    • Quite ingenious concept and design, clever functionality

I was really looking forward to giving this Zebra Blackout roller blind the highest rating. In my opinion, the concept seems rather unique, ingenious, and even brave. THE CONCEPT: The idea is two have two striped blinds within a single blind. The stripes alternate with one stripe being opaque, and the next one being transparent. As you pull on the blind, the two striped blinds cleverly go into and out of alignment. When an opaque stripe lines up with a transparent stripe, the opaque stripe will block out the light coming through the transparent stripe; and you will have a blackout effect. The amount of light coming inside will always depend upon how the two striped blinds are aligned; except that because the blind is evenly striped to begin with, the maximum light let in will always be at 50 percent, when the two transparent stripes align with each other. At that point, each little tug on the blind will incrementally place the two stripes out of alignment, and into closer alignment with an opaque stripe, thus decreasing the light able to enter through the blinds. The result is a classic linear light polarization effect, often used in making sunglasses. THE PRODUCT: By all appearances, the zebra blind appears to be very well made. It is very sturdy. Each aspect of its rather complex design seems well crafted and free from defects. It even comes with warnings so you don't inadvertently damage the blind. And the installation manual is even coherent and helpful. THE INSTALLATION: I opted for the 'ceiling' installation as opposed to the wall installation. Actually, I was installing into the underside of the top of my window frame. I installed the three clips that are designed to hold the blind, easy-peasy. Then came time to lock the body/housing of the blind into the clips. That was hard. It took some time and perseverance, but I finally got the housing locked in. The FUNCTION: I need to note that my blind was a tight fit, with zero room on either side for the housing. Still, it fit. So, how did it function? When pulling the blind down, it was easy and everything worked as designed. However, when I wanted the blind to go up, it only wanted to go up half way, then stop. After attempting to slowly tease the blind all the way up, I finally decided to check the user's manual. There is apparently a tension screw on the side. The manual instructs you to turn the screw counterclockwise to increase the tension which will make the shade go up more easily. I presume this simple fix is going to work just fine, but as it was so difficult putting up the shade, I'm not in a big hurry to pull it down just yet to access the tension screw. I'll do it later, not now. I was pleasantly surprised that the manual was so comprehensive and addressed my problem with a clear and simple fix. So, not only is this roller shade a clever and superbly designed product, but it also has a coherent user's manual that is actually helpful. Five Stars!! ... show more

As someone who values both aesthetics and functionality, I recently upgraded my office window with these blinds. These shades mean business when it comes to blocking light. With an impressive 80% blackout capability, they turn daytime into twilight and nighttime into cozy darkness. I like the ability to adjust how much sun light comes in. The installation process was straightforward. The included accessory kit and manual made it hassle-free. And let’s be honest, nobody wants complicated blinds that require an engineering degree to set up! I went with the Grey color as it matches my decor nicely. My package did not come with the anchor screws which was not a deal buster, didn't need them anyways. I do wish that it came with a shade puller instead of it having to be purchased separately. If you are someone that is constantly putting the shades all the way up, you will want that additionally. I don't open them all the way up but if I did it would drive me insane having to get a step-ladder every time. ... show more

I put this shade up in my office and absolutely LOVE It! It's beautiful and stylish and my favorite feature is that it allows you to easily control the amount of light and privacy available at any time with just a simple pull or lift on the bottom. As you pull up or down, the darkening panels will smoothly glide over and either expand or contract depending on what you want. It's also extremely simple to install. I'm not a particularly skilled person when it comes to DIY projects, but was able to put this together in a fairly short time and without difficulty. It comes with all the hardware, and the instructions are easy to follow. The price is also a great value compared to similar selections available. Just be aware that this shade is described as room "darkening," and is not a blackout shade. It does a great job of darkening the room, but you will see light seeping through during the daytime. Overall, I highly recommend this product and intend on purchasing more for other rooms asap. ... show more

    • Quality and great looking on all levels - but a steep price

To be honest, I was a bit thrown off when I went to install these. I saw "cordless" in the name and, apparently not thinking, I assumed that meant these were battery powered blinds. But, nonetheless, I went ahead and put them in our kitchen and they really are quite sharp looking. The tuning for pulling them up and down is a bit wonky, in my opinion, as I couldn't quite get them to draw back up very easily, even after tuning them tighter and tighter until I felt it wouldn't go any farther. So, overall, they look great and work "ok". The major draw back is, at this price, you may as well be looking at some "smart" or at least powered blinds. ... show more
