  • Not as good as the old EarhWay
This was quite difficult to assemble. The holes and screw didn't match up that well. The control lever wouldn't move at the start and the whole control unit felt cheap for the amount of pressure that needed to be applied to the lever. Although we finally got it together and working it does not feel like it will last too many seasons. ... show more

  • OK, here's what's happening
The title of MY review will give you a de facto rating of this product. It comes in a big box, already assembled, ready for you to spread to your heart's content (except you just have to tighten the 2 handle screws). Here's my disclaimer: I have not used the spreader for actual dispersal of product yet ( after getting it, my enthusiasm waned). Oh, as everyone says on their reviews, with joyous zeal, the WHEELS are great! And they appear to be. They're made of rubber. Can you dig it? Real, honest, rubber! Even sports a valve, so you can blow it up with your seldom used compressor. Wheeeeee! I'm ROTF with joy. Now the (clearing my throat) bad news. The hopper is made of your ordinary, rather thin plastic. Absolutely disheartening. My old Ortho was made of some type of hard fiber board like material. Clearly, Earthway was cutting corners on that part, as it's not built for the long haul. " I'm 6'1", some other reviewer says. Well, I'm a little taller than you buddy, and the spreader is just barely made for you and me. Any taller, and you'll be bent while you're spreading. The tubing is nothing special, either. Not any heavier gauge or thicker diameter than the old Ortho it replaced. The old Ortho (gave it to a local charity) had handle grips. The Earthway has a handle cover spread across the top. The metering gauge should whet my appetite for spreading, I thought. Upon pushing it to the next higher spread number, filled with anticipation for a nice sounding "click", I heard nothing but the clothes dryer in the background, along with my sigh of disappointment. No click. And there you have it. It's made in the USA, though. It seems as if most of the budget was spent on the wheels, with little left for the rest of it. Since I will only use it around my yard, it should hold up. But @ $80+ in paper, I was expecting more. Oh well.... that's the way of the Earth..or is it Earthway... I dunno. ... show more

  • Great spreader, one caveat
This is an excellent spreader, and I expect to use it for many, many years to come. The pneumatic tires are great. The controls are easy to use and work well. The hopper has a good capacity. The spreader comes completely assembled, and appears to be quality construction. I picked this spreader after reading a lot of reviews. Two potential problems were highlighted in those reviews: the control cable for the flow control rusting, and the flow control setting being accidentally changed when opening and closing the gate at the bottom while stopping or turning. I was pleased to see that the control cable is now sheathed in rubber insulation, so I can't imagine it rusting. Kudos to Earthway for solving a problem that only a few reviewers had reported. As to the very minor issue, when you set the flow setting (easy to determine using the chart provided online by Earthway), you might want to tighten the set screw more than you think is necessary. I looked down into the hopper halfway through my front yard and noticed I was dispensing a lot more product than I intended. Sure enough, I had accidentally bumped the flow control wide open when I stopped the flow while crossing my driveway. Once I was aware of the problem, I tightened the set screw adequately and had no more problems. One final consideration: This is a broadcast spreader. I need to add iron to my lawn on a regular basis, and the iron stains concrete if not swept up shortly after application. It would be nice to be able to block one or both sides (limiting the area of application) when applying product next to certain areas (such as applying iron next to a driveway or sidewalk, or applying certain types of weed control next to a flowerbed). I believe Earthway makes an optional guard that does exactly that, but I'm not sure. Next spring I'll probably try to fashion such a device out of cardboard to limit the amount of sweeping and blowing of concrete needed after I add iron to the lawn. This is a great spreader, I'm very happy with it, and I'm glad I bought it. ... show more

  • Scotts Edgeguard vs Earthway
First impressions I own a Scott's Edgeguard for comparison, still running after 7 years and used on a small lawn area. It does "spot" once in a while so I wanted to checkout the Earthway. In assembly, I noticed the handle Carriage Bolt hole was not the usual square shape so the carriage bolt rides on the metal. Odd but not detrimental. The Scotts carriage bolt hole is square. The handle is about 4 inches shorter than the Scotts and the more expensive Earthways. A cost reduction? Other than the problem below, the shorter handle is not a problem for my 6 foot frame. The Scotts has a Back guard that prevents the broadcast material from hitting the operator. The Earthway does not. The Earthway seems to rely on the Broadcast plate geometry to avoid hitting the operator with material BUT that does not work when you round corners or stop. The instructions say to keep moving or set the control to off. This is hard to do with the short handle, which makes turning the control lever off every-time you slow or stop, difficult. Expect occasional broadcasting of your shoes. The Scotts has a spring, operator activated gate to prevent material from spotting when stopped or adding material. The Earthway requires you to set the control lever to off. If you forget to set it to off, while adding material, the material will spot in a big pile. The Gearbox is the light weight version, not the heavy duty found on the more expensive Earthway Broadcasters. That is not necessarily a bad thing. The Earthway seems to broadcast fine but its to early to tell if it really is much better than the Scotts unit. The Pneumatic tires do seem to give a smooth ride, but again too early to tell over all performance. ... show more
