  • Have always been the best and still are!
Style: Spirocore Bass Pattern Name: Single Item
I've been playing upright bass most of my life and have tried a few different types of strings. In the end, I aways come back to Spirocore Mitells S42. The S42 is the string length, they are actually full sized strings but it is more common for people to use them on 3/4 size basses most common size of bass since almost no one actually plays full size). I would say that these strings have the most diverse sound pallete, you can get "your sound" out of them depending on how you play them. They also have a very important characteristic "growl" for jazz players. Another important factor is the harmonic response of these strings; they "cut through" the band/mix much better and you can be heard. As an upright bassist, I feel it is more important to be heard, clearly and distictly than to use a string that higlights the dark and muddy sounds of the bass. I feel like there are two strings that have the best qualities to them and can produce the iconic sound that most players want: Spirocore Mittell (sometimes Weich), or gut string. I prefer the spirocore sound, personally and feel like most "wannabe" gut-like, synthetic strings don't actually sound like gut. I find that the synthetics strings have a plasticy sound, and they can feel stiff on the hands especially left hand). Spirocore Mittells can be a high tension string for some and over the years I have wished there was a string that could deliver the same, but with less tension; THERE ISN'T, you must deal with the slightly higher tension, but it is the sacrific you get for a much better sound. The last thing I want to mention about these strings is that they last for a very long time. Oh, one more thing, no other string has the same "thump" and "punch" to the sound except maybe Spirocore Stark which I have never tried). So there you have it, you can shop around for different strings and spend hundred or even thousands on experimenting but usually the Spirocore Mittell will always come back around the rotation, because they are basically the best "all around" upright string. If you want to save soe money, go with this string and never look back, just learn how to play them. Many people have wondered about the "G" string of this set sounding more treble-like, whiney, thin, or whatever. While these strings do have a "zing" to them, and it is represented most on the "g", I believe that what you are hearing at the bass, is not the same as what is heard to the audience and in front of the band. Happy practicing! ... show more

  • Awesome

The Spirocore has a rich and complex profile on my full sized English bass. I prefer them over the Piastro Passione they replaced.
