Good quality construction but very limited usage. I had to bore additional holes in the product in order to be able to use it on any piece bigger than a rolling pin. Should have stated product not suitable for variable sized projects. If they would have put in slots rather than one designated hole it would have given the varability most people want. This product came pretty much assembled except for the need to mount onto your lathe's ways. They provide a threaded plate and a bolt to tighten it underneath the ways. The bolt is a metric M10.125 requiring 17mm crescent wrench, not included. The upper and lower outriggers with the bearings have stronger M12.175 bolts to anchor the flat bar to the vertical support, requiring an M19 crescent wrench, also not included. An M10.125 captures the bearing(s). All the flat metal is a pretty hefty at 10mm to 15mm depending on the position in the steady rest. This is one hulk of a steady rest; but that's where it ends...it is strong! Based on the photos of this steady rest I was a little concerned on the capacity. My concern was justified. The maximum bowl blank, you can turn is a about 4 1/2" in diameter, rough, that's a tiny bowl. The lower outrigger's 1 3/8" bearings are actually fixed at 1 1/2" apart on center, a mere 1/8" from each other. The center between them is fixed at 2 1/4" away from the edge of the vertical support bar. How you adjust to the diameter of the turning is by moving the whole steady rest on the ways in and out. At the highest location, the upper outrigger bearing's lower edge is 10" from the top of the ways. This means the largest lathe this can be used on is 20" of swing, surely sufficient. Refer to the diagram for more clarity. This, at best, is a spindle-turning steady rest, although they'd be big spindles, like a table center post at the extreme or bannisters at the other extreme.. I'd like to give it props for being the strongest of steady rests for spindle turning (or small bowls for that matter), but what holds the turning in place are actual metal bearings. They turn well but you cannot apply any pressure unless you want to sand out markings. No rubber tires... As for the adjustability, within it's ranges, it is quite variable but what a juggling act to get it set when you have to wield the wrenches. Fortunately, the plates that hold the bearings are threaded. When you have it set, the nut on the backside locks it down so the outrigger can't loosen while you are turning. Same goes for bolting down the assembly to the ways. The base plate is threaded too. Once bolted, that's it, the steady rest is fixed in place, to slide it up the spindle, you need to pull out a wrench. What would be better is knobs or swivel arms (like on some clamps). The vertical adjustability for accommodating the swing of your particular lathe is achieved by moving the upper and lower outriggers, independently, to make contact with the turning. Once set, be careful as you tighten the outrigger's bolt as to not over pressure the bearing onto your turning. If all I was doing was spindles, this would be a legitimate steady rest. In my opinion, the typical steady rest, with the hoop surrounding the turning, is a nuisance in spindle turning. This steady rest is better for being out of the way. Three stars only because there is some serious metal in the thing. But the hard bearing wheels, the lack of a convenient locking mechanisms, the lack of clarity about it's capacity and the limited range of use are all detractions. ... show more

    • Heavy duty, but with limited applications for a Lathe
This rest is rock solid, however I did have to jerry-rig a mounting to my lathe because the bottom bracket is only 2 1/2" long. Once that was done, I could us this to hold stock up to 4 1/2" in diameter. I recommend you review the dimensions in the pictures carefully because I found that the vertical distance between my way tubes and the lathe center means I wont be able to use the top of the mount with larger stock. I got around that a little bit when I created my mount to the lathe by increasing the height at which it normally would be mounted. All in all, it's a very inexpensive rest compared to some of the nicer ones out there, but you need to make sure it will do for your application. ... show more

The product performed as promised. The parts are very sturdy. The finish was rough, and putting it on the lathe was a hit-and-miss. A great value if you want to spend less than hundreds of dollars on a high-end product.

