  • Enjoying building up my handmade wardrobe on this puppy
I am an advanced beginner sewist, and I mainly sews garments and home items. I was hunting for a machine that was affordable, from a reputable company (supposedly Eversewn has ties to Bernina), easy to use, came with the most important basic features for sewing (straight stitch, zig zach stitch, automatic buttonholer), and able to withstand thicker fabrics like denim and quilts. I wasn't able to find a lot of information about the EverSewn Charlotte, but based on what I could see, it seemed like a machine that would suit my purposes. I've owned it for two months and have sewn roughly 7 garments on it - fabrics including linen, knit, french terry, cotton, double gauze. What I like: -Very easy to use once you familiarize yourself with the manual -Along the same lines, I have no trouble winding the bobbins and threading the machine. -I like the needle threader a lot (but it doesn't work with smaller needles) -You can control how fast the machine goes.. and it can go FAST -Stitches look great -The needle up/down button -I like that it's computerized. I was scared at first because my previous machine was mechanical and computer products seem to break more often and then you're kinda screwed.. but so far I dig it and hope it lasts me a long time! -It's handled the fabrics I've used pretty well so far (see below for caveat) -It's cute -The collapsible top handle is super handy, especially since I don't have a dedicated sewing space and move it around a lot. Not too heavy. -Comes with good assortment of feet Don't like: -The needle area LED light doesn't shine completely on the needle plate, which makes using the guide marks on the needle plate more difficult to utilize. The needle plate guide marks could've been visually designed better. -When sewing a thicker knit mix cardigan, the machine got locked up on a few corners of seams where there were 4-6 layers of fabric -I accidentally put topstitch thread in the machine and it DID NOT like it at all. However, it may be because i didn't have the proper needle and settings going on because I didn't realize it was topstitch thread. So fingers crossed when I do make jeans, it doesn't cause more fits. As I'm embarking on becoming a more serious sewist, I've learned some important things that may be helpful to you in your sewing journey! You must regularly clean the machine (lint and thread pieces are a sewing machines arch nemesis!). Use a new needle for EVERY project or after 8 hours of sewing.. and change it more often if you're sewing thicker fabrics that dull the needle faster! Make sure you're using the correct needle for the thread you're using and the weight of your fabric. USE GOOD THREAD .. I know it's tempting to use the cheapest stuff you can find but it will create more lint in your machine, probably cause more threading issues, and be less durable in your garment. I like Gutermann. If you're going to go to the joyous "trouble" of sewing your own clothing and home items, use the nicer thread. I purchased this machine with my hard earned money and overall I'm pleased with how nicely it's sewn up my garments. I would recommend it for someone who is on a budget, doesn't need fancy features, and doesn't sew thick/heavy fabrics every day. If my opinion of this machine changes, I will update this review. I hope it's helpful! ... show more

  • Very Nice Sewing Machine
My 20 yr old basic Singer sewing machine was on it's last leg and I needed a reasonably priced replacement. (was willing to pay $300 but no more than $350) What I didn't expect - sewing machines, like disinfectant wipes are a hot item due to Covid. Reason most of the machines for the last 100 years have been made over seas. The pipeline has dried up, so any machine that is here in the US is subject to price gouging. Searched and found EverSewn by Birnina, which is made in Illinois. I was able to buy the Eversewn Charlotte through Amazon but shipped direct from Birnina, at the price on the Birnina site ($239 +$15 to ship) and it arrived in 4 days. I consider myself an experienced sewer, and believe a beginner could use. This machine is computerized but very easy to understand the operations and it performs great. It came with a slip of material , showing that the machine was tested for button holes and other stitches - Machine can make 80 different stitches. Very compact but does have some weight. I liked that the internal skeleton is entirely METAL. Most I checked had partial metal skeletons with plastic. So far it's a great machine. I had one issue with loopy bobbin thread and emailed the Birnina help site. They are out of office but someone responded with tips. The issue bobbin wasn't loaded correctly. Comment - Amazon sells machines through sewing machine distributors. I was interested in a Brother with a manufacturing price of $200. Through one of these distributors that same machine was $449. I found this to be the case with several models I was reviewing. Again this is probably due to Covid, however, I wasn't interested in paying double plus for a non computerized basic sewing machine. ... show more

  • It's built like a horse & it's easy to figure out
I failed Home Ec ( OK. I got a "C" on the dress I attempted to make) but I have a creative side and after having picked up crochet again & making the lining for the purses I was making by using hemming tape, all by hand, I began to toy with the idea of buying a sewing machine. I toyed with the idea not so much to sew clothing or quilt but to play around with appliqué , do some folk art and maybe even use it for mixed media applications. The reason that this machine spoke to me are the following features: needle up/down, the speed slide on the front, the thread cutter on the side & the unique variety of stitches it can do. This machine can do it all. It's built like a horse & it's easy to figure out. I've broken the needle, snagged up the bobbin. I wound a bobbin & have used all of the stitches that the foot that it came with can do. It can handle thicker projects and everything is strategically placed so it's intuitive. The manual must have been written by a teacher. I'm a retired middle school teacher myself. The manual is perfect. It has simple, large, line- drawn sketches. The tables are informative and easy to read. I tell you, I sure wish my Home Ec room had had these machines to learn on. It's perfect for a beginner and as far as I can see, is the only machine even an advanced person would ever need. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!! ... show more

  • Tension is tricky
The automatic threader came with defects and the manufacturer sent me a replacement. I like this machine though it’s not easy to get the tension right. Talked to others and have the impression that the threader and tension are common problems.
