This was a gift for my grand daughter who turned 6. She was a little too young to understand you can only move the control knobs only so far. My 8 year old grand daughter had a blast with it. So the 8 and up suggestion is about right. There is no volume control so it is pretty loud. I read reviews where people cut the speaker wires but the music is part of the game. It's a timer to try and get the toys out before the music stops so I think that would defeat the purpose of the challenge.This is the 2nd claw machine I purchased, the back and forth control stopped working so I sent it back, received a credit, and bought a new one. Even for an Amazon-sold product (our expectations were already low), this is the absolute cheapest quality you can buy. We got this for our daughter’s birthday and literally after one day of use, it stopped working properly. The claw won’t respond to one of the levers telling it to go forward or backward, so it is now useless. It only works on 2 out of 3 axis. The instruction sheet said to change the batteries. I was skeptical of this, but we did and…Of course it didn’t make a difference. It’s still not working. Also, your ears will hate you for buying this product. The music is unbelievably loud and annoying, and the mechanism is loud as well—you can hear gears grinding and the chain rattling every time you move the claw. Low quality junk. Amazon, please clean up your lawless frontier and allowing sellers to market complete garbage through your storefront. Because this machine is cheap, plastic garbage, and an absolute waste of money. A very cute toy my niece loves it and still plays with it even after Christmas last year. Still works well however if one thing could be adjusted it should be the volume because the music is very loud. Other than that its a good gift for a kid!

I received today and tested it out to see how it works. The music is horribly loud and there is no way to turn it off or turn down volume. Be aware that this is quickly gets super annoying. The claw controls work well and I would have kept this if not for the music.
