  • Works fairly well.
I bought this based off Serious Eat's mortar and pestle review. I've used a couple of mortar and pestles for spice grinding before, all of which didn't actually grind spices too well. One of them had a mortar rim too high so your hand would always bang against it while using the pestle. Others just didn't grind spices so much as pushed them around. I made my usual attempt at grinding some cumin and coriander. In other mortar and pestles, the spices would break, but that's it--they wouldn't grind to a powder or anything. On this one, I actually got a nice powder. It took a decent amount of time but a lot less than I'd spent on my other ones, and it wasn't too uncomfortable to use. The rough interior really seemed to help. I haven't tried grinding other things, like pesto. It's not perfect, though. The base is slightly uneven and it liked to slide around my countertop. A damp towel or something on the bottom solves this problem but it's something to be aware of, and it is rather heavy. The interior is a light marble and it was stained yellow from the turmeric I added, which didn't wash away easily. I don't mind that, personally, but it's another thing to take note of. ... show more

  • It is easy to clean.
I like the heaviness of it. I wasn't real sure about the color as I thought it would have been more green than it is. It looks more black until you get it in the bright light. I have already used it to crush herbs and I found it easy to use and to clean. I have lava mortar and pestle, but it is hard to get cleaned. I like this one better. ... show more

  • Easy to use and attractive
I like how easy it crushes whatever I want to pulverize. I like the color too.

  • High quality
Well made and just the right size for small patches. I have a dedicated whirley bird coffee grinder for larger amounts, but it's a hassle to clean. This is perfect for a teaspoon or two. I was concerned it might be porous enough to absorb odors but now I don't think it will. Very happy.

  • Best present ever
I bought this item for a gift for my daughter, she loves crushing the seasonings for me. Deep enough not to spill anything and she doesn't mind cleaning it when done. Thanks Amazon

  • Very cute!!
Nice ams heavy, super cute and the perfect size for my herbal witchcraft, this is an awesome gift for your witchy friends, the obly thing to note is that this should be used for dry grinding as the grooves could prove difficult to clean this shouldn't get wet at all clean with dry cloth and lightly mist with effective sterilizer ... show more

  • Great mortar and pestle for general spice and herb use.
Great mortar and pestle, if i had the choice i'd buy it again, it's a little bigger then i originally thought it would be and havier but thats not a bad thing, its not huge its definitly on the smaller side i mainly got it for making meat rubs for the smoker and crushing a few herbs for medicinal uses. it works fine for that, if you wanted to make entire dishes with it your definitly going to want a bigger one, that or use a seperate bowl to put crushed spices and herbs into to mix it as you go. it's absoloutly perfect for what i need it for however and im completly satisfied the only distasteful thing i can say about it which isnt a big deal is it comes a bit whiter then in the picture, however that could be remedied with a glaze or wax to bring out the green more if you so desire. it doesent ghost anything and ive had soaps and peppers and vinegar and all sorts of nasty things in it that would suck soak right into normal stoneware type items i'd have. ... show more

  • Decent quality pestle for a very reasonable price.
This is a solid marble pestle. As noted in some of the other reviews, there are some minor rings at the bottom of the pestle where the bit bore the marble out. This doesn't seem to have an impact on the ability to grind my herbs. The item arrived timely and undamaged. The price is very reasonable, especially when we found a slightly larger similar item at a big box store going for $70.00. ... show more
