Users highlight its sturdy yet lightweight design, simple operation, and the variety of built-in stitches and features such as the automatic needle threader and LED selection box. While it excels in functionality and versatility, some note minor drawbacks in build quality and accessory inclusiveness.

Pros

  • 👍 Features like automatic needle threader and well-placed LED selection box enhance user experience.
  • ⏳ Quick learning curve, allowing beginners to start projects almost immediately.
  • 👗 Suitable for a wide range of sewing tasks, from simple stitches to more complex dresses and embroidery.

Cons

  • 🛠 Some users find the included accessories lacking for specific tasks like quilting.
  • 💪 While generally durable, there are concerns about the build quality compared to vintage models.
  • 🧶 Issues with thread catching and breaking due to horizontal thread placement.
  • 📐 The mini table extender is cumbersome for some, and the pressure foot tension can't easily adjust for thicker materials.

Should I Buy It?

If you're entering the world of sewing or looking for a reliable, feature-rich machine for advanced projects, the Brother XR9550 is a strong contender. Despite some concerns over accessory completeness and build quality, its performance, ease of use, and wide range of features make it a highly recommended purchase for seamstresses at any skill level.

  • Easy learning curve for a multi-function domestic sewing machine
Style: XR9550 - New Model Pattern Name: Machine
I recently decided to revisit my old hobby of sewing. I had a perfectly okay Brother sewing machine but the more I was using it, the more I became conscious of the many functions that newer sewing machines have that mine definitely didn’t. Some of the features that I won’t be willing to do without that this machine has include snap-on/snap-off presser feet, making a switch from one stitch type to another a matter of seconds rather than minutes; a drop-in bobbin that removes the need to fiddle with the upper thread/needle to pull up the bobbin thread before starting to sew as well as virtually ending the common problem of the bobbin thread snagging inside the machine; a library of stitches that come pre-programmed with optimal stitch length and width… selecting a stitch always starts with the preferred default values every time you select it; a better design for the the upper thread loading. They have somehow designed the unit so that the thread will automatically find itself on the correct side of the path being threaded instead of, as my older machine needed, requiring me to fiddle with flywheel on the right of the machine to get the different parts in the correct orientation to pass the thread around the parts correctly.; a built-in overstitch stitch for fray-prone fabrics; and lastly, the option to either use the foot peddle to control the speed of the stitches or choose to use the programmable stitch speed control for those of us who find their excitement, anxiety, or simple lack of patience leading to what feels like a high-speed chase where your current stitches are the barely in control car careening around the mountainous ess-curves, inches away from flying off into the valley below. This machine is well made, well designed, and wonderfully lightweight. I think it is a great starter machine for those wanting to learn the skills and tricks of sewing. ... show more

super nice sewing machine, worth the money for sure. so simple to use, a little difficult at first as to how to thread the needle, but getting the hang of it, just takes some time. we watched a u tube video on how the whole machine worked and figured it out!

  • Good basic machine

Good heavy duty machine. Weighs about 12 pounds which makes it useful to take to quilt retreats. The threader took a bit of time to figure out, but works well. I bought a quarter inch foot for mine.

  • Mixed Feelings
Style: XR9550 - New Model Pattern Name: Machine
I recently dove into the world of sewing and crafting with the Brother Computerized Sewing and Quilting Machine, equipped with 165 built-in stitches and a host of modern features. Here’s a rundown of my experience: Pros: The easy threading system is a dream come true, making setup quick and hassle-free. An abundance of stitch options means the sky's the limit for creativity. It sews beautifully, handling a variety of fabrics with ease. Cons: The mini table extender, intended to provide extra workspace, often feels more cumbersome than helpful. I've found the auto sewing function less intuitive than the traditional floor pedal. It’s a feature I've steered clear of, sticking to what I know best. Surprisingly, for a machine marketed towards sewing and quilting enthusiasts, it lacks essential accessories like quilting feet, a stitch in the ditch foot, and a walking foot. The horizontal thread placement has been problematic. My thread has caught on spools and broken mid-project, an issue I attribute to this design choice. It seems like a ploy to purchase additional accessories to prevent thread mishaps. The build quality leaves something to be desired. Compared to the solid feel of vintage machines like my mom's 1950s Kenmore, this machine feels flimsy, as if made from a lower grade of plastic. In summary, while this Brother machine offers a range of features that cater to both beginners and seasoned sewers, it's not without its flaws. The learning curve is expected, and I'm gradually getting to grips with its quirks. However, I can't help but wish for the sturdiness and simplicity of older models. A machine with such potential shouldn't cut corners on build quality or essential accessories. Here's hoping future iterations will address these concerns. ... show more

  • All Brother machines seem to be extremely well made, durable, and trouble free.
Style: XR9550 - New Model Pattern Name: Machine
This is a classic. I discarded my 35 year old one when the needle theader stopped working well and the bobbin stopped working well. This one has a wonderful inventory of stitches and the bobbin just drops in. It also has an option for ultra low speeds. That's a godsend for me because my sewing machine skills are not developed. ... show more
