Description

Pennington Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue helped revolutionize the grass seed industry. This durable, heat-tolerant variety was an early leader in putting low-maintenance, disease-resistant lawns within the average homeowner’s reach. Decades later, this economical, traditional tall fescue grass remains an industry standard for cool-season lawn grasses. This tough, drought-resistant grass thrives in lawns that receive 4 to 8 hours of sun. Plant it in the early spring or early fall and start to see results within 8 to 21 days. This 5-pound bag covers up to 1,000 square feet for overseeding an existing lawn and 415 square feet for starting a new lawn from scratch. While most grass seed companies buy their seed on the open market, we are the only major grass seed company that works directly with a network of dedicated growers. Built on decades of trust and integrity, our relationships with seed growers and their families now span multiple generations. Our legacy of working directly with farmers to bring you the finest grass seed possible helps ensure their success and ours. At Pennington, we know our seed and the farmers who grow it. From field to final product, that's the Pennington way.

  • Superior vigor and growth
Kentucky 31 Fescue is a great all purpose grass that grows well in sun or shade. I’ve tried dozens of others and this stuff really grows the quickest and thrives.

  • Great seed for shady spots where other grass won't grow. Use Peat moss to germinate.
I really like this grass for the shady spots on my lawn where the zoysia won't overtake or the St Augstine either. It survived the San Antonio summer in the shady spots and did pretty good against the winter annuals coming in. Winter annuals are pretty invasive here so you need a lot of density to choke out their seeds. I will say that I always had terrible results with seed germination before I started laying down peat moss, like 0-10% germination. So I buy 2.2 compressed peat moss in roughly a 2 peat moss to 1 grass seed ratio and I get excellent germination. I don't bucket soak at all. I till the ground and then lay out a pre mixed grass seed and peat moss mixture, use my tamper (I supposed you could just step on it) and then water daily until I need to mow it. I figure its 40 dollars for peat moss and 30 for seed and that is equal to about 800 dollars and 8,000 lbs of sod if you install it yourself. Care instructions are about the same for sod and seed anyways. Use peat moss, plant in shady spots and this seed will serve you well. I would guess it won't invade the sunny parts of your yard so there will just be a little competition where light is 6-8 hours of the day. ... show more

  • birds love to eat this, but enough to go around
Slowest germinating grass I ever bought. 3 weeks later after daily watering it sprouted in less than 1% of what I put down. Seems like very old seed. Update; 4th week and now about an inch high and filled in quite well.

  • I’d go with Scott’s. Don’t waste your money
Not impressed. Germination rate pretty poor. Seeds were always above 60 degrees and always watered minimum 3 x per day.

Great product! It is perfect growing near other types of grasses and blends in well. Arrived fast and highly recommended!

  • For the price, I can’t be mad.
Overall, the product worked. Did it do as good as the more expensive seed? No, it did not. But in terms of getting decent coverage at a cheap price, it was great. I did have to significantly oversee though And water for an hour a day for the first week and a half to two weeks. After that time, the grass started to takeoff. Overall, for the price, I am very happy. Don’t expect it to be like high-end sod farm seed. There’s going to be seeds that have lacking germination. But if you rake it in, aerate, Fertilize, cover it with some straw It will work. Just make sure you’re mindful of the temperature for tall fescue. It seems to be a seed that is very picky on outside temp and soil temp. Do it at the correct time of year and follow the instructions and you’ll get results. ... show more

  • Did not grow after 2 weeks+
I planted 2 weeks ago and nothing has grown. I am so upset. I have never had a problem before growing seed. this seed should have grown by now. I do the same thing each time I have to plant and no problems, have grass, but with this brand. or maybe just this bag. nothing is growing. I cover my seed each time so the birds or wind does not get to it. and water 3 times a day to keep moist like I have always done with my seed and nothing with this go around. so disappointed. never buying this seed again. ... show more
