I loved this book, and I’m not even a father. What struck me most is how he is so open with his past, and how that’s the only way you can move forward. But in a real way, not in a "born again" or "goody-two-shoes" sort of way. His life's introspection made him realize that there are different types of strength, intelligence, and spirituality, and often the most healthy versions are not the ones we often associate with those terms. There are healthy and non-extreme versions of each, which he describes and gives real life examples of. If you buy this book for any reason, do it just so you can read his eye-opening "Army bag" story. You'll know what I mean after you get to that part. And my favorite phrases of his are “I have every excuse to fail, but I’m going to succeed anyway”... and his oft used... “I felt nervous, I felt scared, I felt normal". Very powerful and inspiring. He shows that you can be a good person, a good father, a good husband, without losing any of your strength or "manliness".     • A must read from a real perspective
This book is so much more than a guidebook for First Generation Fathers, it's a journey through how one man broke the cycle of his families past and broke past it. In my opinion, is not only for men who are now trying to figure out how to be a father when he never had one, it is for single mom's who are struggling to find balance in their lives and for those who are trying to break the cycle of past generations. This book is a raw look into Anthony's struggle growing up as a bi-racial kid who struggled w/his identity and the pain his father inflicted on him. He introduces a really interesting balance of energies that anyone can relate to and find balance within. I loved this book and I love Anthony's truth and even humor in this book. I found myself laughing and crying right from the start. I recommend this book for anyone just searching for guidance on getting out of a situation you were born into and overcoming the odds you were dealt.     • There’s something for everyone in this book
Even though I’m not the target audience for this book, I still really appreciated it, particularly the mirror/mirror concept, and balancing warrior energies. I thought it was really good. It's amazing how Anthony Blankenship manages to make such a heavy topic into a light hearted book but simultaneously not being too light about the subject.     • One of the most moving books I have ever read!
The author is a co-worker of my mine who from the first time i met him, I knew he was something unique. Nice looking guys, well spoken and I knew to be smarter than the average guy. He became a great friend in a very short period of time. When he told me about his book and part of his life story, I told him I wanted a signed copy, hard covered. I have just finished the book about a week ago, and it moved me in so many different ways. Although i share a broken home from 7 years old, my life was less a struggle than his. This book will move you, inspire you and make you look at his life compared to yourself. I am blessed to read his book, sharing his life story and struggles and how he overcame all odds, especially to be where he is today. A happy married man, great wife and two beautiful children.     • Great book for even the most basic reader!
I would not consider myself the most avid reader but I couldn’t put this book down. It was so easy to read although the message resonates still months after reading it. The way he writes from the heart and the honesty is what hooked me. Looking forward to the next one and wishing continued success.

But the wisdom Anthony Blankenship provides speaks to anyone going through the challenges of raising a family and the need for balance and healing old wounds. His unique experience of hardship and trauma is a true testament that if he can break the cycle of dysfunction, then so can you. The author connected to me especially because I grew up with a First Generation Father and Anthony's testimonies help me understand and appreciate how hard it was on my own father to figure things out blindly.     • This book is for everybody!
This book touches on subjects that we can all relate to. It has brought me to tears on more than one occasion, knowing I am guilty of things that I swore I wouldn't repeat from my own childhood. I'm not a single mother, nor a first generation mother, but I do come from a background of brokenness, which is what prompted me to purchase this. I am always looking for ways to better myself and this book forces me to examine my own behaviors and deal with the hurt that causes me to act/feel the way I do. I am working to find my own golden zone, and its proving to be very humbling. I love that this book takes you from ah-ha moments, to tears, to laughs and reflection.
