Easy setup. Puts out lots of heat! Solid, heavy logs which hold heat after the fire goes out which is nice. The remote is great! Not common on units in this price range. It has on/off and a built in thermostat. I set it to 70 degrees, place the remote across the room and it automatically keeps it in that temp range. The logs are an issue when first setting up. They aren't numbered and the pics are not very helpful for placement. It's like a puzzle. Have fun. They also put off an odor for the first few hours. After that, they are beautiful and the amber padding and small rocks included add a great ambiance. I purchased a universal gas appliance connection kit which is a good idea since it doesn't come with a lot of connectors. I can't believe this was under four hundred dollars. The media could not be loaded. I've never had a gas log ventless appliance type fireplace until I purchased my most recent home. The one that was installed by the builder always gave me trouble and it finally stopped working after about 5 years (pilot wouldn't stay lit). I'm definitely a DIY type person, so I decided to do it myself and order the Duluth logs and appliance. I was very impressed how much easier this appliance was to turn on once I installed it (took me about 3 hours since I was being pretty careful and it was the first time I had ever installed something like this). Overall the system is working great and as expected. The remote control is awesome and works from across the room with no issue. I did use the Natural Gas port (since that's what I have) and I did have to untighten the little screw that is supposed to be unscrewed a couple of turns if your gas pressure is too high which makes the pilot light not turn on (per the instructions and it was no big deal). If you are not comfortable working with a gas appliance then please call a contractor to put it in, but it's really not that hard if you have some DIY in you. I also used the old fireplace logs around the new one to give it a more custom look. Typically with any ventless fireplace system, there's going to be a bit of smell for the first few times you turn it on, but the smell eventually goes away. We installed a couple of months ago and we had a problem with very bad fumes we called the company was told to open windows and let the unit run several hours and it would burn off the new so to speak and would stop the fumes. Well it did but it also was putting out smoke in those fumes that we didn't notice at first it sorted every room in my whole house every ceiling. This is a very costly damage to my home that can only be fixed by cleaning and repainted every room. I have 3 rooms that was just less than a year ago completely repainted will have to be redone. Very costly damage makes me want to rethink my purchase a little to late ... show more

I bought this to replace a set we've had for about 12 years that needed a gas valve. A new gas valve is almost as much as this is, so I opted to replace it all, and the big box stores were all at least 2 weeks out with brands with less than stellar reviews. Set-up was easy, instructions were very clear. You will need a 3/8" flare to pipe fitting for the gas valve inlet as well as flex pipe to connect between your gas shutoff valve and the gas inlet on this units gas valve. Those are not included. If you dont have a regulator on your tank already for those using LP, you'll need one as well. This unit will run on natural gas as well which is convenient. I like the remote control for this one. My old unit used a wall switch, so being able to control this one from anywhere in the living room is nice. My only complaint and reason 4 vs 5 stars is the artificial logs that come with it. Whatever kind of paint or coating they're covered with does not handle the heat and does burn and turn black after a couple uses, and smokes and stinks very bad. I had hoped the smell would subside after the "new" cooked off but it didnt. Ended up putting the fake logs from our old set in this one to fix that issue. Those that dont have another set of fake logs for it I suggest trying position the included logs out of the direct flames or using only as many as necessary for aesthetics. Other than that we're pretty well satisfied with this setup so far. And just in time as it's been in low 20's overnight the first week we've been using it. Takes the workload off the heat pump and keeps the wife and dogs very cozy. ... show more

Installation of the gas was easy but I still chose to have a professional do it. I also choose not to add a fan and I appreciate the quiet. The heat gets in the room anyway. The logs are concrete or similar. The only negative has been the placement of the logs. It is very important as to not create a carbon monoxide issue. On day 30 the remote control quit working. Not a battery issue - changed all. The link on the purchase for customer support took me to an Amazon rep who only wanted me to return the whole unit. There was supposedly 90 days of free customer support & troubleshooting included in my purchase but no link found!
