I finally got to use this today for the first time and it's not bad at all. Nothing precision, just soldering ring terminals onto some wire and doing wire-to-wire splices (lengthening a trickle charger cable) and it did the job. The stand is the same flimsy thing you get with every iron at this price, but I've got an old Weller stand I found at a garage sale so I don't have to use the included one. I don't know the melt point of the 1980s solder I'm using; just turned the iron dial to the middle and it worked. I probably should know that. The power switch and power light on the iron itself is a nice touch. I like being able to turn it off and see that it's on/off right on the bench vs. having to pull the plug each time. Only downside is the cord is about 1' shorter than my old iron, but it seems that most everything now is coming with slightly shorter cords. ... show more

Most of this kit works great, although the solder it comes with (if you get a version that comes with a spool at least) is garbage; it doesn't even specify the solder composition on the label, which should be a red flag if you're not new to soldering (but this kit is marketed at newbies who don't know better). It needs almost the highest temperature setting on this iron just to melt slowly. Ended up ruining 2 of the included tips from high-temp accelerated oxidation before I got 60/40 leaded solder and am now using the iron 150°C (3 settings) cooler. My remaining tips thank me. On the subject of temperature control, wait a few seconds after it hits temperature or the actual tip will still be cool. Only the heating cartridge is actually up to temperature when it first hits temp. And it would be nice if the display used Celcius, which is industry standard and in even multiples of 50°, instead of the Fahrenheit units the display actually shows which are completely random numbers. Also, the coiled receptacle type iron holder is a bit flawed because the tip can easily end up directly contacting the holder and wasting a lot of heat if left on. ... show more

I needed a temperature adjustable soldering iron for a circuit board assembly project and this worked great! It came with an assortment of tips for different applications but I used the one that was on it as delivered. The stand and sponge it came with is nothing spectacular but did the job. The temperature dial is in Centigrade so I had to convert it to Fahrenheit to dial in the recommended temperature for my project. Other than that, the price was good! ... show more

Unfortunatly by the time I first used this it was past the return date so I’m stuck with it. Where to start, everything in this kit it cheap. I first put together the stand and it can’t even hold the iron up so I used an older stand I have which is twice the size so the stand is complelty useless. All the accessories in this kit are cheap and not even worth using. The cord on this iron is incredibly short so I had to grab an extension cable. From the moment I plugged it in it had a terrible smell. I thought it was just burning off something since it was the first time I had used it but the smell never went away and the entire area smelled like burnt chemicals. I started using the solder wire but it is not rosin core and just made an absolute mess the worst solder wire I have ever used so I tossed that. I really couldn’t find a tip that I liked but settled on one so I swapped it out. When I turned on the iron the button fell off. After it got hot the tip kept coming lose which is really frustrating when the iron is hot to try and tighten it back down. That requires gloves. I was soldering a wiring harness and hard the iron on for maybe an hour and the the thing completely melted. Total junk, now the iron is useless and there is nothing in the kit I would even bother keeping. This piece of crap didn’t make it through 1 use. I wouldn’t reccomend this for anyone ammature to pro. ... show more
