Just be careful to only place this beast in a large, deep trough because the heating element can get quite hot. My only concern would be if the water level became too low and the device was exposed, potentially causing an animal to burn itself. However, as long as you properly install it in a large deep trough and maintain the correct water levels, this device will definitely keep the ice at bay. I have used these heaters through Many Montana winters. They usually last 3-5 yrs and due to GOK end up non-functional. So do all of the others I have tried. They are easy to put into the tank, work well with thermostat. They work out of water which I would rather they didn't, but have a temperature cut off. It is a major advantage to have this go through the water plug esp with young stock who may decide it is fun to pull out a floating heater or bite the cord and get electrocuted. I have built 2 rain harvesters that catch rainwater off of 2 sides of my roofs. I used a 275 gallon tote and a 335 gallon tote, so, 600 gallons total of free water! Now we're getting extremely cold weather and their freezing up inside. The round screw-cap top openings are 5 1/2" and this tank heater measures 5 1/4 at it's widest. Guess what? IT FITS!! Drops down inside the round opening just fine!! Of course, this is after the tote was completely full of water with the top frozen iced up, and I had to chip away enough ice in the opening to begin with, and then nose the heater into the ice and plug it in, and then it slowly melted itself through the ice and into the tote water. We use this for our horse trough in Utah. Our other trough without one freezes every day, the one with this heater has not frozen over ever. Love that it threads at the bottom, we did use teflon tape to help get a good seal so it doesn’t drip.