    • So limited in application it is hardly worth the space to keep it.
I just hate feeling so negative about a woodturning product, but I keep wondering " what were they thinking." It's hard to know where to begin. I have three steady rests beside this one. A home made model that will deal with turnings from small to moderate size. It uses skateboard style wheels with roller bearings. A gigantic semi-custom commercial steady rest good to 24 inches. It uses skateboard style wheels with dual ball bearings. A small steady rest that will handle up to 9 inches within it. It uses skateboard style wheels with roller bearings. These three steady rests have two things in common: skateboard style wheels; and they all take bigger turnings inside than this FJL model. Really, what were they thinking to offer hard steel bearings at the point of contact with the turnings. If there is enough wobble to justify use of a steady rests, there is enough to make the surface of the turning pound into those unforgiving unprotected steel bearings. What were they thinking when they allowed the capacity of their devices to be roughly 3 inches, preventing any turning beyond a baseball bat. These are such major limitations as to basically make it not worthwhile to analyze other features. I wished there was something more positive to say, but right now I am unaware of what that might be. ... show more

    • Great tool at a great price
I do a lot of bowl turning and have wanted one of these for a while but the one I was looking at was just too expensive. I saw this one at half the price so I figured I would give it a try. I was very impressed with the overall quality. The stand is rock solid and super heavy duty. I changed out the wheel with a soft roller blade wheel and it worked perfectly.     • A great support for one side mount lathes.
I have a one sided lathe and sometimes the piece I am carving is too long or too heavy to really be used on it. With this device I can give full support from both ends which allows me to provide a bit more pressure on the cut surface, providing me a cleaner more uniform surface.

    • Could be much better
While this has the potential to be a good steady rest for spindles, it falls short in several ways: The wheels are metal instead of urethane or some other soft material, so the potential for leaving marks in your workpiece is high The arms do not adjust in depth, so you're limited in workpiece diameter The two lower wheels do not adjust in distance apart, again limiting workpiece diameter Of lesser concern but detracting from usefulness: It has bolts and nuts for attachment and adjustment, instead of handles Welds are poorly done, although likely not catastrophically so. I suppose you could buy a set of urethane wheels and handles for adjustments, but then you'd wind up paying what you probably should have spent to begin with and gotten a better steady rest. While this is made of heavy steel, it is limited in utility, and of no use for bowls or large diameter work. The metal wheels are probably the biggest shortcoming, as they will certainly leave marks in all but perfectly straight spindles, and even those if clamped too tightly. ... show more

I recently acquired a wood lathe and am still learning how to use it. One thing that is a problem is spindles, especially the ends. With this center rest it makes that much easier. This is made of steel and is very heavy so it holds its place during use. The rest attaches with a single bolt through the tool base down through the lathe bed and into a very heavy rectangular plate. The plate has a threaded hole to accept the bolt. Easy adjustments with an adjustable wrench makes set up quick and simple. ... show more

    • super sturdy, spindle turning only, needs refinement.
This is a very sturdy accessory, unfortunately some of that sturdiness creates significant drawbacks. As other reviews have mentioned there are some shortcomings that make the use of this accessory very limited. For me personally it makes it nearly unusable. I own two smaller size lathes. I use the smallest one, a Jet MIDI to turn balsa wood salmon and steelhead floats and intricate Christmas ornaments. I originally purchased The MIDI lathe to make the salmon and steelhead floats that I use due to the neon colors or large size of the commercially available ones. I wanted something that looked natural, think stick floating down the river. I assumed that I could use the rest to create floats with very long, thin ends by supporting the larger diameter center. The long ends allow you to easily asses how a jig or bead is floating under the surface. The very sturdy steel bearings mar the balsa, the tool is unusable in this application. The ornaments suffer the same fate except for the ones turned in very dense hardwoods. It will function on my larger lathe for spindle work but that is where the functionality ends. Adjustment, installation and removal are unnessarrly difficult and unlike a majority of lathe accessories it requires a number of your own wrenches to accomplish. It's really a shame because this could be a really great very heavy duty accessory with just a few minor tweaks. I will attempt to find some flat rubber seals or gaskets to use as tires on the bearings hopefully that will increase it's usefulness with my limited turning applications. ... show more

This lathe steady rest is extremely heavy duty, much more than what I need but it works well for me. I was worried that this unit would not fit on my small lathe but it fits well. I will be using it to turn very thin spindles for Christmas decorations. I will replace the metal bearings with rubber wheels for a firmer non-marring grip. ... show more
