  • Great value for a great saw.
Excellent saw! It was shipped via UPS LTL Freight. Instead of arranging delivery to my shop and then having to figure a way to remove this 500 pound saw from the truck, or paying extra for a truck with a lift gate, I opted to go to the terminal to pick it up myself. It arrived at the terminal ready for pickup 2 days before the estimated delivery date. It was ordered on Thursday and was ready for pickup on Monday. I am in Alabama and it shipped from Springfield, MO, so your experience may vary. Everything was well packaged and nothing was damaged, not even a scuff or scratch. Check youtube for some videos Grizzly put out covering the different saws and their features and it will help decide which model fits you best. The main saw for all the 1023 are the same it is just the extension wing and fence that are different, or a bigger motor. There are also some posts of people with Grizzly saws and their experiences, and just about of them are positive. Cleanup of the rust prevention that is applied to tools after manufacturing took about an hour. WD-40 and a plastic scraper made it painless. To assemble, all that was needed was to install the extension wings, fence system, and miscellaneous brackets. No shimming was needed for the extension wings, it was near perfectly flat out of the box. The miter slots had some buildup in them that made them different thickness front to back. It was about 0.010" tighter near the fence than the far side, so the miter gauge started out snug and ended up loose. A few minutes with a course and a few with a fine file and it was much better. Once cleaned out, the blade and miter slot were within .002" of each other straight away, so I left it without adjustment. The 90 degree stop blade stop was within 0.15 degrees of 90 from the table. The Shop Fox fence installation was nearly painless. The top of the back rail where the fence slides, was no where near smooth. It was painted and it appears that the runoff drips all accumulated on the one surface that needs to be relatively flat an smooth. A few more minutes with the files quickly took off the paint and smoothed it right out so the fence now slides nicely. The fence needed some adjustment to make it parallel with the blade, but I fully expected that because of the small about of slop around the bolt in the holes. That was very easy to do with an allen wrench. Overall, the setup wasn't too bad. It took about an hour of cleaning all the parts for assembly, about 30 minutes for assembly, and then another hour filing and adjusting to get thing ready to go. So far I have only made a crosscut sled for it, so I don't have any long term experience, but it ripped the 2x4s as fast as I wanted with zero signs of struggle. It is smooth running and a huge improvement over the inexpensive contractor saw I had been using. ... show more

  • Value 5 star expect hiccups.
I bought this after debating over the newer chineese model. This one is made in Taiwan. When ordering something from woodstock (grizzly or shopfox) expect problems. I have a lot of their tools and this is just part of the process. I was missing parts on the fence and it wasn't locking down right and the left extension was warped (even the replacement they sent me was warped but usable) Grizzly will make things right for you as long as you report the problems right away. I have their 8" jointer and the fence isn't true and I tried to get it replaced after 1 year and they wouldn't help me. This was my first cabinet saw and I won't be going back to a contractor saw again. This machine is very solid runs smooth and has decent power. I kind of wish I would have went with the 5HP after stalling this one out twice and having it overheat on me. I was ripping poplar as fast as I could push it through while my buddy was pulling on the other side....it can only handle that for so long before it trips the overload and you have to wait for it to cool. **Be very careful it may turn on without warning. When using it normally 3hp is plenty. It is very easy to raise and tilt the blade, I use an electronic angle finder to get my angles but have noticed the positive stops are pretty accurate once you get them right. The saw runs VERY smooth. The fence is OK, but nothing great. I really liked the shopfox fence that is on bearings this one uses plastic guides. I do regret not getting the router table extension model. I did build a base out of steel and poly roller wheels from HD. I am NOT a fan of the generic mobile bases shopfox sells...they don't roll good and the wheels don't like to pivot. I'm sure a wood base would be fine too. It is kind of short so it was nice to build it 5" higher. The cabinet does fill up with sawdust so make sure you keep it clean to prevent rust and keeps the controls clean. I think it deserves 3 start out of the box, but after setting it up -warranty problems its a great value and thus worthy of 5 star. *update 2 years- still working like day 1. I still get a happy feeling of joy when I use it. ... show more

  • Excellent Machine
Let me preface this review by saying that I have been making furniture for well over 10 years. Initially upon receipt of machine there was two screws broken inside the fence; this held the plastic pieces onto the fence body. Contacted Grizzly immediately, they were really professional and sent the parts out quickly. Well they sent the parts and the result was I got a front rail off another piece of equipment. Finally I have all the pieces and have been using this machine for roughly three months now. PROS: The trunion on this is a beast Gas shocks aide in raising/lowering the blade. Far superior than any other machine I have seen. I have used delta and a variety of others; none of them had the ease and speed in this operation. Most saws are gear driven(information for those who do not know) Really powerful 3hp motor, have ran some 4/4 maple and 8/4 oak; in both operations the saw never bogged down. Solid construction all the way around from the top to the bottom, and you can see this was well thought out and executed. Price point is excellent especially with the quality provided CONS: A shroud encompasses the lower portion of the blade for dust collection purposes. This was a good idea but the problem comes with cut offs fall below. It took about two times of pieces getting caught in the 2" hose at the bottom of the shroud that I took it off. The throat plate for single blade option does not with the 45 degree option. Instead I have to us the dado insert when I have to cut 45's. What happenes is the blade touches the single blade plate. Not a huge deal because I make my own plates; but I have never seen this I other saws. Over all it is a good investments. Not really recommended for hobbiest who may use a saw a dozen or so times a year. This is a bit over kill if you are in this type of situation. However, I use mine almost daily and this has held up very well. ... show more
