I live 'off-the-grid' and needed a back-up generator for my primary one. In fact, I needed it really badly, as my primary unit's engine self-destructed. Although solar energy is one way in which I "make" electricity for my home, during the Pacific Northwest winters, there's just not a whole lot of Ol Sol to go around. Here I am in the middle of winter and my primary source of power has just died. I quickly researched available options and came to this little DuroMax generator. Reviews here, on Amazon (and through Home Depot, who also sells this brand), tended to be favorable, but there where a few really negative comments, resulting in lower ratings. I read them all and saw a common thread: The problems were related to quality control and end-user ignorance. The ignorance I could do nothing about, and had to dismiss a considerable percentage of those comments which stemmed from that issue. The quality control issues also seemed to have a common thread: poorly fitting this or that... these things tend to lead back to the end-user and either naiveté, inexperience, ignorance or some combination of all three. Only a few reviews actually had component failure and those seemed to be satisfactorily resolved. One reviewer indicated an oil leak developed after the warranty was out, but the seller was working with him on that. Here's my experience: Ordered Thursday afternoon. Delivered Tuesday evening. Set up (30-45 minutes), start up (recoil) and run. Charged house batteries for two hours, turned off and went to bed. Woke up next morning, electric start, run, charge batteries (and run whole house) until ready for work.... shut down, come in and write review at work (on my break - no internet at home). It starts really easily (on LPG - I haven't tried gasoline yet, but have that in case one of my smaller LPG tanks runs out), runs quietly enough that the rain on my roof was louder than the generator. I may need to adjust the engine governor, as I get an overspeed indication on my inverter. Otherwise it performs like a champ! C'mon, people... look at the big picture: you're paying rock-bottom price for a unit assembled in China by workers who typically make less in a week than many of us make in an hour. Let's fairly assess the value of the unit: 1) The engine is a Honda 'clone', making 7 hp. It was probably reverse engineered in much the same manner as Ural motorcycles were reverse engineered from 1940s era BMWs. There's no R&D. There's no search for tiny modifications which will result in minor improvements. There's no re-tooling for newer versions and none of the intellectual overhead Honda has, but the engine is based upon a design which we know to work. Even with good maintenance, this engine will not likely last as long as the Honda upon which it was based, but at 1/3 the cost (or less) it can be replaced when needed (and Amazon sells the replacement engine!) 2) This is a dual fuel generator set, from the factory... no messy modifications. It is warranted for 2 years. If you modify (or purchase) a Honda generator retrofitted for use with LPG, you'll find that Honda will not honor the warranty on their product. 3) Noise level? I read reviews where people were complaining about how loud this unit is! I fired mine up and my wife didn't even know it was going! Go and listen to other generators before you complain that this one is loud! Compared to a Honda EU3000iS (MSRP: $1900+), this unit is louder, but is still not loud. Really.... if you want an analogy, buying this generator is like purchasing a base model Ford or Chevy and then complaining that it doesn't have fit and finish or run like a Mercedes or a Porsche. You have to look at it realistically. My Dad always said "You can't drink champagne on a beer pocketbook". While this may be a one star Mercedes, it's a five star Ford! Right now, this little guy IS my primary source of power, and it's looking very good. I'll update as things progress. UPDATE: I've now had this little jewel charging my batteries for over a month. It has NEVER failed to start. I've had three really minor issues... and two can be chalked up to operator error. 1) I have begun running the generator on gasoline, instead of LPG, because gas is actually cheaper than propane, right now. This little guy can run my refrigerator, freezer, well pump, washing machine and some lights (as well as other small appliances - TV, DVD player, etc) AND charge my batteries.... some of these things run simultaneously. It runs a looooonng time on a tank of fuel. The little fuel gauge on the tank, however, doesn't always work right. 2) Speaking of running all these things - I had it wired to run 120 volts off one leg of the 30 amp/240 volt outlet. The breaker kept popping. I then changed it to run off the 20 amp 120 volt outlet, and all is well with the world. Operator error. 