This external blu ray dvd drive is easy to use and lightweight. I opened it connect with the USB drive and copied the files that I had to save in the disk and wow it works quickly as any simple USB drive. It is a DVD writer in addition to reading the DVD drives it can write and save the CD/DVD. I would recommend for everyone who are more familiar with the old CD/DVD mode of storage and who wants to save the data in a disk. I was greatful but disappointed that my new laptop didn't have a disc playing, but this player works with all of our laptops. It isn't the same as having one built in, but my computer is so thin it is a welcome tradeoff as long as I have this.

What's to rate for this product. Arrived functionally dead in the water. Opened packaging, plugged into an iMac (with Blueray software installed). No light on unit showing connection to computer. Unplugged then plugged it in again. Same, no light, no ejecting the tray, just nothing. Plugged it into another iMac and saw a glimmer of the light flash on & off. Tried ejecting tray but nothing happens. After about 8 or 10 tries of unplugging and re-plugging into 2 different iMacs It finally connected enough to eject the tray. I dropped in a Blue-ray disk, closed the tray... and... nothing. Never spun up, never mounted the disk onto the iMac. Then it took 4 times of unplugging and re-plugging to get it to eject my Blue-ray disk. So I'm guessing this was a bad unit maybe. Returned it the next day and ordered a different Blue-ray player. OH by the way, other than not working at all. I did find the USB cable attached to the unit much too short. It's like 6 inches. So this must be placed within 6 inches of your PC. Would be much better if the USB cable could be unplugged from the unit to use a longer USB cable but it's permanently attached. ... show more

I received this item, and had initially given it a five star rating. This changed after I put it to continuous use, on a recent trip. The unit had issues. On my first playing attempt, the movie hung after playing for about 20 minutes. I attempted to restart, then shutdown the system, as the playing program was hung. My system would not either restart, or shutdown. I finally tried unplugging the DVD unit, and the system finally shut down. When I came back up, it brought up a display talking about the region codes, and asking me to set the region code, warning that I had only four more attempts at setting a region code. I set the code and the DVD starting playing. It stopped again, with program frozen, about 20-30 minutes later. I had to disconnect the DVD unit, AGAIN, to get the system to restart. It still took me a good while to get the Blu-Ray disk playing again, and it stopped again. I went through this scenario, at least four times, before I gave up. What concerned me more was how the unit was affecting my system, by not allowing the system to either restart, or shutdown, until I unplugged the unit from the system. I do not like anything interfering with my system operations. This unit is being returned, and NO, I do not recommend it for purchase. Now, one other item, which leads people astray. Do not believe that just because you are buying a Blu-Ray drive that you can immediately play movies. There is a big catch, you need to have software on your system that can allow you to not only read, but to write to these disks. Some people use 'free' software to do this, but this can be cumbersome and a potential security concern, as you do not know what is inside this 'free' software. I buckled up ages ago and paid for Cyberlink PowerDVD software for my portable system. It works seamlessly for me. Yes, it costs a little bit, but the peace of mind is worth it to me, for when I want to play a movie NOW, and want no issues, from playing, or security concerns. It is a matter of choice. The fundamental thing that is important is that you MUST have Blu-Ray playing software on your system, or your external Blu-Ray player will NOT work to play movies for you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ UPDATE I initiated a return for this item and had gone to the UPS store to leave it. I had forgotten the Amazon document with the return code. I went back home, and decided I was done for the day. I then decided to try something. I started my laptop up, logged in, and let the laptop fully come to life. I then plugged the Blu-ray disc in and started my playing program. I was able to start the movie, and pause the movie with no issues. I closed the playing program and shut down the system, which unlike previously, the system did with no issue. I went thru this scenario multiple times, not plugging the Blu-Ray drive in until the system was fully up, and closing the playing program, before shutting the system down. All worked as it should. It seems, for my laptop, that having the drive plugged in BEFORE bringing the system up did not make the system happy, which caused issues after the system was up (like the drive stopping playing, and inability to shut system down, with drive plugged in). I can live with not plugging the drive in, until the system is fully up and operational. I cancelled the return and kept the drive. ... show more

I was given a CD to upload pictures to my computer but since I didn't have a cd-drive in my laptop I had to order this. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to connect and set up and it worked easily. Great product!

This is a great portable disc drive for your computer. The wire conveniently can be stored under the disc drive. The disc drive is great especially for computers which nowadays do not have one built in. It’s a good value for the price!
