  • Did Not Let Me Down
We live remotely in central Colorado. After living here for three years I learned that Winter and Summer storms can be pretty severe. So I bought this XP9000ih generator in Nov '22. The typical power outage lasted for 3-6 hours. I tested it after it arrived, drained the gas tank, put a cover on it, parked it in the corner of my garage, and plugged in the battery tender. I fully expected to need the generator some day. That someday was last week when 20" of heavy wet snow took out power lines all over the area. In addition to staying warm and having light, it was really important at this time not to lose the 285 lbs of beef and elk we had in the freezer! I got out the generator and noticed the battery tender wasn’t plugged in and I knew for sure that the battery hadn’t been used in 16 months since I tested it. Some time over the last year I unplugged the battery tender to use that outlet and forgot to plug it back in. I filled up the generator fuel tank with gasoline, crossed my fingers, pressed the start button and, much to my surprise, it turned over just fine. Not only that, but since I had drained the gas tank after testing it it took 5-10 start attempts for the fuel pump to get gas to the carburetor. I was worried the battery was weak and was going to fail, but every start attempt was strong and it finally fired up. Okay, that impressed me. I had a breaker interlock kit installed on my house panel so I turned off the incoming mains power breaker switch, turned off all the circuit breakers, slid the interlock into the lockout position, turned on the dedicated generator circuit breaker and started flipping breaker switches. I left all the big items like the clothes washer, dryer, and range OFF and turned ON everything else including the two well pumps, the hot water/baseboard heater boiler with six zone pumps, a refrigerator/freezer, an upright freezer, a chest freezer, a dorm fridge, and a small wine fridge. I heard the generator rev up to power everything and once it settled down I was amazed that the baseline output ranged only from 0.4 kW to 1.2 kW, usually hovering around 0.4-0.6 kW. We tried using the range (stove top) and the microwave and the generator went up to 3 or 4 kW. We used lights throughout the house normally as if it was a regular day. Then we decided to see how the hot tub would affect the generator. With the whole house powered up and the hot tub heater on and the pumps on low, the generator revved up to 6.5 kW and held steady. So we had a long soak in the snow. It was awesome! We were without power for 96 hours and the only problem we had was when we were heating up the hot tub the next day and we used the microwave (we were making breakfast for a couple of our neighbors). All the power went out in the house but the generator didn’t die it just went to low idle. I flipped the generator breaker OFF and back ON and everything powered up just fine. Okay, lesson learned. The manual states the the generator will run for 11 hours at 50% power on the 6.9 gallons of gasoline in the fuel tank (8 hours on 5 gallons of propane). Fifty-percent power would be 3.8 kW, but we were running it at much less than 50% power, so its runtime was actually much better than 11 hrs. Our power outage lasted for 96 hours and we found we were using less than 5 gallons in 16-17 hours (we turned it off at night). The first day we ran it for one hour every three hours, but eventually we ran it for over half a day every day. And the breaker interlock kit is the only way to go because it allows you to pick and choose which circuits you want to use and which ones you want to leave off. This generator ran great and didn’t use any oil in the 48 hours or so that we ran it over four days! After the grid power came on I shut it down, drained the gas tank, put the cover on it, parked it in the corner of my garage, and plugged in the battery tender (which is going to stay plugged in). That’s because I fully expect to need this generator again some day. ... show more

  • HIgh quality generator
I'm very impressed with this generator. Its a XP9000iH dual fuel unit. It was packaged very well and arrived on schedule with no damage and fully assembled. It is heavy, but rolls around easily like a wheel barrow with the handles. It included all the tools, manuals and hose/regulator as shown in the attached picture. Some past reviews complained about difficult oil door access, poor or incorrect instructions, etc. I found all of these items to be very clear, accurate and easy. The location of the oil fill door and the access to the air filter and spark plug are very clearly marked, so I don't understand other's difficulties with that. The oil fill access door needed an 8mm deep socket (not included, no big deal) to remove two screws and it came off easily. The manual says it needs 34 fl. oz. of oil. That is exactly 1 quart. I used the included funnel to add 1 quart and it was overfilled and spilled out. It apparently came with some amount of oil in the sump. So, I'd recommend adding 3/4 of a quart and checking the level. The battery was discharged and wouldn't initially start the generator. I used the included trickle charger to charge it back up, and in a few hours it fired right up on propane. I bought this generator to power critical loads in my house during a power outage. I haven't had a chance to use it in a real outage yet fully loaded up, but I have no reason to think it won't do great. I'll report back after I get some experience with it. Amazon's price was $600 less than MSRP on DuroMax's web site. And, of course, free shipping with Prime. What a deal! UPDATE: After several long test runs, I can say this is a great generator. I connected it to my house through a 30amp input plug with a mechanical interlock on my main panel and ran everything but my two heat pumps and oven. This included my 3hp water well, refrigerator, microwave and lighting. It let it run for over 1 hour two different times and watched loads switch on and off. The voltage never varied despite the load varying from 1kw to 6.5kw. The generator is amazingly quiet compared to my neighbor's non-invertor type generator of the same size. Overall, I couldn't be happier. Of course, having this ready to go guarantees I'll never have another power outage like we had in Central Texas in 2021!! I guess that's a good thing. UPDATE #2: I load test my generator several times a year to make sure its ready to go if/when needed. This time, it wouldn't crank, the starter just clicked quickly. I was able to start the generator with the recoil rope with no problem and it load tested ok. I contacted DuroMax with my problem. My battery had 13volts so it seemed ok. With that information, they diagnosed a bad starter and were ready to send me a new starter. I then just gave one more thing a try. I disconnected the battery and connected jumper cables from my truck to the generator battery leads. The generator started right up. So, the starter was ok but the almost 2 year old battery was bad despite showing 13 volts. The generator has a 3 year warranty. I stopped them sending me a new starter and they immediately shipped me a new battery. This was great customer service, and I'm back in action, ready for a power outage (that will probably never happen now! :) ) ... show more
