  • Best tablet, 2in1, Chromebook, Ultrabook whatever... Best of the portables!
Style: Pixel Slate Configuration: Core m3, 8 GB
I'm very glad I didn't listen to tech reviewers. None of the complaints exists. It's the best by a long way. iPad is nothing. I was concern about weight and size for tablet use but holding it on hand is comfortable. It has two USB Type-C ports. So I can charge it from both sides of the tablet. You can plug lots of USB device and it will work. External storage, printer, modem, input devices... and external display. It won't just reflect the screen like iPad. You can use it as a separate monitor and it will match the resolution, even 4K. I was using Ubuntu before. Yes, I ditched my laptop as a web developer thanks to Chrome OS's Linux app support. Having both Linux and Android apps on the same OS is incredible. Even without GPU support (for now) Linux apps works fine. I've Gimp for professional photo editing, Inkscape for illustration and Sublime Text for coding. When GPU support arrives for Linux apps, it will probably possible to edit videos, play Steam games. Android apps also work fine. Many games run smooth. But of course, since that big screen is new for the Android world, many apps look bad on fullscreen. I experienced app crashes a few times, a few apps didn't launch at all but these are the minority. I hope app developers give more importance on big screens and x86 processors. I also impressed Google Assistant on this device. It's so fast that sometimes I find it easier to launch apps, websites with the Assistant especially if I don't have the keyboard attached. I also find very useful to find documents in Drive. But unfortunately, it opens it on Chrome instead of the Files app so, I can't open the file with a different app by this way. I also like the performance of Chrome OS. It is so fast, even with the Android and Linux apps are working. Apps launch instantly, multitasking is great. I never shut down my device but it boots up in 5 seconds. Some UI animations are not 60 fps :) but this never affects the interaction time. Usability is fast. I hope animations will be smoother with updates but not a big deal for me, it's not a game. The settings of Chrome OS over-simplified. You can't customise things much. There isn't an option to set a screen off timer. However, some missing settings can be changed with extensions and Chrome flags. ... show more

  • Top of the line Chromebook with tablet form factor
Style: Pixel Slate Configuration: Core i5, 8 GB
I will first say that I began looking at chromebooks as a tablet replacement and not as a standard laptop replacement. And to this end i wanted to keep the tablet form factor. I have only used Samsung flagship tablets, and wanted the greater functionality and power they can give over entry level tablets. Recently Samsung and Apple are really the only two putting effort into the tablet market, and one of their main focuses is on adding in laptop type functionality. The way i saw i was if that is what their focus and justification of price i would look at chromebooks as they are a laptop setup, but can still run Android apps. There aren't really many on the market. The HP Chromebook x2 is the only other option i could find/considered. It would be a little cheaper and has the keyboard included in the price. Overall the Pixel Slate has better hardware. The Pixel Slate was not well accepted when it came out and there were a lot complaints thrown against it. Most of what I read complaint wise was software related. I have not seen any of those complaints myself thru my use which I believe comes down to two points. First is time, software is improved continuously over time, and so since I didn't buy it when it first came out, software issues have likely been fixed. Second I never considered the underpowered processor models, and Google has even discontinued the lowest two. I picked the slate with the i5 processor, primarily due to internal storage as the slate doesn't have expandable storage. The only real thing i have against the Pixel slate is price. I say it is a great product and fits my needs very well. It just isn't personally worth the retail sale price. I bought it when it was on sale. I bought it when it was $250 off, and saved more from the deal i got by signing up for and using the Amazon Prime credit card. Additionally i found it best to purchase from Amazon because of the available protection plans. Best Buy has no protection plan offered for the Pixel slate. Google has one you can buy from them but is only 2 years and is a hair more expensive than what i got with my purchase on amazon. My protection plan covers me for 4 years. Overall, i have no buyers remorse for my purchase, at the price point I paid. The android Apps work really well. You can't at this time side load apk's, but there is only a couple of apps for me that would need that use. It is something that rumors say could come at some point. The greater laptop function/power over standard tablet is great. I have begun working with the Linux apps as well and see greater capabilities from it as well. I am excited to see all the new software features Chrome OS will bring. ... show more
