Features

  • It offers bass players a superior black coated string without sacrificing the crisp tone, clarity

Description

The K3 Coating is the first coating that players report, "sounds as good or better than uncoated strings." DR's new, remarkable, proprietary and patented 8487168 K3 Technology Coating is the first coating that makes no apologies and no excuses for not delivering sound equal to uncoated strings. Players tell us that these strings have more volume, less unwanted overtones, greater clarity and articulation then standard, uncoated strings. Yet, they provide the same protection due to corrosion and perspiration as well as increased tone life that coated strings are known for. From the Manufacturer BLACK BEAUTIES™ Black Colored Bass Strings aren’t just about the sleek and sophisticated look. They feature a round core wire and a stainless-steel wrap wire to maintain brightness and feel. All strings in the set are coated with a jet-black version of DR’s K3™ ultra-hard coating, delivering longevity, more projection, fewer unwanted overtones, and outstanding clarity and articulation.

  • Quality product, but not my flavor
Gave these 5 stars cuz the quality is there, the black strings look good on the maple neck and butterscotch body on my Ray24. I’m used to Elixirs but wanted to give something different a try based on cost more than anything. These strings are BRIGHT right out of the box and have broken in quite well however I think the thing that I dislike the most is the coarse-ness of the strings. They are not smooth in anyway, and while I know they are not flat wounds, they are just more rigid than just about any string I’ve ever played. But had them over a month now and they are still going strong with no flaking. With the maple neck and these strings, while they look good, it’s harder to get the warmth I like. So if you’re looking for longevity and like a bright sound, maybe play a lot of slap, you’d prolly dig these strings. If you’re looking for a warm smooth jazz tone, not sure these will be a great fit. ... show more

  • Tried on a whim.
DR Black Beauties have gotten lots of good reviews. I was customizing a Stu Hamm Urge and wanted black strings. I considered tape wounds, but the Black Beauties came in medium scale, so I thought I would try them. They are nice, smooth, strings with a black coating that seems pretty tough. I was careful running through the Hipshot KickAss bridge and didn't seem to rub any off. The length was perfect. I tuned up, set the intonation which went well, and proceeded to give them a try. They are very comfortable to play. They look fantastic. Very black. Nice tones with nothing too far to the left or the right. A good playable range. Very happy with them what for me was a novelty string. These are the real deal. ... show more

  • Disappointed
Thought these Black Beauties would look great on my Black MusicMan. Changing the E string first, following the instructions to the letter by bending the end with a pair of pliers carefully, etc., all seemed fine. The tone seemed bright as the roundwounds I was replacing. I installed the A then the D. When trying to tune up the D string, it wouldn't come up to tune, it just kept slipping, and eventually popped out of the hole. I tried again, same thing. It just couldn't get enough grip on itself to stay in tune, even with the 90 degree bend and firmly shoved in the tuner hole. Never had that happen before in 30 years of playing. Now I know how useful that wrap on the end of most bass strings is. As for the two strings that went on, they feel like old sticky strings when new. Too bad, it would have looked cool, but I'll just go back to boring looking, but great sounding Rotosounds. ... show more

  • Excellent for sem-hollow Ibanez.
I have always liked the sound of acoustic bass over electric. Their sound is much more well-rounded, but unless you like the Country Western look, there really were not many choices for bassists. That changed when Ibanez put out their semi-hollow basses. I fell in love, but it came with some crap strings that made more of a "thunk" than a "hummm", so I decided to change the strings out to these light gauge black strings to enhance the dark colors of the instrument. Wow!! what a difference!! The light gauge really brings out the "humm" of an acoustic instrument on my new bass. I feel better playing. I sound better with them. I doubt I will ever go back to a heavier gauge or even a solid body. ... show more

  • they look nice, and sound great!!! (40-100)
They do have a less tension feel to them, they are different, but i would say buy maybe a set with 105 instead of 100 for your E string, should make up the difference, next time i will buy 45-105 for my bass, but thats probably what was installed on it, but they definitely have a different feel, but try a set, i like em!! We will see how long they last....i'll update!! ... show more

  • Like falling in love all over again! ...with your Bass!
Fast and Smooth. Tone is great. Playability is fantastic! The are going on all my guitars from now on! I’m done with bare steel/ nickel strings. These coated strings are the future!!

  • It sounded thuddy and boring on my jazz bass so I took them off
These had a unique zing to its sound when first installed. It lacked beef on my jazz bass but I just let it be. Then after 2, 3 weeks of barely playing on them, the zing was gone. It sounded thuddy and boring on my jazz bass so I took them off. Later I thought, "You know, they kind of have a tapewound sort of tone." So I installed them on my P-bass and sure enough, it's like they came back to life again. Another reviewer mentioned how these have a tapewound-like quality after a few weeks. So be aware of it before purchasing. Also, I got these not realizing these were a lighter gauge but I ended up liking the flexibility they have. ... show more

  • Nice grip and can play longer.
I like these extra light weight coated strings. I have some weakness issues in my hand and the coating makes me feel like I have a good grip. Sliding can be a bit rough though. With the lighter string, I can also play for 3 hours easier than with the thicker strings. Plus is that they look cool too.
