  • Perfect Solution for heavy radio & 2022 JEEP GC!!
So, I have a brand new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK Limited 4x4 and with less than 1000 miles on it, the last thing I wanted to do was to drill holes into the dash or any part of the jeep for that matter. My goal was to mount a Stryker 955HPC 10 Meter radio in the jeep and could still easily remove it to bring in the house as a base whenever I wanted. However, the SR-955 is longer and heavier than most CB Radios. It has a set of large heatsink thermal plates built into the back of the radio’s housing and of course, that adds to the weight, (as shown in the pics). Between the radio, (12.2” long x 8.1” wide x 2.4” thick), the radio bracket, attached cables & the mic, (RK-56B), the weight of the assembly easily exceeds 7.5lbs. Eventually, I found two in Amazon that indicated or implied they could be used to hold CB radios. Of the two, only one had very good reviews and came with a small metal bracket mounting plate. Enter the LycoGear Heavy Duty Universal, Cup-Holder Mount. This little cup-holder mount is amazingly rigid! In fact, if all you want to do is mount your tablet or cellphone, this cup-holder mount is an overkill. I think it would probably even be an overkill for one of those 12” ultra-thin laptops, providing you make a proper base-bracket for it! When you’re dealing with off-center and unbalanced weight, the fewer tilt and bend points, the better. The LycoGear Universal, Cup-Holder Mount has a minimum of adjustable points (and when dealing with 5lbs. or more of unbalanced weight, that’s a good thing). In fact, the only adjustable point on the LycoGear unit is at the ball & socket clamp system. The nearest alternative/competitor to the LycoGear had three bend/tilt-adjustment points which would almost guarantee that a radio like the SR-955 would never stay in place after a few bumps and some common road-vibrations. The LyccoGear’s base is expanded and collapsed by a collar-ring, just below the mounting plate’s ball clamp. It’s strange that in a world of “Righty-Tighty/Lefty-Loosey” the manufacturer chose to make their system just the opposite. To expand the cup-holder’s base when it’s in the vehicle’s cup-holder pocket, the collar ring must be turned counter clockwise. And then, of course, the collar-ring must be turned Clockwise to collapse the LycoGear’s base. I don’t know the maximum pressure my vehicle’s cup-holder pocket can take so, after I placed the LycoGear in the selected pocket, I turned the collar-ring CCW until I couldn’t move the mount. Keep in mind that the LycoGear’s base needs to be placed as deep into the pocket of your vehicle’s cup-holder as possible. To ensure that you do this, be sure to collapse the LycoGear’s base to its smallest diameter before inserting the unit into the vehicle’s cup-holder pocket. You’ll notice that the LycoGear’s base is stepped-down presumably to fit custom-formed cup-holder pockets that have that same shape. My 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has the spring-loaded type of pockets that will allow for large and small diameter cups, including tapered drinking cup shapes. You’ll need to use your own judgement as to how tight you make the LycoGear base expand in the pocket. Just remember your grade school science lessons about the power of leverage. Depending on the vehicle, its age, and how thick the cup-holder’s plastic walls were made, the kind of power that the LycoGear’s collar-ring employs can generate enough force to crack your cup holder if you over-do it. Therefore, if you’re planning to use the mount for a cellphone or tablet, don’t crank the collar ring to apply any more pressure than is needed to keep the device still and in place. Yet, you do need to tighten it enough to make sure the cup-holder mount doesn’t rattle up and out of the vehicle’s cup-holder pocket. You may have to take a few test-rides before you find the right tightness. The tilt adjustment for the mounting plate is a ball and socket clamp system. LycoGear uses a single bolt to keep the 2 separate, aluminum clamps together. The clamps are tightened on a hard-rubber ball by turning a large wingnut. Now here’s where I must criticize LycoGear’s choice in the length of the bolt used to tighten the clamps on the rubber ball of the mounting plate. The bolt needed to be longer because you can’t place or remove the rubber ball on the mounting plate’s stem into the clamps without completely unscrewing the clamp assembly. If I wanted to remove the mounting plate from the clamps by slipping the plate’s rubber ball out from between the clamps, I must loosen the clamps to the point where the wingnut leaves the end of the bolt and the clamps fall out. I replaced the bolt with one that was about 5/8” to 3/4” longer. Also, along with a longer bolt, they should have used a finer thread pitch. A bolt with a finer thread pitch would make it easier and need a lot less effort to turn the wingnut when tightening the clamps for holding a heavy device like my radio. The LycoGear’s mounting plate has 4-predrilled & tapped holes, (as mentioned earlier). The bolt-pattern is 30mm, (1- 3/16”) center to center, wide and 38mm, (1-1/2”), center to center, long. For the SR-955 radio bracket, that was perfect. However, it’s easy enough to drill a different bolt pattern in the aluminum plate if you need to. Alternatively, you can drill & mount a larger plate to the mounting plate that came with the cup-holder mount, and then drill the hole pattern you need in that ‘add-on plate’. In the Pics I supplied, I simply copied the bolt pattern from the mounting plate, to the SR-955’s bracket and then drilled the 4 holes. I deliberately drilled and set the mounting plate to attach to the radio bracket slightly off the radio’s center-line. That way, it shifted the radio about ½” farther away from the instrument panel of the jeep. As a retired 1st-class machinist, I tend to notice the quality of any machined worked that’s been done on a product. I must admit that the four drilled & tapped holes (I think I recall them to be 5mm tapped holes), were poorly done. I had some taps that I could use to ‘chase’ and repair the threads. (BTW; you can buy inexpensive, non-commercial quality, 5 & 6mm taps on line or a local hardware store if you need to ‘chase the threads’ as I did. The metal mounting plate, (aluminum), was sturdy and the stem and plate were molded as a single piece, (that’s the best way to insure rigidity!). After the plate/stem is removed from the mold, it’s placed in another mold where hard-rubber ball is injection-molded to the stem. This means that the entire mounting plate and ball have almost no chance of failing when clamped in place by the 2-piece socket assembly. LycoGear really did a great job of not over-engineering the system. By keeping it simple, they avoided the many ways such a mount could fail. Most of the other mounts I’ve seen had so many over-engineered characteristics, they are almost certainly going to fold-up when the inside temperatures of the car increase to over 100*F or after one or two bumps in the ride shake it loose. I strongly recommend this LycoGear Cup-holder radio mount to anyone who needs a way to mount any device, (particularly, those devices that weight more than 4 or 5 pounds), in their vehicle without having to drill holes in their dashboard. The LycoGear Cup-holder worked so well that even though I found a few issues involving the machining and the hardware selection that may have warranted a 4-star rating, the cup holder’s performance and simple engineering was so good that I must give it a 5-star rating. • exactly what I needed
mounted the control head for a HAM radio on this cup holder mount. Really impressed with how it expanded an literally locked into the cup holder receptacle. Fits tight with no movement and I can position the remote head at the angle I want and need in the car.

