  • INVALUABLE accessory!
I am relatively new to metal detecting (and I hardly ever review products), but after several days of digging holes in heavy, often filled with rocks and roots, soil in Ohio and trying to find whatever the heck my metal detector (Garrett Ace 350) had detected, I was quickly losing patience. My metal detector has a pinpoint feature like many modern detectors, but even so, it can be tricky to locate an item. Just because it is displaying as a dime or quarter 4 inches down, does not mean it can't be a larger hunk of metal 8 inches down. Pretty soon I have a huge, deep crater but still not whatever the detector had found. This would leave me wondering if I was somehow off on using the detector's pinpoint feature and the object was a little off to the side, etc., etc. You get the picture. Anyways, after several days of this (either not finding an item or taking a while to find the item) I was sold on the idea of a stand-alone handheld pinpointer. After some research, I decided upon the Garrett Pro-Pointer because it a.) looked robust, b.) was not connected to the detector itself like an inline pinpointer (I know some like those, but I just wanted something like a wand that wasnt connected with wires to anything), and c.) was water resistant. Well, I used this (the Garrett Pro-pointer) all day two days ago and for about an hour last night at dusk (low light) (yes, the little LED light was useful (!) since I hadn't brought a flashlight) and I have to say that it really spoils you. The battery gave out (it was the heavy duty (not alkaline) 9 volt that came with the unit) near the end of the marathon detecting session two days ago (the first day I used it) and I would have called it a day had I not thought to bring a spare 9 volt. (BTW, mentioned that it was the cheap battery that comes with the unit that gave out after about 7 hours because it is supposed to last longer than that -- I imagine it will on the new alkaline battery I put in) (Even if it doesn't, I still love it!). Anyway, like I was saying, I would have called it a day without a functioning Pro-pointer. It makes finding the objects VERY much easier, which equates to having more fun and finding more things. The ONLY terrain on which I would consider detecting without the Pro-pointer (but since I own one now, I wouldn't) would be a sandy beach if I had a perforated scoop tool. So, it the only place you go detecting is a nice sandy beach (I am jealous), then you could maybe get by with a scoop. That said, considering how affordable the Pro-pointer is I would still recommend investing in it. As far as operation of the unit goes, it is just like in the video on the Garrett website. You can scan around with the 360 degree field around the length of the pointer then use the tip to zone in on the object. The beeping gets faster and faster until you are touching or almost touching the object, at which point the beeping changes to a continuous tone. Ease of use is very natural. I found things in AT LEAST, I would estimate, a fourth or fifth of the time it would have taken me without the Pro-pointer (frankly, probably even less than that). Plus, if you don't find it right away, you know you are digging in the right direction when you do need to dig a little more than originally intended, which is comforting to know. Found lots of coins and a 1947 dime (silver!) which is in great condition and probably would have stood a greater chance of being scratched had I not known exactly where it was thanks to the pointer. Also, it is a solidly built and well-sealed unit that can stand up to getting dirty and wet without any problems (so far, at least). Well, I hardly ever review things, and if I do, it means I feel very strongly about them. I can't say enough good things about the Garrett Pro-pointer. I researched others and this seems like the best for my needs in any price range and so far I absolutely love it! ... show more

  • Works great. Good sensitivity metal detecting Garrett Pro Pointer
I bought a Fisher 75 detector for meteorite, coin and relic finding. I was also told to buy a quality pin pointer for finding in the hole dug the objects the Fisher 75 detects. Through numerous reviews on Amazon I selected the Garrett Pro Pointer. Just look at all the reviews, almost all 5 stars. I have never had a pin pointer so I can't compare the Garrett to another. I did do 4 tests with the Garrett Pointer. I dough a hole and put in a quarter and put an inche of dirt over it. Sticking the pointer in it easily detected the slightly buried quarter. I tried it with a half inch iron tester meteorite in the hole with an inch of dirt on it. Again I was easily able to hear the beeps of the pointer. I tried it with the quarter and then the small meteorite on the side of the hole. Again easily able to hear the beeps. The unit is easy to operate. Takes a single transistor battery. A white LED comes on to let you know its on. It gives 2 quick beeps letting the user know its ready to use. AS you get closer to the metallic object the rate of pulsating audio increases. As you go away the rate of pulsating audio decreases. There is a 3.75 in scraping blade on the side of the unit to sift through the dirt. The white LED will remain on while pointer on and can be used as a flashlight. INMO not very bright. A nice belt holster for the pointer is supplied. Again I never had a pin pointer to compare the Garrett Pro Pointer to but it seems everyone loves this pointer. Everyone I talked to says using a good pin pointer is almost a necessity in conjunction with a good metal detector. The user book says it can also be used as a wall stud finder too. Also you can put part of the pointer in mud or water almost up to the on/off power button. This allows the user to us the pointer in puddles. The unit appears very solidly built and INMO is a quality instrument that should last a long time. Highly recommend the Garrett Pro Pointer. 5 stars ... show more

  • Works great
Kids loved helping with this pointer. Very durable and picked up 3 coins our first dig. Very pricey but solid product.

  • How did I ever live without this ?
Ok nothing is perfect so I will list the downfalls first. Push button switch stays on so if you forget to turn it off, batteries die. No volumn control so if using for metal detecting, put a piece of Black electrical tape over speaker, otherwise it blast and you draw too much attention to yourself. Now the good. I had an El-Cheapo pinpointer previous to this and it was better than nothing at all but barely. It got got a coin at 1/4" away. I did a side by side test and the Garrett can pick up the same coin 2" away. Larger items at much farther. My success rate has skyrocketed since my time searching for the coin etc, has been cut down by more than half. Sometimes before I was digging for 10 minutes trying to find an elusive target. 50% of the time with the Garrett, I barely have to dig. Simply place and point at area before digging and often the object is just under the soil. If not, dig your plug and this helper zooms right in on the hiding item. Will never hunt without it from this point on. Why end the day with a pouch full of trash and 50 cents at the end of the days hunt when the Pro-Pointer basically does the work for you. It is not cheap but will pay for itself in time saved. Unit beeps faster closer it gets to object. Also vibrates so if you have your headphones on, you can feel it as well. Comes with a belt holder, a flashlight to see into a deep hole and also what they call a scraping blade. Bascially a flat edge along one side to scrap the side wall of the hole. Made of water proof plastic. Takes 1 9v battery. Should last awhile since you are only using it one you have detected an item with your detector. ... show more
