  • Funny and thoroughly helpful
The author has really funny moments throughout the book. It was really easy to read and I found it to be immensely helpful

  • A few golden nuggets, but bulk was not helpful
There are a few golden nuggets in this book, where the author tells concrete stories about his wins as a father, or gives actionable advice. For example, there's a story about the author refereeing a race between his daughter and a few neighborhood kids. He does a great job, setting the vibe and giving his daughter a peptalk. His energy is reflected in his words, it is a great practical example of how to be a good father. Also, in the section on discipline, the author talks about how he has spanked his kids, but would warn them beforehand: "if you misbehave or do X, I will spank you." This is a good actionable discipline framework that I plan to try. These actionable pieces of advice and positive examples are 5-star worthy, but I gave four stars because most of the book talks about aligning your energy in the "golden area" of warrior, intellectual, and spiritual. It is fluff, and can largely be summarized as "try to live your best life and live up to your potential." In conclusion, the concrete, actionable portions of this book are great, but most of it is fluff. ... show more

  • Highly Recommend for ALL
While geared towards fathers who grew up in a broken home, I see deep value for everybody in this book. Dysfunction can be served in a variety of ways. So, I think if you’re just on a journey of self improvement or growth, this book can be a benefit. If you feel you had a healthy home life growing up, chances are you experienced dysfunction somewhere else. School, work, maybe part of your family that you didn’t have a lot of exposure to. Maybe a friend’s family. Society itself is laced with tremendous brokenness and unbalanced ways to walk through things. We can all be better about our own accountability and finding our “golden zones”. No matter who we are or where we’ve come from. Even if you’re a person who has zero desire to be a parent or a life partner to somebody else, I believe this book would be a benefit to read. I appreciate this book. Thank you to the author, Anthony, for your vulnerability and your willingness to share from the hard things to the things that have worked well for you (and the things that didn’t!). ... show more

  • A must read from a real perspective
This book is so much more than a guidebook for First Generation Fathers, it's a journey through how one man broke the cycle of his families past and broke past it. In my opinion, is not only for men who are now trying to figure out how to be a father when he never had one, it is for single mom's who are struggling to find balance in their lives and for those who are trying to break the cycle of past generations. This book is a raw look into Anthony's struggle growing up as a bi-racial kid who struggled w/his identity and the pain his father inflicted on him. He introduces a really interesting balance of energies that anyone can relate to and find balance within. I loved this book and I love Anthony's truth and even humor in this book. I found myself laughing and crying right from the start. I recommend this book for anyone just searching for guidance on getting out of a situation you were born into and overcoming the odds you were dealt. I use this book all the time to keep myself and family balanced. Thank you Anthony for your honesty and perspective!!! ... show more

  • One of the most moving books I have ever read!
The author is a co-worker of my mine who from the first time i met him, I knew he was something unique. Nice looking guys, well spoken and I knew to be smarter than the average guy. He became a great friend in a very short period of time. When he told me about his book and part of his life story, I told him I wanted a signed copy, hard covered. I have just finished the book about a week ago, and it moved me in so many different ways. Although i share a broken home from 7 years old, my life was less a struggle than his. This book will move you, inspire you and make you look at his life compared to yourself. I am blessed to read his book, sharing his life story and struggles and how he overcame all odds, especially to be where he is today. A happy married man, great wife and two beautiful children. My life was truly lifted by reading this book and is a must read for everyone who was not born into a perfect family. Sincerely Yours My Friend! ... show more

  • Powerful Book for All Guys
I loved this book, and I’m not even a father. What struck me most is how he is so open with his past, and how that’s the only way you can move forward. But in a real way, not in a "born again" or "goody-two-shoes" sort of way. His life's introspection made him realize that there are different types of strength, intelligence, and spirituality, and often the most healthy versions are not the ones we often associate with those terms. There are healthy and non-extreme versions of each, which he describes and gives real life examples of. If you buy this book for any reason, do it just so you can read his eye-opening "Army bag" story. You'll know what I mean after you get to that part. And my favorite phrases of his are “I have every excuse to fail, but I’m going to succeed anyway”... and his oft used... “I felt nervous, I felt scared, I felt normal". Very powerful and inspiring. He shows that you can be a good person, a good father, a good husband, without losing any of your strength or "manliness". In fact, he proves you can become even more strong by doing these things. ... show more
