  • Fun game to play with friends
Did take a while to learn the rules especially when nobody knows the rules, luckily there are videos on youtube which make it easier to learn. I don't think this game has much replayability unless you add in new players though .

  • Fun, but could be better
Fun game, but the cult personalities don’t actually come into gameplay

  • Funny concept that serves as a great filler game due to quick play through
The production quality for the pieces are great as all the wooden meeples are nicely decorated. The backstory for each of the five characters will make you laugh. Even the cards are of a nicer quality than the typical board game. The addition of a quick how to play video that is linked to from the instruction manual is easier than just using the rulebook, but you still need the rulebook for the more unusual cards you will draw. After playing this with two and three players, I think more players is more fun because there will be actions you can take that significantly penalize other players and can just seem even more punishing in a two-player game. I also appreciate that there are options for making the game more challenging by adding an additional two undercover inspector cards. The game plays pretty quickly once you know the rules and you need to watch what other players are up to. Most importantly, you want to watch for what bonus agenda, and therefore which pieces, your opponent selects as there is a limit for each category of followers. The only negative I found was that the rulebook has a printing error where a sentence ends prematurely, which is shown in the picture. I really wish there was a scorepad for help in adding up all the points. ... show more

  • Well-made but boring asf game
I played this game with my boyfriend and it kind of drags on and on. There isn’t much interaction and it ends up being pretty boring for two players.

  • Fun puzzle w/ quirky theme
Cultivate is a game I'd never heard of before spotting it on Amazon, but it turns out to be a fun little abstract puzzle/strategy game. The presentation is clean and colorful, and gameplay has just enough extra oomph to give the game some lasting appeal. The whimsical colors and broad gameplay appeal seem to be sullied a tad in our circles with the cult leaders and associated theming—I think this game might have drawn in greater numbers if they'd chosen a more friendly theme that didn't turn player thoughts toward more controversial subject matter. It doesn't take itself seriously in this regard, but I just think it's a missed opportunity if I were designing a game. ... show more

  • Light weight competition and strategic patterns
I played Cultivate with two other people and all of us picked up the game quickly from the instructions and enjoyed our three-player experience. It is light weight, teachable, has amazing artwork, and is also a good balance of strategy, competition, and fun, satirical theming. I wasn’t sure upon ordering if this would be an adult/teen only game, but I think the cult theme is light enough to play with kids, so long as they are old enough to read and follow the general game play. Each player is a cult leader, but otherwise the game is primarily pattern oriented, focusing on collecting meeples (converted followers of different focus groups), who have their own color and design. The meeples must be placed in the top most space of each column, and there are also investigators who may show up undercover as followers, and hinder the placement of new converts. Each player has their own goal (picked at the onset of the game), which counts toward additional points if fulfilled. And players are competing not just independently, but can also steal and swap followers with competitors, which changes the game quite a bit. When the first player fills up their entire board (compound), the other players have one last round before the scores are counted. The game experience would change a lot depending on which cult leader you choose, which game board and goals you pick, how much other players are after your same type of meeple followers, and the luck of the draw, so it has a high replayability. I look forward to playing it again! ... show more

  • Quick and simple strategy game with cards that shakeup the action, price is steep for what's offered
My girlfriend and I played a 2-player game of CULTivate. The instructions were clear and concise with the game being quick and easy to learn. We each chose our cult leaders: Lee Sakhando for me and Paula Nation for my girlfriend, we randomly selected our compound boards, and we chose our agendas. Based on our selections, we came up with completely different strategies. After the initial introduction to each of the unique cult leaders, there is not much of their personalities that come through during gameplay. Throughout the game, we played cards and exchanged followers in order to focus on filling our compounds for points, gaining advantages, and working on our agendas. It was an enjoyable experience with a surprising amount of strategy involved. We played cards to build up our compounds or reserved them for a more opportune time. There were cards that forced player interaction that shook up the play field and our priorities. In the end, I won the game with a well-built strategy, playing my cards or exchanging followers at the right time, and a bit of luck. Overall, the game was quick and simple with our first game taking about an hour. We thoroughly enjoyed playing through the game and look forward to playing against friends. The price of the game for what's being offered is steep sitting currently at $40 making it bit difficult to recommend. If the game were priced in the $20-$30 range then it would be a high recommendation. ... show more

  • Interesting and Funny Board Game - Not for Faint of Heart
This is not a game I'd recommend playing with your children, or with anyone who doesn't have a bit of a morbid sense of humor. It's a game where each player is a cult leader, trying to get as many "followers" as possible to join their cult. If you play it with the right people, in the right mood, it can be absolutely hilarious. If there's anyone who might be insulted or just who takes things a little too seriously, you may want to pick a different game. Overall, the design of the game is okay, but we made up a few of our own rules to make it more interesting. It's a good start that is flexible enough to build on a little, and if your group is the right group, it can be a blast. Unique and interesting idea, four stars. ... show more
