Users highlight its sturdy yet lightweight design, simple operation, and the variety of built-in stitches and features such as the automatic needle threader and LED selection box. While it excels in functionality and versatility, some note minor drawbacks in build quality and accessory inclusiveness.

Pros

  • ๐Ÿงต Easy to use for beginners and versatile enough for advanced projects.

  • ๐Ÿ‘ Features like automatic needle threader and well-placed LED selection box enhance user experience.
  • โณ Quick learning curve, allowing beginners to start projects almost immediately.
  • ๐Ÿ‘— Suitable for a wide range of sewing tasks, from simple stitches to more complex dresses and embroidery.

Cons

  • ๐Ÿ›  Some users find the included accessories lacking for specific tasks like quilting.
  • ๐Ÿ’ช While generally durable, there are concerns about the build quality compared to vintage models.
  • ๐Ÿงถ Issues with thread catching and breaking due to horizontal thread placement.
  • ๐Ÿ“ The mini table extender is cumbersome for some, and the pressure foot tension can't easily adjust for thicker materials.

Should I Buy It?

If you're entering the world of sewing or looking for a reliable, feature-rich machine for advanced projects, the Brother XR9550 is a strong contender. Despite some concerns over accessory completeness and build quality, its performance, ease of use, and wide range of features make it a highly recommended purchase for seamstresses at any skill level.

  • Love this sewing machine!
Style: XR9550 - New Model Pattern Name: Machine
I bought this to replace my over 20 year old Brother sewing machine. I chose Brother again for it's reliability and because my last one lasted so long. This new one is so quiet and easy to use. The many choices of stitches are awesome and the one touch button hole feature works so accurately. It was very easy to learn how to use and there are many videos on the internet with step by step instructions and helpful hints. ... show more

Iโ€™m very happy with this machine. Love all the stitch patterns. Threading is fairly easy. It comes with all the feet needed to use any of the stitches. Thatโ€™s a great value. Comes with the extension table as well. Love the quiet motor and ease of use.

I love this computerized sewing machine. It is very easy to use! The tutorial DVD that was included really makes it easy to use the sewing machine. • Mixed Feelings
Style: XR9550 - New Model Pattern Name: Machine
I recently dove into the world of sewing and crafting with the Brother Computerized Sewing and Quilting Machine, equipped with 165 built-in stitches and a host of modern features. Hereโ€™s a rundown of my experience: Pros: The easy threading system is a dream come true, making setup quick and hassle-free. An abundance of stitch options means the sky's the limit for creativity. It sews beautifully, handling a variety of fabrics with ease. Cons: The mini table extender, intended to provide extra workspace, often feels more cumbersome than helpful. I've found the auto sewing function less intuitive than the traditional floor pedal. Itโ€™s a feature I've steered clear of, sticking to what I know best. Surprisingly, for a machine marketed towards sewing and quilting enthusiasts, it lacks essential accessories like quilting feet, a stitch in the ditch foot, and a walking foot. The horizontal thread placement has been problematic. My thread has caught on spools and broken mid-project, an issue I attribute to this design choice. It seems like a ploy to purchase additional accessories to prevent thread mishaps. The build quality leaves something to be desired. Compared to the solid feel of vintage machines like my mom's 1950s Kenmore, this machine feels flimsy, as if made from a lower grade of plastic. In summary, while this Brother machine offers a range of features that cater to both beginners and seasoned sewers, it's not without its flaws. The learning curve is expected, and I'm gradually getting to grips with its quirks. However, I can't help but wish for the sturdiness and simplicity of older models. A machine with such potential shouldn't cut corners on build quality or essential accessories. Here's hoping future iterations will address these concerns. ... show more

  • Nice overall beginner machine
Style: XR9550 - New Model Pattern Name: Machine
I decided to learn how to sew in my retirement...and this was the machine with a decent amount of easy features. its not particularly difficult to operate or thread up. And it does not operate like a child's machine. Plus, it didn't have any ridiculous flowers and pink colors slathered all over it like some machines, which i guess is designed to appeal to little girls and grandmothers. I would recommend this machine for beginners and if you expect to grow and do more advanced projects. Its sturdy yet lightweight...the shell is plastic like most machines you see, but it does not seem overly cheap or flimsy. The decorative stiches are limited and not overkill. The monogram font is small and probably useless in most circumstances but i could see sewing your name and your prison numbers on your prison uniform if you had to. lol ... show more

  • My First Computerized Sewing Machine
Style: XR9550 - New Model Pattern Name: Machine
I bought the XR9550 to supplement my 32-year-old mechanical Brother VX808 (still works). Learning to use the many stitches and letters on the XR9550 has been a fun learning experience. Pros: Lightweight but sturdy machine body. Drop-in clear bobbin case. Many quick-change presser feet. One-step buttonhole foot. Start/Stop button, Sewing Speed button, and Needle Up/Down button on machine front. Lower/Raise Feed Dogs switch on machine back. Very detailed instruction manual and DVD. Cons: The only con is the hard case. It is not a carrying case--it is a hard plastic dust cover. There is no bottom for the hard case. Do not remove the Styrofoam inside top of case--it will not seat level on top of machine if you do. Since the case has no effect on machine quality and features, I rate the XR9550 5 stars. It is a budget-priced computerized machine that is easy to use. ... show more
