I don't usually write reviews like this but this water bottle literally saved my life. This past summer, I got stuck in the Ecuadorian jungle during violent protests and civil unrest. I was stuck for 25+ hours, had to sleep on the side of the road in our car. I luckily had this water bottle with me and it provided clean drinking water for myself and the 4 other people. I would fill it up using a roadside hose, filter the water through it, then pour the clean water into other people's water bottles. None of us got sick and we were all able to maintain hydration. As others have noted, it does require a flat surface and strength to push the filter through, but the average active person will be okay doing so. ... show more

    • Bought this for a portable water filtration solution
I am not a through hiker and will not normally use this for getting water from a stream unless I absolutely needed to. I bought this for travel mainly and for using to filter water before filling up other bottles/bladders. A few notes similar to what a lot of other people have noted. First, this is a heavy unit without water in it. With water, the weight to water held ratio is pretty high. It weighs a good amount because it is very sturdy. The actual filtering the water takes a lot force to do so reasonably quick. The flow rate is not bad for me, but my wife tried to filter water and it was a chore for her. I wanted to carry this as back up for the just in case scenario, but due to its weight, I am carrying a Life Straw instead for the backup case. Second, the bottle does have an unnatural smell to it. I have cleaned it a few times and it still smells a bit. Just be aware of that if that bothers you. Third, mind the fill line before you press. The blue bottle I have makes it hard to see the line, but I have found that I need to keep the water slightly below the line. The consequence is water shooting out of it and spraying all over the place. Fourth, keep the cap off before you press. Seems like common sense and I don't know if it is in the directions or not (I seemed to have lost them right after I got the bottle). However, you need the air to push out so you can filter. Fifth, the water filtering is pretty good overall. This is purely subjective, but pit against my Berkey, the water tastes pretty good. I used this for a long weekend two weeks ago where the cabin's water had a sulfur taste to it and this filter got it out. Overall, a well made, but very expensive unit. I will likely take this travelling with me, but it is pretty heavy and if you are a serious hiker, there could be lighter and just as effective options out there such as the squeeze bags etc. ... show more

Yes it’s expensive but it’s worth it. Not having to worry about water quality when you travel is the best thing. Easy to use and not as heavy as other reviews have said.

Traveled with this in Indonesia and was very glad to have it. I always want more water than anyone will serve me, and with this filter, I could even drink tap water or airline water. Great to have the comfort of knowing all germs and chemicals are removed anytime I want a drink. Money saved by not buying bottles water paid for this bottle in one trip. And you drink normally- you don’t hav3 to suck th3 water through a filtering straw. My only wish is that there was a narrower version that would fit in the water bottle pockets of my backpack ... show more

Works grest, used it a lot while camping in November an never had an issue with it an wster tasted great, although should use a pantyhose over outer cup for extra filter will help keep filter from filling up quickly but filters are fairly inexpensive for replacement.
