  • Plenty of power to dig holes!
Once I got the hang of this, it worked great. Although at first I did have to do a little bit of wrenching on it... When I first started using it, after about 10 minutes the auger would stop as soon as any downward pressure was applied (which is mainly it's own weight, you don't really need to press down). This was frustrating and I thought I might have a dud. I needed it to work to be able to dig the 36" deep 12" wide holes for my footers however. So, I decided to take it partially apart to see if I could find the culprit. The gears were completely fine, but the centrifugal clutch seemed to be loose from the shaft. What is supposed to happen: The spinning shaft is connected to a centrifugal clutch (see picture), which has springs that upon centrifugal force push against a cylindrical housing that is connected to the gears that turn the auger. However, the clutch could move independently of the shaft, so it needed tightening. The drawstring housing just unscrews to give you access to the other side of the shaft (you'll need a socket on one end and allen wrench on the other). It may sound complicated, but it's only a handful of screws and then you're right there. After tightening that, this thing worked awesome. I dug 13 holes, 3ft deep by 12" wide. I read several reviews about the drawstring breaking, so I was very gentle with it and had no issues. I would recommend using the smaller auger (6") first and then the bigger(12"), just to give you a pilot hole to center on. Maybe if you have two people that wouldn't be an issue, but I did not and it has a lot of snort. I found I was able to dig down 8-10 inches at a time and then would need to lift it up to knock off the mud/clay. This probably would depend on your soil though. Also, it comes with a small plastic container for mixing the oil and gas. It isn't anything great, but it gets the job done very easily. All in all, I really like the auger. It cost slightly more than it would have been to rent one for a couple days. Now I'm ready to go for my fence rebuild next year. ... show more

  • Wow! Made tree removal job a breeze
I had been dreading digging up some dead evergreen trees for 2 years now. I ordered this tool because it wasn't a lot more than renting and it came with three augers. I put in gas, it started right up and when I went to test the tree remove process it was incredible. It went from a test to job completion in about a half hour -removed 8 dead evergreens by the roots. Next, it took less than five minutes to did the hole for a large flagpole. ... show more

  • Strong Machine
Have only done 8/40 of 42" deep x 12" wide post holes. Soil is damp compact clay. Machine gets me about 36" down before it bogs down then I switch to 10" bit and it gets me the rest of the way more or less. The 10" bit cuts like butter. So it does what it's supposed to. Pull cord has already broke but I was able to fix it. Now on/off switch won't work. I have to use choke to shut the machine off. Maybe I can fix that too. I think this auger was worth the money spent. I don't understand the manual as there is no where to add lubricant to gear case. I will need to ask seller. Don't hesitate to buy if you are concerned. I can deal with the little issues as long as it does what it's supposed to do. ... show more

  • Not enough power to dig in clay, even with the smaller 6" bit
I bought this with the intention of digging eleven 12" diameter and 50" deep holes for a deck. My soil is clay. I started with the 12" bit and found the unit came to a complete stop just over 1' into the hole. It didn't have the power to bore through the dirt. I tried boring holes in other locations and with smaller bits but with the same result. This unit simply does not have the power to bore holes in clay. Perhaps if you have loosely compacted sand this might work but otherwise, I would pass on this auger. I will be attempting to get a full refund as it does not work as advertised. ... show more

  • Company Stands Behind It Product, EXTREMELY Powerful Auger!!
I had and issue where one of the Auger Bits broke at the weld, reached out to the company to see if they would stand by their product. They were extremely helpful and insisted that they send a replacement, I'll buy any future products I need from them due to this experience. It's hard to find a manufacturer that stands with thier product in today's world, let alone one that does the right thing. ... show more

  • Ok for the price
Worked okay until we added the extension. 3 holes in and the rod sheared right off. We were digging in lose soil and some clay toward the bottom.

  • Impressive
This auger is very impressive. In our DRY clay soil it might take us 30min to dig a 12x36 hole. We've done 6 so far and honestly didn't expect the bit to hold up like it has! It does take 2 rather strong people to run the 12" bit through compact soil/clay. Update, we should have bought a bullseye level when we bought it. It would really help to make sure the holes are straight ... show more

  • Great machine for the price
The auger worked great for the money. We build dock in the foothills of NC and we dig holes for the pilings. The auger does a great job in the NC red clay. A lot of power, so hold on to the machine or it will whoop you!
