  • Great Bass Strings Scores a Save for a $450 Bass
Color: 5-String (45-130)
Great strings. Was really disappointed with my Yamaha TRBX-505 until I put a set of these on. That and an adjustment of string heights tamed the trebles, and really brought out the mids. Now this has become is my versatile, go-to bass, and I've barely touched my upgraded Lakland 5501 since. I only noticed a few weeks ago that they were sounding duller and that the intonation was out. I was really surprised to see that these strings have been on my bass for 2 years and 5 months. They really held up well. 7-18-2017 - Update... Ernie Ball needs to go lighter on the string windings for the Low B and and Low E strings. Last time I installed, I could barely get the windings though the bridge. This time, I could not get either string completely through the bridge. Each of these strings are resting on the windings rather than the ball end. Check other reviews to see if this is unique to Yamaha bridges or problematic for other bass guitars. ... show more

  • Nice Flats
Color: Group II (50-105)
Had the same issue as others where I got a set with a short scale E string. Amazon refunded me immediately tho, but Ernie Ball sent me a new set. These are almost identical to D'addario Chromes. A little less tension than Chromes tho. These are a modern sounding flatwound. Very growly on my Fender American Original 60s Jazz Bass. After a couple of weeks on them they haven't mellowed out much, but out of the box they are a tad less bright than Chromes. I would definitely put these in the same category as Chromes and Fender flats. ... show more

  • While I love the sound of the strings
Color: Group III (45-100)
This review took some time to determine a rating. While I love the sound of the strings, I still have some issue with the "stickiness" of them. Rubbing alcohol has helped a ton, as wiping them down every week or so has really helped. However, if your fingers are sweaty, they'll still be a little hard to get used to. After really struggling initially with them, I pulled them off and put a new set of D'Addario EXL160 on. While I realized how much I liked the feel of those, the sound, when compared to the flatwounds didn't come close to comparing. So, I yanked those off and put the Ernie Ball flatwounds back on. I just have to be cognizant of moisture on my fingers and/or wiping them down before playing. Either way, they sound fantastic! ... show more

  • I am really please with these strings
Color: 5-String (45-130)
I have installed these strings on both my Ibanez Electric/Acoustig Bass and my Washburn Electric Bass. I was pleasantly surprised to find that these string actually boosted the volume of the acoustic bass when not amplified and that I could play it unamplified in a small group. The string are satin smooth and very asy to play. I was warned the flat wounds are too mellow but I must say these string are crisp and feels like it requires less tesion to ge the same tone making it softer to play. ... show more

  • They feel great, sound terrible.
Color: Group III (45-100)
I was heavy in to home recording and got tired of editing out finger noise and thought I would try a set of flatwounds to help with the problem. The finger noise is greatly reduced, but these have an almost 'tinny' sound to them. I'm getting no more low end, it's almost like I'm playing on the D and G strings all the time, even when thumbing an open E. I'm using them on a Squier Precision J/P bass. It's not high end, but it had an excellent sound with the original strings. I've tried recording DI and through a tube pre and tube compressor chain. Both ways sounded great with the original round strings but not with these. Plus the A string was damaged when I received them, but I didn't notice it until I put the whole set on the guitar so I can't return them. These might sound good in a live situation, or if you are micing a cabinet for recording, but going DI, they don't sound so good. ... show more

  • Ernie Ball flatwounds are AWESOME!!!
Color: Group III (45-100)
First time I ever used flatwound strings and I have to admit these strings are AWESOME!!! The feel and muddy sound they produce is amazing. I prefer these strings over my roundwound strings I use. Ernie Ball strings are exceptionally great to play. I’ll never look back again.

  • Flat Wounds for almost 20 years now!
Color: Group III (45-100)
Ernie Ball Flat Wounds are my all time favorite electric bass string. as an upright bassist, when I pick up the Electric bass, I need that same flat wound feel. and these strings ring true on every gig. I've been playing Ernie Ball for almost 20 years... I've played hundreds and hundreds of gigs on these, recorded multiple albums and countless bass tracks. Ernie Ball Flat Wounds are the only strings I perform on. Also... As a string teacher, I've always met students with a similar problem... "what kind of strings should I get?" Students always ask this same question... I tell them what I play... and then tell them "hey, you know what... these may not be the strings for you... but you need to figure out what you like...and the quicker the better.... and stick with the ones you can count on!" These flat wounds are for me, and I'm happy I took the time to figure it out. Thank you Ernie Ball. • Noisy!
Color: 5-String (45-130)
Bought these for a Sterling Sting Ray 5. Just awful clacking noises when they touch the frets. Checked the setup; not the problem. Replaced them with the DR Legend flats I normally use. No more string noise problem.
