  • Great saw, and economical if you use it correctly
Color: Dewaltâ Yellow and Black
I originally bought the Porter Cable abrasive saw, and that saw was very good for what it cost. However, I did not like all the cleanup I had to do to the parts. I then bought the blade that goes to this Dewalt DW872 thinking that I could use it on the Porter Cable abrasive saw instead of the abrasive blade. Granted, I have no doubt that some do use it, the many kind people who responded to my inquiry about using the metal blade at the high speed of the abrasive saw was a unanimous, “Don’t do it” The higher speed of the Porter Cable Abrasive saw would damage the blade, and possibly cause injury the user when teeth of the blade fracture off at high speed. The thought of that was a bit frightening. So I sold the Porter Cable to a friend for what I paid, and ordered the Dewalt DW872 to replace it. I already had an extra blade, and I decided to keep it as a backup. Now I want to address the reviews that said that the blade wore down and became useless quickly, and it made the saw expensive to use. That is just nonsense, if the saw is used correctly, the blade does a wonder job, and makes many more cuts than a stack of abrasive blades can do. The not so secret about using this saw is to take your time. If you see sparks, there should only be a few. The saw should be allowed to make the cut with moderate pressure from the user. Sure it will still cut if you push it through as fast as you can, but that is when the blade heats up, and destroys itself. The cuts I made with this saw were amazing. I cut angle iron from a bed frame, and the edges were bright, shiny, and smooth. The saw has a nice clamping system, and if you read the manual it explains why the clamps are there, it has one more clamp than an abrasive saw needs. That is because one other important step in using this saw is to clamp your work down tight. They ad another clamp that presses downward to keep the blade from pulling the metal up out of the other clamp. The teeth of the blade shave metal away, and it takes a lot of energy to shave steel, so that means you need an equal amount of energy to hold the work down. If you push the work back into the blade more, it will catch part of the up-turn of the blade, and that can pull whatever is in the first clamp straight up and cause damage to you, and your work all at the same time. So be sure to read the manual, and learn to use as many clamps as you can, how still the metal is, is the first half of all that matters when using this saw. The other thing that is equally important is to go slow, don’t force it. This saw is much heavier than the Porter Cable, and everything about it is better quality, the motor turns much slower, and it uses gears to turn speed into power. ... show more

  • Excellent purchase
Color: Dewaltâ Yellow and Black
Have had the saw for one day. Early assessment: action of the hinge is smooth, and the included carbide-tipped blade will cut through 16 ga tube steel with just the weight of one's hand on the handle. The hold down clamp hasn't seemed necessary since the horizontal clamp that holds the workpiece against the fence has seemed sufficient. The saw is much quieter than I feared it might be. The base is sturdy and attractive, and the blade guard operates smoothly. I would look for two improvements in future models of this saw: some sort of shaving collection port, and a more well-machined fence, as the included stops at frequently used angles are not well dialed in. I had to make a few adjustments/test cuts to find square. I understand that shaving collection ports are not common on this type of saw, but it would be a nice option to have. One word of warning, I initially purchased this saw from Lowe's, but had to return it immediately after it arrived. The mounting point for the blade guard control arm on the cast iron base had snapped in transit; that is, the cast iron bit snapped off. This is worrying from a durability perspective, but shouldn't be an issue in standard use. A bit of confusion was resolved—it took close reading of the package contents to realize that the $494 version does come with the standard blade. All other Amazon offerings are blade upgrades.) The included blade would be more than adequate for most use cases. Overall, very satisfied. ... show more

  • Great time saver.
Color: Dewaltâ Yellow and Black
I received my saw on the day that Amazon promised. The Packaging was damaged in a couple of places, but the product was not damaged. I also ordered an extra blade, because this blade is not found at the local hardware store. Lowes can order them, Amazon had mine in 2 days. I use my saw on an industrial job site. I'm in a business of pipe and structural welding. We have made numerous repetitive cuts, such as flat bar from 1/8" to 3/4" thickness, small bore pipe, and angle iron. This saw saved tons of man hours and money compared to a welder with oxy/acet torch. It makes smooth straight or miter cuts, with no clean up time. It is also great for miter cuts on building hand rails and structural projects. I would highly recommend anyone that is working in a welding shop or job where you need a saw that is versital and portable, should try this saw. I want to give some safety precautions with this saw. It does throw sparks from the product you are cutting, wear all of the proper PPEs that are described in the booklet provided and keep all flammable away from work area. Also, don't rush the cutting process. Let the saw do the work, do not force the cut. GREAT product!!! ... show more
