Gave this to my grandsons for their bedroom. Good think my DIL knew how to set it up but was easy for her and works really great. We enjoyed using it once it was set up. It may sound weird, but I wanted an echo dot, but bought this model and the stand (sold separately) purely because I LOVE dragons! This has such better aesthetic than a black ball on a shelf somewhere. You can turn off parental controls. The ability to gauge the room's temperature is also a nice touch for the 5th generation echo dot. I am also quite impressed with the sound quality, it actually has more bass than any portable Bluetooth speaker I've heard. My only complaint is that you NEED to use Amazon's Alexa mobile application to set it up. It seems like such an unnecessary, over-complicated step to require you to install an app to set something up these days. This took me an entire day. Because the Alexa app is not compatible with my mobile device, and no Android emulators are Bluetooth-compatible, I had to repartition the hard drive on my computer and install an Android-based operating system in order to install the Alexa app on that, and only then I was able to set up this echo dot. However, before I could do that, in the process of operating system installation I accidentally corrupted the Master Boot Record on another drive, and had to use a Linux disk-partitioning tool to reapply partition flags and a Windows repair disk with command prompt to fix the master boot record and make Windows bootable again. This is why it took me a whole day to set up this son-of-a-gun. NONE of this would've happened if they just allowed you to set it up in your dang browser! I bought the new dot for myself. I am not a kid but appreciate the playful new design, the advanced capabilities of this iteration of the dot, and the sound quality is superior to my first and second Gen dots. Downside for me is lack of portability which is probably not high on the list for a kids item, but since the outer design is light colored fabric imagine it could get cruddy over time. the cord is permanently attached so that's a novelty. I may force myself to purchase the matching nest that is designed for the owl dot so I can move it around with me till I decide where it will be most enjoyable. My first dot is nestled into a rechargeable portable speaker, so it has a higher degree of functionality. My 2nd gen dot doesn't get much use and it's knowledge base is limited. I have only had the owl for a short time so I haven't explored all the programming available, but I expected that some of the kids programming might be suitable to help grownup kids fall asleep as I have several apps that provide storytelling well.
