  • Good for Chopping and Mixing but not a good machine for slicing and cubing food
Size: 14 Cups Dicing Color: Stainless Steel
I bought this machine primarily slice large amounts of carrots/tomatoes as well as the cubing disc for potatoes. I remember the machine we had when I worked in a restaurant and spent the extra money on this machine because I thought it was somewhat similar. It is not. Even though it says ‘Professional’ it really isn’t and in fact the instructions clearly state not for professional use. Overpriced in my opinion for what you get. It’s a good machine for chopping a large amount of food (i.e. Kale or Lettuce) and mixing. But that’s about it. The machine is not well designed for slicing and the cube disc is so-so. First the slicer. When you put the food into the shoot and turn on the machine the slicer shifts the food slightly so the items go into the slicer at an angle. As a result there is food stuck between the top of the slicer disc and the bottom of the lid; there is no way to keep the food straight up and down as it goes in. It is incredibly frustrating as after each item you have to turn off the machine, lift up the lid and clean the trapped food. I've wasted a lot of food. With carrots the slicer slices about half of the carrot perfectly, but then the carrot is pushed into an angle and you get horizontal slices. Not good. I think the problem is caused by too large of a space between the underside of the lid and the slicer. The cubing disc works so-so. I use it a lot for potatoes, but a standard size potato does not fit in the shoot; you have to cut it in half lengthwise. The entire potato half does not go all the way through the chopping grid, so after you run it you have to take off the lid and use a plastic 'fork' (that comes with the machine) and push the ruminants through the chopping grid. Using this feature is not very efficient as I have to do this after every potato. This seems to be another issue that is caused by too much space between the lid and the slicer. Would not recommend. ... show more

  • See the cheap broken plastic safety interrupt?....just junk.
Size: 14 Cups Dicing Color: Stainless Steel
UPDATE - I changed from 4 stars to 1 star. I am once again the proud owner of a kitchen appliance that I have to replace AGAIN. At least my Black and Decker lasted about 15 or more years. So, the motor interlock safety interrupt is made of cheap, thin breakable plastic. I don't think I'll bother replacing it as it's such a money making design that I'll just have to replace it again in a few years. HOWEVER, when a company makes something as junky and sleezy as this, I give them a chance to make it right and if not; I put them on the never purchase list forever. We'll see. As you can see below, my wife won't miss it anyway. Can't buy expensive appliances any more despite the wanted features. Just can't afford to replace the junk every few years. ------------------ I give it 4 stars. My wife however does not like it. She says it's just too large, bulky and hard to use. I suspect she'll get to like it better over time. But one of the main reasons I bought this unit is one of the reasons she doesn't like it. That is; the sealed top. That green thing is a rubber seal so that liquid will not spill out. In conjunction with that feature, there is no typical hole in the center of the bowl that would allow liquid to leak out that way. It's just a sealed spindle in the middle that the blade slides on to. I love this full-bowl, no spill feature and I made use of it making a huge batch of gazpacho the other day. We don't really need a blender for most uses any more. While the unit has suction cups that hold the unit quite steady during use, those suction cups also make it hard to slide the unit under the upper cabinets when not in use. I'd prefer a push and release suction lever so that you can slide it around when needed. It's difficult for me to slide and it also comes close to hitting the fluorescent lights beneath those same cabinets. So imagine trying to gently lift up the unit to disconnect the suction so that you can move it, but with it popping up and coming close to smashing those light bulbs. That task is nearly out of the question for my wife, so I ended up moving the unit to an area on the counter that has no cabinets above. But that area is more prominent than I would like to store a giant food processor. It's just the only thing that makes sense for us. I also put the unit on top of a smooth-surfaced, padded sliding placemat. So when I want to move the unit forward for use, I just pull on the matt, then we just push the matt toward the rear of the counter when we're done to get it out of the way. The suction cups do stick to the matt which seems to be all that's necessary. When running, the suction cups on the matt work fine. It's not like we have to hold onto the matt or it would start to walk. So, that method worked out best for us. Advice - just keep the metal blade in the bowl. Don't try to put it in the blade storage container as it is very convoluted to get it in and out of there. An engineer obviously had a ball creating that blade storage container, but bottom line is that the blade that will be used probably at least 90% of the time is most difficult to get in and out of that container. So might as well just put it in the bowl. Lastly, I like that this thing is a bruiser. I used the slicing blade and cut yams in half lengthwise and ran them through to slice up to make baked yam/sweet potato chips. Yams are pretty darned hard and it just plowed through them. Lastly, neither of us care for that big locking handle. You have to pull it up over the top of the bowl so that it clicks into place. It bothers me less than my wife and I understand its necessary function; to keep that rubber seal tight so that liquid doesn't come out. But, I think there has to be a better way to go about it. I would have tried to engineer a pull lock mechanism such that when you put the lid on, you just pull a lever that locked both sides tightly. Then that gigantic handle wouldn't be necessary. Summary: for me the power of the unit, the slicing functionality, large bowl, and the no-leak, full liquid bowl do it for me. I personally can work around the other inconveniences mentioned. ... show more

  • Not Professional In Any Sense
Size: 14 Cups Dicing Color: Stainless Steel
This is basically a high-end consumer unit, I don't believe it will stand up to the rigors of a commercial kitchen very well, we purchased it for our brewpub and I'm incredibly disappointed we spent this sort of money on it. We would have done just as well with a $50 Cuisinart. The shredder blade and safety button both broke within three weeks and getting in touch with anyone at Hamilton Beach for a replacement has been problematic. We finally shoved this on a shelf and have pretty much abandoned it. It's a very expensive shelf decoration. If you need a heavy duty unit, keep looking, this isn't it. ... show more
