  • Big Bang for the Buck
I took a gamble on this and I'm glad it payed off. Obviously, it's made in China. Virtually all banjos this inexpensive are made in China. And because of that, you have to set up the bridge (instructions are included). So after that, it plays like a dream. Other reviewers have complained about stuff like high action, warped neck, and frets needing to be filed down, but I didn't have any problems there. Maybe I got lucky? I don't know. The tone itself is good for the price, and the resonator is a nice touch. A closed back resonator on a banjo in this price range is rare. If you're looking for the sound of a banjo with the familiarity of the guitar, this Dean is probably your best option unless you've got the $1600 to spend on a Deering 6-string. ... show more

  • Happy Hubby
My husband has wanted a six string banjo for years, as he plays the guitar and didn't want to change. I finally did my research and landed on this beautiful Dean Backwoods. The reviews were great and when I simply googled good 6 string banjos, this was one of the best for the money. So glad I did. It is beautiful. Took it to the music shop to have the bridge installed and have it tuned and I have a Happy Hubby. ... show more

  • Dean Backwoods Banjo, Six String surprise
After a lot of consideration I went for the Dean on the basis of the reviews on Amazon. For some time I have wanted to add a little different sound to our band (Celtic and Blues) without wanting to go the whole hog and learn a new instrument. I took the advice of many here and had the Dean set up at my local guitar shop. The strings were a little too light out of the box for me. I like the action, the resonance is loud and bright, the playability is good and the sound very bright and clear. The 6th string can be a bit muddy. Overall- first impressions are good. If the sound works for our group I'll consider a 5 string banjo. Four stars and a bit. ... show more

  • Returned a shipping damage; cautionary tale
Be advised when buying instruments: you never know who is shipping or how. Ordered a Dean banjo well before it was needed (TG) and received it on time. Opened the single corrugated wall cardboard parallelogram box it was shipped in that felt more like a case interior package than a shipping carton. Inside were three pieces of low grade styrofoam styled packing and a partially tensioned banjo - in two unfortunate pieces. The banjo snapped from the heel to the 18th fret in the classic axe-handle split. While I could have glued and proceeded (some repair skills) it was a gift and I wasn't going to do that. Returned the 'jo and got one locally that I could see. Who knows how many inexpensive instruments shipped out of case are damaged/destroyed at the dock like this but I would think sturdier packing and more padding would be the norm in a delicate musical instrument. Sad; not offputting from Amazon's sake, but a lesson nevertheless. ... show more

  • Craftmanship of a 10 year old worst neck you will ever see for 400 dollars
The media could not be loaded. Worst neck i have ever seen on a 400.00 guitar rough sawn marks up and down the fretboard didnt even take the time to sand it down before pressing in the frets making every other fret high and impossible to play defected, frets up and down the fretboard were sharp as a razor blade as shown in my video not even a hint of trying to make it half decent 3 frets are not even pressed in properly making it even worse, defected i have seen better necks on 75.00 guitars, so buyer beware expect to have the whole neck refretted, sanded and dressed im sure there all defective like that because Deans quality control is terrible and i might add there shipping packaging is terrible two pieces of styrofoam inside a box and the guitar just flops around in it during shipping.....any how its going back to Dean. I have 46 years of playing so im not new to guitars and expect some setup but not a entire fretboard restoration so its either defective or there just all crappy smh ... show more

  • Backwoods guitar/banjo
This turned out to be better than expected. The quality of this instrument is very good. So far I have had to make no adjustments to it. It is a lot of fun to play and well worth the money.

  • Great instrument!
This is a great instrument for the money! I only needed to do minor tweaks to set it up. Setting the bridge with a tape measure and adjusting the truss rod to bring the action into place. The quality is quite good, nice wide fret board, very playable. Stays in tune. Has a great tone. I would recommend this purchase! ... show more
