Great value for your money. Wanted to get my son started off with D&D and this was perfect. Fun and made it easy foe him to learn. Great for ages that can read and up!.

  • Great starting set to learn with
Style: Physical Book
I have always wanted to learn to play and watching videos of players play it to learn and getting the handbook has been helpful to learn. But adding this and learning to play with friends has been great and informative. It doesn't hold up to learning from a seasoned Dungeon Master who is well versed in the rules and creative design of the story it holds, but still was a great starter to learn and be creative with the characters they created for this set. They add a great set of characters they've pre-made and thrown in some beautiful blue dice in this set, at least the one that I received. If you are wanting to experiment a bit before finding a group to learn from, try this out. I did this and then found a new player group and learned even more. But overall, this is a fun start and recommend it as a new player myself and still learning. Enjoy. ... show more

  • Great set for D&D beginner
Style: Physical Book
I bought this set for my son, to start his journey into gaming. The box includes everything you need to start playing a D&D game, with pre-made character sheets that you can use to start playing immediately without having to bother with confusing character creation. As a long time D&D player, I understand character creation is a lot of fun, but for a group/person who might want to try the game mechanics without feeling overwhelmed, this set is designed for people to sit down and start playing within minutes using the included character sheets. The adventure has enough content for multiple gaming sessions and is more of a mini-campaign. It includes much more content than I had anticipated. I think the set is worth buying for a beginning group, even if you decide not to use the pre-made character sheets. ... show more

  • A great beginner set!
Style: Physical Book
There is so much to like about this DnD set. It is a great value, you get some premade worksheets, dice, a scaled down version of the Player's Handbook, and a great self-contained story. This story is one of the better ones that Wizards of the Coast offers and is a wonderful on ramp for new players, but also provides an engaging hook for those who may be experienced with the game. The premade characters and generic and their builds and backgrounds, but for starting players they provide enough to work with. Experienced players may enjoy building their own characters or tweaking what is in the game. ... show more

  • Good for completing your collection, not the best starter kit for 5e
Style: Physical Book
I have both the original 5e Starter Kit with Lost Mine of Phandelver and the Essentials Kit with Dragons of Icespire Peak, so I really picked this up for completeness and another starter adventure. I will say that the other two I mentioned are more of a value for the money, and this set seems like Wizards of the Coast cheapened out a little. While both this and the original Starter Set include a 6 dice set (which was enough in the old days but 7 dice sets are the norm now with a second d10 marked for hundreds) and a 32 pg Starter Set Rulebook, Lost Mine of Phandelver is 64 pages while Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is just 48, and it lacks the Rules Index which LMoP had on the back. It's also leaner on creatures, having only 20 didn't creature listings to the original's 27. I'm not going to compare either to the Essentials Kit, which is priced higher and includes far more by design. The illustrations in the new set are nice, and most of the player characters depicted strongly resemble the characters from the 1980s animated series, which seems to foreshadow their return in some form in the future. The maps are smaller, and seemingly fewer, but the adventure is interesting and includes a variety of encounter types and environments. I enjoy all of these, so it's not a waste of time or money for this one. In fact, since LMoP had been around so long and is fairly well known, you might be better to start with this one so you're players get a different starting experience. ... show more
