class size, students' abilities, and motivation). Then, using the icons on the cards (research, quote, etc.) the students go off on their own or in pairs, read the back of the cards; then research the featured women on the Net for 10-20 minutes finding an equal number of relevant information to the icons on the card. For example, 1 research, 1 quote, 2 interviews. Option 1) take that information and go back to the group and present what they have learned Option 2) use Flip (formerly Flipgrid) and make a short video using PowerPoint or other presentation app. Option 3) if the student(s) have more than one card, try to find commonalities between the featured women and connect them together in a presentation or essay. (This gets them thinking about writing and speaking strategies for synthesizing information). Repeat option 1 and/or 2. For playing at home, my family and found that these options are fun for an educational game time (for an hour or so), and with 120 featured women, we have quite enough for occasional home-play. With my students, the 120 featured women give us enough variety and with a plethora of sources on the Net and in the library, even if we repeat women, each student will find unique information so there isn't too much repetition. In conclusion, Herstory is composed of very high-quality materials, it just needs some tweaking for game-play. ... show more

  • To Say This is a High Quality-Game Would Be a Serious Understatement
To Say This is a High-Quality Game Would Be a Serious Understatement My family loves educational games so we are always on the hunt for new options. We have quite a collection across a variety of subjects, but the one educational subject that is lacking on our shelves is history. So, when a new educational game centered around history hit the market, we were anxious to give it a try! When playing a new game, the first thing I always assess is the quality of the packaging and pieces. To say this is a high-quality game would be a serious understatement. The directions are thorough and laid out in a large-sized booklet with helpful images and clear steps. The "board" is made of neoprene, lays flat and rolls up easily. The research tokens, pushpin trackers and player "desks" are all colorful and solid. The chapter cards are gorgeous with vibrant images and researched information printed on thick and glossy cardstock. Heck, even the drawstring bag that holds the research tokens seems fancy with its pleather feel and scripted monogram. And, everything is perfectly organized in its thick and sturdy box. But, the quality is not just superficial! This is a well-thought-out game based on a fun, although slightly gimmicky, concept that each player is trying to write a book about remarkable women in history. Strategy is also at play here because the player with the highest-valued book (each "chapter" is assigned a value) wins the game. And, along the way, hopefully, the players are learning about some of these remarkable women. There are 120 women represented and we thoroughly enjoyed learning while we played. The collection of women included in this game varies in so many wonderful ways. Young and old. Current and ancient. Well-known and under-represented. Black and white. Rich and poor. Controversial and mainstream. Educated and not. The potential for this game is vast: Game night with girlfriends. Date night with the spouse. Free time in history glass. An unusual and unexpected gift. Homeschool break with the siblings. It's great for men and women alike and it's perfect for a wide range of ages and skill levels. The only negative I found is that learning about these amazing women is not an integral piece of the game. It's never even mentioned until the very end when the winner is supposed to read one chapter of their book to the group. But, it's an easy fix if you just add the extra step of reading each card aloud as it is drawn. ... show more

  • Great game for all ages, beautiful presentation
I saw this recommended on social media on International Women's Day and decided to pick it up. I was most impressed by the presentation of the game. Every bit of the game feels carefully crafted and well made(the game mat, the illustrations and short histories of the women on the cards, the bag the tiles are kept in, etc.). It also comes with a envelope full of gorgeous postcards, bookmarks, and stickers spotlighting some of the historical figures featured in the game. The game itself is fairly straightforward and easy to play. Each player is an author writing a book on women throughout history, and the game ends when one player finishes 8 chapters in their book. Players write their chapters by exchanging tiles with symbols on them for cards sharing those same symbols. Some cards just score points. Other cards offer fewer points initially but give the player special abilities to earn additional points in other ways. Then finally, there are cards that allow the player to pay less in tiles for future chapters (basically they offer an engine building mechanic). My only gripe with the game is it can be quite difficult to make a comeback if the board is covered in low powered cards in the mid-to-late game turns. This is especially true in two player games where fewer cards are being drafted. Overall though, it's a great all ages game. ... show more
