  • A Reliable Surveillance Camera with Pro-Grade Features
The camera pleasantly surprised me with its functional features. Even though the web interface appears somewhat dated and relies on Internet Explorer for certain functions, the camera still performed admirably. I successfully connected it to Frigate, an open-source software for IP cameras and video surveillance devices, enabling me to access all the camera's functions. Whether it was day or night, the camera delivered good image quality, proving that a 3MP sensor can sometimes outshine 4K counterparts by capturing more light. Regarding its design, the small dome housing makes it an excellent choice for mounting on horizontal surfaces like eaves. While vertical mounting is possible, it has limitations. The GWSECU camera's wide field of view makes it versatile for monitoring both close-range and larger areas. Its dome structure not only makes it less conspicuous but also less susceptible to vandalism. With careful installation, you can ensure a clean, wire-free appearance. While this camera has a pro-grade feel, it's important to note that it's not a plug-and-play consumer product. It's best suited for professional installation or for individuals willing to invest time in a proper setup. There's no reliance on cloud storage or subscription fees, and the camera boasts excellent picture quality and a fast streaming experience. ... show more

  • Good surveillance
Our son installed this on our auxiliary garage so that we can see the back side of our house. It’s nice to see when someone is pulling up in our driveway as we live a quarter-mile off of the main road and we are in our 70’s. He is very tech savvy, and said that it was somewhat easy to install.

  • Good features, 3MP is better at night than 4K
All the features I tried on the camera worked, even though the web page used to connect to it is somewhat dated and some features require Internet Explorer, which is no longer supported on modern computers. I was able to get it to work with Frigate, a free and open-source software project that provides a web interface for IP cameras and other video surveillance devices. The image quality is good both day and night, even though the camera is a few years old. I think the sensor at 3MP is better than 4K for the same sensor size. It seems to pick up more light. ... show more

  • Good Video Quality, Quirky Software
I recently had a chance to compare several GWSECU 3MP PoE cameras. This is a general review for the cameras that I tested. It contains additional details for this specific camera, but the cameras are very similar. All models come with a mounting template, mounting screws, a hex wrench, water-proof connection covers, and instructions. GWSECU makes several models of 3MP PoE U-series security cameras that have the same specs: 110-degree FOV, 2.8mm f-stop lens, and 82-ft IR night vision. The main difference between the models is the camera housing. The housings for the GWSECU cameras I tested fall into three basic categories: bullet, dome, and vandal-proof dome. The vandal-proof dome housing is more robustly built and has an acrylic dome over the camera. All the housing types have variations. Determination of what housing to buy is based on camera mounting location and your preference or need. The GW-D3U94CA1M model has a small dome housing. The preferred mounting would be a horizontal surface, such as an eave. It can be mounted vertically but would have limited flexibility. A dome housing is generally smaller and can be less intrusive. It works best when the view is limited to close to the camera. However, with the large FOV of these GWSECU cameras they can also monitor a larger area. A dome camera is a bit harder to aim but is also less susceptible to vandalism. The mounting holes are accessed by screwing off the base of the housing. The camera can be mounted without any wires exposed if the proper holes are drilled. All GWSECU’s 3MP cameras have similar video performance. Images are sharp and clear. Colors during the daylight are natural. The IR night vision is very effective and has a nice range. If you have motion detection lights, it can blow out people in the IR when the motion is detected, and the lights come on. There is a tradeoff for the lens’ wide FOV, small objects, for example a person’s head beyond about 10-feet is a very small part of the image. These cameras also have a microphone, and most NVR setups can utilize it. You can obtain the IP address of your camera several ways. One easy way is to download GWSECU’s Guard Tools utility from their website. Other programs that can find your cameras are iSpyConnect (open Source) or the trial version of Security Eye. The internal webserver page that is served up when you enter the camera’s IP address into your browser is similar for all GWSECU’s cameras. To get full functionality of the webpage you are asked to install a plug-in that is not supported by either chrome or edge. This shows that this company is not keeping its cameras up to date. The plug-in’s purpose was to provide a live view, helpful when aiming the camera. The webpages offer access to multiple settings. If you plan to use a static IP address, it can be set on this webpage. You can also create a new user and password, set the system date/time, and date format (default is ddMMYYYY), overlays, encoding, video size, and many other settings. A major inconvenience in the internal software of the cameras is that the date/time doesn’t recover after a power outage unless connected to an NTP server with port 123. NTP servers do not account for Daylight Saving Time, so half the year your time will be an hour off. If you are using an NVR, then you most likely don’t have to use the overlays provided by the camera in your recordings. In normal use setting the IP address, changing the user and password, updating the date/time and format, setting up NTP polling, and deciding what overlays you want is all you need to do. My assessment of this dome camera and all the other GWSECU’s 3MP cameras of this series is that it is a useful camera that can provide situational awareness and be helpful in identifying intruders if they are close to the camera. Features that I would like to have seen are an internal webserver that didn’t require a plug-in, a smaller FOV, local storage, and active deterrence. I would rate these cameras somewhere between 3 and 4 stars, trying to balance the nice video performance against all the little bits of quirkiness. ... show more

  • These GWSECU cameras have a great picture
This camera has a clear picture and an average field of view. Mounted under my shed eave it provides a sharp view of the swingset and sandbox my boys play. After changing the password, IP, NTP, and stream settings, I was able to easily add it to my BlueIris software. being PoE powered made for a simple installation of a single CAT6 wire. the included mounting hardware covered my installation needs. it was easy to mount, setup, and align. This camera has a very sharp crisp picture. I'm very impressed ... show more

  • Works well but difficult to setup
I had a heck of a time getting this to work with my Hikvision NVR but I did eventually get it going. Most of the changes had to happen on the NVR side but there was a few settings on the camera itself which was only difficult because the camera wasn't showing up on the IP that it was supposed to be on. The manual says on a non-dhcp network the camera will revert to a static IP and that IP is written in the manual, long story short that was not true and after some wire shark sleuthing I eventually found it and set a fixed static IP for it that worked with the NVR subnet. I have yet to install it in it's final location so I can't speak to it's performance much but early indications are that the image seems pretty decent on it and the mounting system seems robust and flexible if a little finicky. ... show more

  • Professional quality camera
This camera is typical of a pro-grade, commercial camera with the features you'd expect. It is much the same as a camera you'd get from a big-name brand beginning with 'H' and there's evidence it's the same product, but with a different brand name. It's ready to be added to an NVR, or server. This isn't a consumer product; best installed and set up by a professional or someone who can spend the time to get this done right. There is no cloud storage or subscription fees. Great picture, fast stream. ... show more
