Description

Supremely insulated with 8 mm twin-wall polycarbonate panels, the BioStar Cold Frame Mini Greenhouse from Juwel is just as robust as a walk-in structure and retains heat better than glass. Three roof windows open independently to optimize airflow and humidity, and an automatic opener affixed to one roof panel will raise and lower as the temperature fluctuates so plants don't overheat. A drip-resistant coating prevents beads of moisture from falling on vegetation even when humidity levels climb.

  • What to Know
We already owned 2 of the Biostar 1000 and ordered the 1500 based on the quality and performance of those. Unfortunately it arrived in a box that had clearly broken open and several critical components were missing, presumably lost when the box was damaged and before someone used Amazon tape to patch the box back together again. Draw your own conclusions. But here is the important information if you are considering purchasing one of these or its smaller Biostar 1000 sibling: 1. The quality of the design, polycarbonate sheeting and construction are excellent, sharing many of the same construction techniques used on the smaller Biostar 1000 sibling. 2. The polycarnobate sheeting is 8 mm thick, providing a substantially higher level of insulation and strength than the 4 mm polycarbonate used by many competing cold frames. It is also coated for UV protection on one side of every sheet to provide extended product life time. 3. Assembly is easy and quick (20 to 30 mins max.) if you assemble on a flat surface, like a patio or driveway. The instructions are also clear, in English and with pictures to help you. 4. The cold frame is extremely easy to move, being light and made lighter by the easy removal of two of the top panels (no tools required). However it is also large so do not recommend trying to move it long distances on a windy day. 5. The cold frame is very easy to disassemble and store flat packed, taking up relatively little room in the shed, garage or basement. It also reassembles just fine over multiple years without issues. This is one of the reasons we decided to buy a second and now a third Biostar cold frame. 6. Based on our Biostar 1000s it is highly likely the 1500 will also be able to withstand the weight of up to a foot of snow for short periods of time. Basically until you sweep it off in the morning or evening. This is another of the reasons we decided to spend this kind of money on a cold frame. We live in the Buffalo, NY snow belt and an ability to survive intact a serious snow load is a prime requisite for any cold frame or greenhouse here. 7. The size is great for typical dimension raised beds and the height for growth provided is better than provided by most cold frames. 8. The 1500 comes with an automated lid opener. Something the Biostar 1000 does not. This prevents unexpectedly sunny weather from literally cooking everything inside the cold frame. Something we've had happen with the 1000 where the provided lid handles automatically lock the lid down and provide no safe option for leaving the lid locked slightly open without sliding the polycarbonate panels towards the center to open gaps at either end of the lid. This approach does work to a degree and enough for most days in the spring but to our cost we have found it isn't enough on some days. So, if you are thinking of choosing between the Biostar 1500 and the Biostar our recommendation would be to spend the extra $s and buy the latter as long as it isn't too large for where you intend to use it. Despite our unfortunate experience from the broken open packaging of the first Biostar 1500 we attempted to buy we will move ahead with purchase of another one once we've received our refund from Amazon. This is a true four season-capable cold frame. We have no affiliation with Amazon or the manufacturer of this product. No form of compensation has been received (or requested) for the provision of this review which is provided in good faith. ... show more

  • Easy to manage, lightweight, and effective
This cold frame is straight forward to assemble, pay attention to the diagrams and clearances and it works. Unpacking and assembly took les than an hour. The wax cylinder opener works well and makes this cold frame easy to manage and won't cook your plants. If you need to open the cylinder panel you just squeeze the connecting arms and it unhooks easily. I've used this cold frame to harden off all the seedlings for our sizable garden, 8 50' rows and some other block plantings. It can be disassembled, however I frequently just move it with the top panels off but keeping the sides together. I appreciate it being light weight but still strong enough for snow and wind. I can see where some people would find it fiddly or not super substantial, bit I prefer the light weight and the ease of taking panels off is great. Will buy another. ... show more

  • I just bought my third one
I’ve purchased four different cold frames from Amazon. This is the only one that held up undamaged for more than one season. The wooden ones blew over repeatedly and came apart at the seams. The Jewel is well constructed and my first one is now on its third year in our garden. I really like the automatic opener which works like a charm. This brand (and all of the other cold frames I’ve bought) blows over easily in our windy area so I put a brick or heavy rock on each corner where it does not interfere with the automatic opener. I place a garden stake in back of it to keep it in place better and prevent blow over. I use them in my raised beds from November to April here in NY. The assembly instructions are not sufficiently clear when it comes to the top corners so assembling the first one was challenging. We learned how to do it and had no problem assembling the second and third ones we bought a year later. This frame is more expensive but will last much longer than any other cold frame on Amazon. ... show more

  • GREAT product!
This is my second one because I love the first one so much and it’s still in perfect shape after 2 seasons. We live in Minnesota, so we take it apart in the fall to store it. It comes apart and goes back together in the spring nicely. It’s VERY durable. Last spring it withstood more than one hail storm. We had ping pong sized hail and I could only find a couple barely visible dents. My neighbor’s glass portable greenhouse was demolished. Very happy I had this product. The vent works flawlessly, opening and closing based on temperature. I never have to worry about overheating when I’m at work. My zucchini and squash plants were a month a head last spring using this. I highly recommend this greenhouse. ... show more

  • Not as expected, flimsy
Difficult to assemble due to the poor instructions but dooable... It is very flimsy not as ridged as expected, opening and closing the 3 c overs l would not expect it to withstand more than a slight breeze. Not expecting it to last more than a couple of seasons.

  • Automatic opener doesn't work
Have not tried to engage the automatic opener until now because it was not yet cold frame season. It doesn't work at all. I watched the video and repeatedly checked that it was assembled correctly. The opener doesn't work. Just buy the cheaper model without this unreliable piece.

  • The 3 stars relate to assembly confusion it’s a 4 to 5 star cold frame
I’ve had for a bit and this is a nice cold frame that is incredibly difficult to understand assembly with the “picture” oriented instructions. Once it’s together, you might be able to assemble quickly the 2nd or 3rd time but the first time is a doozy! Two person job is best way. The green pieces come attached to each other. DO NOT TAKE THEM APART until you look at the diagram. Each is different and you will want to know which is which. This would be so much easier if they labeled things. Beyond that, it’s nicely designed and solid for only around 25 pounds. It comes with stakes to hold it down that cleverly clip to the insides and into the ground. ... show more
