Description

A fun and informative illustrated kids’ guide to safely and productively navigating the digital landscape. Cellphones have become a fact of life, with children as young as eight (yes, eight!) getting their very own “devices.” Such boundless access means our kids are in nearly constant contact with technology that was designed specifically for adults. And they’re doing so without any type of road map. Enter First Phone: the essential book that apprehensive parents can confidently hand to their kids to read as they begin their journey into the digital world. In First Phone, Catherine Pearlman—licensed clinical social worker and parenting expert—speaks directly to eight- to twelve-year-old children about digital safety in a manner that is playful, engaging, and age-appropriate. With insights and strategies supported by the latest research, First Phone offers: • guidance on privacy, boundaries, social media, and even sexting (yes, young children need to learn about sexting before it happens!) • best digital hygiene and self-care practices, including when to put the darn phone down, when to turn off notifications, and where to charge • how to be a kind and compassionate upstander in a digital world An essential companion when your child receives their first phone, this book provides kids the tools and information they need while giving their parents peace of mind. • An absolute MUST HAVE for parents of tweens and pre-teens!
If your kid is getting a first phone, or first smart phone, or even if they've had a phone for a while but struggling, getting this book is a NO BRAINER. This book is educational, informative, enlightening, clear, straightforward, and even funny. Dr. Pearlman strikes the perfect balance of appealing to kids and also their parents, I don't know how she does it. It's not patronizing. It is extensive and comprehensive. I wish that she had written this 5 or 10 years ago when my kids were first getting their first phones, it would have made a huge difference for our family, and for the safety of my kids' phone use. It's too late for me but it's not too late for you!! ... show more

  • A must have for preteens
This book was perfect timing for my daughter who will (probably) be getting her first phone in a few weeks when she starts middle school. The book is geared toward kids but very helpful for adults as well. My daughter doesn’t like to read much but she was drawn to the characters who are very relatable. There are tons of great tips for navigating social skills via text, staying safe on social media and using the many apps for learning and good health. It is clear the author has a lot of experience with kids and the real-world challenges they face. I don’t think I realized how unprepared we were before reading this book and I know we will be referring to it time and again in the coming years. Highly recommend ... show more

  • A must-have for preteens, teens, parents, and teachers for safe and responsible first phone use.
This book is critical guide for all families buying their children a first phone. Important issues such as safety, social media, passwords, internet searching, and self-care are addressed in a clear and relatable manner that will appeal to preteen/teens and their parents. Humor is used to make this book an easy read. I only wish I had this book when my own children started using their personal phones. Dr. Pearlman’s advice should be shared with all. I will be buying this book as gifts for many family/friends. It is also a great book for teachers and classrooms. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • A Fantastic, Fun, Helpful Book
This is a fun, helpful book. If you're a parent getting a kid their first phone, you should read this book--and share it with your child. Phones can be helpful, but they can also be harmful, and they are designed to distract. Some of the things kids can access through their new phones can also depress and debilitate them. This book is a great guide through the perils and possibilities and it offers up tips and techniques that you probably never thought of, and will probably want to use. It's also a good companion for children--like Virgil and Beatrice guiding Dante through the Inferno and Paradiso--as they enter the world of digital communication. This will help make your kids thoughtful users of their devices. ... show more

  • This book could save lives!
This book could save lives! When my children were preteens and teenagers, communication was usually between them and others they knew from family, school and the community at large. The Internet dimension via cellphone is only a couple decades old. But instead of only being able to connect with their local community and friends the world is their oyster, both for good and sometimes evil. At such an early age, children are not always able to distinguish the intentions behind an Internet connection. This book not only gives them clear and caring insight, but also can enhance the relationship of their parents regarding their phone use ... show more

  • Irritating!!
I bought this book for my grandson and his parents. While it seems to have much useful information, I was disturbed that one of the profiles the author created was of a boy that dresses as a girl. I appreciate the author stating the profiles represent the background of the many typical students. However, mentioning that “Benni” is transgender is not meaningful. I understand that being transgender is a part of the student population. I am not disputing that fact. I am saying that mentioning Benni as a boy who likes to dress as a girl is not related to what I thought was the author’s message. I fully understand why the other profiles were mentioned, i.e., a diabetic student, a student from a divorced family. etc. The book is goi no back. . ... show more

  • Buy this book BEFORE you buy your child’s first phone
Excellent information written for the child about to have his/her first phone. Empowering for child to read and then share with parent. Required reading for kids and parents in a digital world where there are many important considerations for a child’s safety and mental well being. I wish we had this book before our kids had phones. But I learned it isn’t too late to make changes, set limits, take breaks from social media. Fantastic information in a great easy-to-use format. ... show more

  • A fantastic roadmap to a kid's first phone
This is Catherine Pearlman's second book, and her second home run. She takes a very difficult topic many parents walk a tightrope on (when is my kid ready for their first cell phone? And how do I monitor its usage?) and offers guidance and support for kids and parents alike. My son is turning 8 next month and we will DEFINITELY both be reading this book. Thank you, Dr. Pearlman, for a wonderful book. ... show more
