Solidly built, and a thoughtful design for mounting. The charger component is solid and reliable, and it "feels" good--like it was built with high-quality components and cabling. The only complaint I have is that it's hard to get connected to wifi, and once connected, it tends to fall off and doesn't reconnect itself. I routinely go to look at our charging history in the (very nice) app, and find it has been offline for a week or more... so I reconnect it, and it works fine for a couple weeks, then falls off again. ... show more

It was easy install but not as easy to get set up the WiFi. I followed the instructions but could not attach to the WiFi. 3 calls to their help team and was told for 3 days someone would call me back with the solution. 3rd day I called the help line once again and was told to open the box move a switch reboot set it back to the original position. Reboot and it connected perfectly. Have no idea how they could expect you to set up the unit yourself. 3 minutes to properly set it up. Now I love the charger. ... show more

    • Overreliance on connectivity for smart features; Wi-Fi drops frequently for no reason

To use the scheduling feature, you need active Wi-Fi connection - not just when you setup/program but all the time or the charger could start charging at your most expensive electric rate. And Wi-Fi drops out frequently - so no this is a very real problem. Why does this charger stop following the configured schedule and just charge all the time because it does not have an active Wi-Fi connection??? Electronics from the 1980s were able to (a) keep time and (b) follow a programmed schedule without needing constant external communications. Why is this charger different? This is massive level stupid - like the head of product/engineering should get fired stupid. We are close to have artificial general intelligence and Grizzl-E cannot even design a product with the resiliency of a 1987 VCR??? We are in Southern California Edison territory with time of use electric billing, so the cost for peak electricity vs. non-peak can be 2-3x more expensive. If I have charger plugged in to car and WiFi drops out, I could easily spend extra $5-10 on electricity each time that happens. The Wi-Fi connection is unreliable at best. The garage door opener and washer/dryer are also in garage and do not seem to have the same issue with losing connection. I tried adding guest network just for charger that was only 2.4Ghz per instructions but that did not work any better (actually worse). The base charging functionality seems fine, but it not very useful if I have to remember to only plug charger into car after 9pm. ... show more

    • Two major flaws to get past

Overall, this is a quality EVSE. The app is a bit limited, but it will work just fine for most users. There are two significant issues that could impact many users, and they both relate to the WiFi performance of this “smart” charger. When the operating environment involves a mesh network, the device will see each access point as a different network, even though they have the same SSID. The device doesn’t know the difference between the access points, so it will pick one to connect to even if it’s the furthest one from the charger. At this point it may go offline if the signal is not strong enough to establish the necessary handshakes. This leads to the second issue with the device in that the WiFi antenna is on a daughter board that is wholly contained within the aluminum housing. While that’s great for protecting the electronics, it significantly attenuates the signal level the antenna receives. Many users are unable to reconfigure the access point locations to get one closer to the charger. The United Chargers customer service staff was very responsive, although they were not very forthcoming in the beginning. They eventually admitted to this being a known issue and offered to send a network repeater, at no cost, to provide a different SSID network and extend the WiFi signal. This may have alleviated the problem, but the each user will need to determine if this is an acceptable solution in their case. One shouldn’t have to go to such lengths to get this working. United Chargers needs to 1) update the Grizzl-e firmware that manages the WiFi radio so it handles mesh networks properly and 2) incorporate an external antenna that extends outside the housing. They know it, but it just hasn’t reached the point where they’re ready to implement it. ... show more