  • Holds pretty well
The cup holder holds very tight to the vehicle but I can shake the mounting plate a little. I built a table using two (one in each cup holder). It will tip to the side with a 15" macbook on it. I think next time I'll try ones with a 1" ball on top to get more grip.

  • Auto Cup Holder Radio Mount
I bought this for a Midland GMSR radio since I wanted to be able to swap it between my car and truck. Being powered by an auxiliary power port and having a magnetic antennae mount makes this very quick and easy. The mount expands tightly in both my Honda Crosstour and Toyota Tacoma and the radio is held solidly. Of course the location of the cupholder determines how well this will work in each case. I'm satisfied with it and think it's worth the money. ... show more

  • Fast - Solid-Simple-Quality Mount for your Amateur Radios
This radio mount is so simple and works so well. I had planned on having to drill holes and mount brackets and all I had to do was put two holes in my radio mount with a couple little bolts and it is on rock solid. The Cup holder brace is adjustable by turning a knob. Place it in the cup holder and turn the knob and it will expand locking the base and the radio into a very sturdy mount. The head then swivels in all directions so you can aim the radio into your line of sight or loosen and turn towards your passenger. If you want to take to another car. Turn the knob to loosen, unscrew the antenna and unplug and simply take it to your next car. I was impressed by the engineering and simplicity. ... show more