3) I have (he said, embarrassed) had the opportunity to "test" the low oil shut-down. Needless to say, it works. Operator error.... again. SECOND UPDATE: The generator has been running every day since its arrival. Never a problem starting on either gasoline or LPG. One issue I've begun to notice, though: Since gasoline is currently still cheaper than LPG, that has been my fuel of choice; the issue I've noticed may - and may not - be related to running on gas. After the number of hours this has run (I estimate around 200 - no hour meter [note to DuroMax: a cheap hour meter might be a good idea for the next incarnation of this set]), the engine has now "broken in" and tends to run a little fast. As a result, the output shows "overspeed" on my inverter. I confirmed this by choking it down, a bit, and the error signal went away. I'll need to look at adjusting the run speed on the engine. Great generator, I have used 3 times now. I did use the pull start without hooking up the battery the first 2 time I ran it. no issues. The last time I ran it I hooked up the battery and it started on the first push of the button. I have been running on gasoline, but I am about to switch to propane the next time I need to run it. Only 1 issue so far with the unit. Generator would run for a few hours, then start surging, it would then shut down. I could restart immediately; however, it would start the begin surging again and die after about 10-30 minutes. Looked up YouTube and figured out the problem. Had to hook the gas line directly to the generator and bypass the fuel selection switch. As I understand, Duramax will send a replacement switch to you if you ask for one. I just took the fuel line and hooked it back on itself. You will still need to leave the fuel switch on gasoline mode, or the generator will not start. Be sure to get a tent or cover for the generator, it is usually raining when you need to use it. A cover is a good idea as well to keep it clean while sitting in your garage or shed. I would recommend this generator to friends or family. ... show more

    • Incredible value for a powerful and reliable generator

We bought this generator about two years ago, after Hurricane Sandy tore through our area and left us without power for 2 weeks. That had actually been the 3rd time in about 12 months that we had no power for a week or more. We had gotten our hands on a small generator sometime in the middle of those ordeals, but after Sandy the wife said "get the biggest one you can find!" Like others, I was a bit skeptical about this generator for a few reasons... the lesser-known brand (at least to me), the foreign origin, and simply - it seemed too inexpensive to be as good as it claimed! Boy am I glad that I put aside those concerns and just ordered it. At the time we ordered it, the price was about $1100 - still well worth it in my opinion. It came via freight and the delivery company was very accommodating about working out a delivery time with us. It was very well packed. This is one seriously heavy item, but as long as you have a little space, you can wiggle it around to get it unpacked by yourself. I know a few other reviewers had theirs ship with a dead battery, but mine was ok. It was a little tricky to hook up actually, but I eventually got it connected. It comes with the feet and wheels separate, so you need to install them yourself. It's pretty easy, but a socket wrench set or racheting wrench set will come in handy. Mine appeared to be empty so I added oil before using it. There was no sign of any leaked oil inside the package like some others have reported. To turn on the generator, you open the fuel valve, pull the choke, and turn the key. It's really pretty easy. There is also a pull starter if you are having battery issues. Once you turn it on, there's a circuit breaker to control whether the outlets are live or not. Our electrician advised me to connect the generator to the house first, then turn on the circuit breaker on the generator, then gradually turn on breakers inside the house after flipping the transfer switch to slowly ramp up the load. There is also an idle control switch - which looks like it was re-labelled "auto throttle" in the pictures here. It basically causes the generator to idle at a much lower (and quieter) speed when you turn it on. It's good for testing and other times when you don't need the noise. There is a pretty big variety of outlets on the panel too - 50A, two different 30A, and two 20A. There is also DC12v available. We use the 50A now when we hook it up to the house, but before we had the transfer switch installed we got plenty of juice out of the 20A with a few long extension cords. With the 50A connection to our panel via a transfer switch, our electrician told us "this will pretty much run everything in your house". And it does - it'll run all the lights, TV's, computers, 2 fridges, microwave, coffee maker and yes - even the central air. Just for full disclosure - we have a gas stove, and I haven't had the nerve to run the washer/dryer on generator power. Also - we've not had to use it during a real heatwave yet, so I suppose the load from the AC was never at its peak. Still, there is no shortage of power coming out of this unit. Plus - I was surprised when I realized that this unit is considerably quieter than our previous much smaller generator! Don't get me wrong, it's still loud - they all are - but not the kind of loud I expected from something outputting this much power. Two years later, it still runs great - starts every time with just a quick turn of the key, even after a long stretch. I try to make it a point to start it every few months to cycle out any old gas, and keep things loose. Once I ran it in the back yard for a few hours just to power my mitre saw and table saw while I built a small shed - it didn't even blink. I also found that under a medium load, it gets a very decent runtime out of a single tank of gas - in some cases up to 10 hours or more. Hopefully this helps your decision if you're at all hesitant to try this brand. If what you want is a spectacular value for a very powerful portable generator, this absolutely fits the bill. I ordered the same unit for my in-laws who live across town and their experience has been just as good. ... show more
