  • Good and bad, but overall good
Good - 100% success once I learned to use it. The slits make it easy to plant cuttings in the plugs. Like all rockwool, lots of air circulation, doesn't seem to ever rot. Bad - the slits open too far and the cutting can come out. Also, the slits seem to cover only part of the outside of the stem of the cutting. So, only that part touching the rockwool could grow good roots. My solution -- use a small rubber band. Once the cutting is in the rockwool, pull the band around the plug. Gets it nice and tight and keeps everything in place. When you plant the cutting later, the elastic band just rots. Which is more than I can say for the rockwool. It never rots. Even once planted. The rockwool is forever. Also, rockwool makes you itch if you touch it without gloves. ... show more

  • Grodan Rockwool Plant Plugs, Macro, 50-Pack
I purchased a bag of these Rockwool Plant Plugs, Macro, 50-Pack from Grodan to have around for cuttings and seed starts. I hope to take a cutting of a Chinese elm from a neighbors yard, to start a bonsai project. These are the right size for this purpose and with a mesh net pot and some nutrient solution, it can be sustained until planted. I have tried my hand at aquaponics and need to use it more in my gardening. I have limited space and can take advantage of a few areas unused in the back yard. I like them for the purpose I see them being used for. ... show more

  • Macro plugs repackaged
A third of the plugs I received were crushed partially or split open. Obviously repackaged into generic bag. It appeared this product we're seconds and of were poor quality. These are good plugs normally and hold a lot of air unless they're crushed.

  • too small for standard aqua plant pots

  • Great for seeds or cuttings
I used these to start all my seeds. I used to use peat pots (Jiffy pots), but after learning about the over mining of peat for commercial sale that is damaging our natural forestation I switched and I'm glad I did. I also have a much higher success rate of germination using these compared to peat pots. They retain water longer, are pH neutral, sterile, and are organic. I also soak mine in warm water and gently squeeze them to loosen them up and break them in, rinse then soak again. If you soak them in tap water for best results let the tap water sit out for a 12-24 hours before soaking to let the chlorine and chemicals evaporate off. ... show more

  • Plugs work great for cuttings
Plugs work great for cuttings. I use 2" mesh pots to hold them together. The reason I gave them a 4 is because the material is abrasive and you have to wear gloves to handle it. I would remove them before transplanting. The instructions on the bag say to use hormone rooting powder. I agree with this. ... show more
