  • Save money - buy the non-smart version
The charger itself is UL listed and well-constructed. I had mine installed by a professional electrician, who installed a 50-amp line to handle the 40-amp top power of the charger. It works well and quickly charges my 2023 Kia EV6. The ChargeLab app setup is awkward - it doesn't support the 5GHz WiFi; you must temporarily connect to a 2.4GHz WiFi band to set it up. I was able to set it up without incident, but the scheduled charging simply does not work. ChargeLab claims that they can monitor the WiFi signal received by the charger and it's too weak. I used a signal meter, held in front of the charger, and it was significantly stronger than they said. I also noticed that the Charger seems set for the wrong time zone. The app does not give the user the ability to correct that; only ChargeLab seems to be able to do that. All in all, I'd say the charger is excellent and the app is not ready for commercial use. I will note that tech support does respond quickly (but as of yet they still insist it's a weak signal). I would suggest getting the non-smart version of this charger and use your car's scheduling software. It would have saved me money and a lot of time. Note that the Kia scheduling software is awkwardly designed - the user must input the departure time, and it's unclear how the Kia software uses the departure time to decide when to start charging. Thus, I'd really like ChargeLab to resolve their issues. ... show more

  • "Smart" features not worth the extra cost
We bought this to replace an EVSE from another manufacturer that had WIFI app control over charge current, scheduling, charge stop conditions, etc. We were quite disappointed by the lack of features that come with the "smart" model of the Grizzl-E EVSE. Grizzl-E does not have it's own app, but recommends using the app provided by ChargeLab, which is more suited for finding public chargers. The app has only the most basic ability to set a charge schedule by start and end time. That's it. It does not show the charge rate, or how much time has elapsed since the vehicle started charging, or much useful information at all. While the app indicates how much charge has been delivered during a charge session, we found the information to be erroneous as well, since it was quite off from what we can calculate by multiplying the charge rate (current x voltage) with the number of hours that the vehicle has been charging. Since the ability to set a charge schedule is found in the settings of most EVs nowadays, there was simply nothing about the "smart" model of the Grizzl-E to justify the price premium over the "Classic" model. The build quality of the Grizzl-E is very good though. It comes in an extra sturdy metal casing (identical to the case of the previous EVSE we had) and seems very durable and weatherproof. The J1772 cable is *extremely* durable and thick, and is actually too durable if your EVSE is inside a garage and not exposed to rough elements. The thickness of the cable makes it rather inflexible and heavy, making it harder to coil up each time. Grizzl-E designed it for Canadian winters, it seems. My recommendation would be to save your money and skip the "Smart" model and go with the Classic if available. The "Classic" model is identical hardware, just without the WIFI module. The Grizzl-E hardware is excellent, and certainly much higher quality and reliability than the other no-name, non-UL listed EVSEs that you can find. ... show more

  • Great Level 2 Charger - but check your Wi-Fi connection before buying
This is a great charger and does what is advertised in terms of how it mounts, the length of cable, and the charging speed it can achieve on a 50 Amp circuit (NEMA 14-50). Honestly I recommend it an instant, with one caveat... ...if your home wireless internet signal strength is not sufficiently strong at the mounting location, then the "Smart" features are not usable. Grizzl-E says your signal strength at the mounting location should be at least 67 dBm as measured by a signal testing app in order for the smart features to work through the Charge Lab app. I didn't bother with this test ahead of time because my smart phone always has perfectly fine internet function in that area. It didn't dawn on me that it wouldn't be good enough. Because of this, I couldn't try out the smart features. I'm sure they're great! But I couldn't check for myself. I will likely be returning this product in part (but not just) because of my signal strength issue - NOT because of the product's design otherwise. I'm instead going to seek out a Level 2 Charger that is (1) designed to be more portable, (2) compatible with Level 1 charging, and (3) capable of having the output current and charge time delay set through the unit itself instead of a smart phone app. I have found a product that costs about as much as this does, but will also allow the extra functionalities of Level 1 charging when needed, while also being more portable. Now that I've actually held and tried to use one of these Level 2 charging cables, I find that I care more about those design implements than I do the smart features. ... show more

  • No Pizzazz on the App, but Works Great!
I was on the fence about buying this EV charger. Don’t get me wrong, because it seems like everyone has said the charger works great, but the WiFi version doesn’t work all that well and it didn’t warrant the nearly $100 price difference. I read the reviews after buying the WiFi version and I thought, “Gonna have to return this sucker as soon as it’s delivered. “. But then I thought, “Eh, well I got it. Might as well try it before I send it back. Who knows, maybe it’ll work for me.” Good thing I got a change of heart. I used the WiFiSweetSpot App to test signal strength. It seemed adequate so I went for the install. I already felt a little frustration because, like many have said, damn thing runs on 2.5Ghz and then it looked like the charger wasn’t getting picked up by the network, and to make matters worse, the cars own scheduling software had to be disabled. Well…after a few hiccups installing the App, I know how to read the rudimentary flashing colors the Grizzl-E emits and now I’m a happy camper. The App allows me to schedule the time when the unit is allowed to provide a charge, because without it, who knows what EV driving neighbor may be tempted to do while I’m at work. ... show more
