  • Worldbuilding Solitaire
Harmonies is more like competitive puzzling (and isn't all that competitive at the end of the day). Players build a world/landscape out of randomly drawn wood tiles, trying to make it the most suitable for certain animals they choose. Little cubes then represent the animals that can move into their little world. The wood "environment" tiles (forest, fields, etc.) can also be stacked on top of each other, so sometimes you need to make taller trees and bigger mountains. At the end of the game you have made colorful 3D artwork to represent your puzzle biosphere. There is a lot of creativity in this aspect of the game. We found the game to be more like mutual solitaire. Someone could "steal" a piece you wanted from the main pool, but for the most part you were just doing your own thing and messing up the other person was not intentional. This got to the point that people weren't even trying to "win", they just wanted to build land that attracted the most peacocks or whatever because they liked the cute peacock card. Pros: High quality pieces and art; great for creative minds; puzzle oriented and tactile. Neutral: There can be a lot of decisions and "paralysis by analysis" for some players. We used a timer. Cons: The scoring at the end takes a while and can be a bit convoluted. Overall we found this game unique, creative, and fun. It is NOT a party game, and players may end up not talking to each other a lot during play. Age wise this might be tough for younger players unless you dumb down the rules. Kids 12 or older should do OK with it depending on what they want out of a game. ... show more

  • A delight to play, great addition to a two-player game library.
From the very first playthrough, Harmonies has proven to be a captivating gem in our board game collection. My wife and I have thoroughly enjoyed this game, thanks in part to its exceptional material quality and stunning artwork that pulls you right into its theme. The rules were straightforward, making it easy to jump right in, but don't let the simplicity fool you—there's a rich layer of strategy beneath that. The game balances the elements of chance and skill beautifully, with about 75% of the gameplay requiring thoughtful planning and 25% relying on the luck of the draw. This mix keeps each playthrough exciting and unpredictable. The game includes high-quality components and a clean, well-designed package—all at a great value. It scales perfectly from 2 to 4 players, but functions well as a 2-player game, maintaining its charm and depth without feeling like anything is missing. For those seeking a thought-provoking, beautifully themed board game, Harmonies is a top-notch choice. Highly recommended, works well for couples. ... show more
