Description

A detailed twentieth-century vintage watch guide by a watch collector for watch collectors. The early 2000s were an important period, spanning a time when mechanical watches had quite rightly retaken their place in the world market. We all may have a digital device in our pocket that is more accurate than a mechanical watch, but a timepiece has soul, personality, and history. The collection in this book is a step into the world of vintage watch collecting.Over 100 vintage watches, their restoration, and their historiesA range of photographsIntricate researchAccessible reference material Showcases some of the most interesting, luxurious, and functional 20th-century (1930–1980) mechanical timepieces ever to be produced, including Heuer's Autavia, Rolex's Submariner, Gallet's MultiChron, Zenith's De Luca, and the Universal Space Compax. This book and the watches within will intrigue both the casual and avid enthusiast. Read more

  • Awesome book with superior pictures!
If you collect older Swiss chronographs, you must buy this book! Superior pictures and ample information on each watch. This is my favorite watch book amongst the dozens I own! Buy it!

  • If you love chronos, buy it. If you don't, skip this one.
As others have said, this is very chronograph-heavy, but thats not a problem for me. If you aren't into chronos, maybe skip this one. If you are, this is perfect for the coffee table. Its got pictures of and information on watches from brands often overlooked, sleeper watches and some we've all heard of. There are pictures of movements, casebacks and dials alike, along with a lot of excellent information. Definitely a must have for the chronograph enthusiasts among us. ... show more

  • Great pictures and variety of amazing vintage watches
About 240 pages of great vintage sports watches, mostly chronographs and divers from some of the well known brands but many of the lesser known. I love this book because many of the watches featured are actually attainable by most people. Some watches are featured on a single page with a brief description and some have a double page layout, with about 5 or 6 photographs, sometimes including vintage ads and a longer description. Overall, a very cool book at a very affordable price. ... show more

  • A day of captivated reading
Collecting vintage watches is different for any collector as the personal interest in a timepiece hinges on a high number of details specifically desirable to the individual which makes each collection unique. And so it is not easy to publish a collectors collection to capture a readers attention from cover to cover as I did for me. My own collection is different yet in line with the history, functionality and rarity that I value also. The images and written word ratio is spot on and would satisfy one who in little time likes to leaf through the book or one who, like myself, dedicated many hours reading with detailed interest to further educate myself. Fantastic book. ... show more

  • Faltan relojes más icónicos
No está el Heuer Mónaco, el primer cronógrafo automático y un icono de la relojería que hizo inmortal Steve McQueen.

  • Buy for the Photos and the Inspiration
Alistair Thomas Gibbons services and restores vintage watches for a living. "Chasing Time" is a photo-history of some of the best vintage watches in his collection. The photos are simply stunning. If you are the type of person who likes looking at photos of beautiful old watches, this book is a must purchase. What I especially enjoyed about this book are all the watches from obscure companies that went out of business long ago. This book reminds the collector that vintage watches to do not have to be expensive to be beautiful and worthy of collection. Highly recommended! ... show more

  • If you're into vintage watches and you DON'T have this book, you're doing it wrong!
Author Alistair Gibbons is the longtime proprietor of atgvintagewatches.com , one the the web's premier online destinations for discussion and information about vintage watches. This book is an outstanding look into the collection of a true aficionado. It's full of some of the most brilliant watch photography around, and highlights some of the cooler, more obscure offerings from the 1950'5 through the 1980's. It also features most of the heavyweights of the vintage watch world- Omega, Universal Geneve, Rolex, and Heuer. Given the resurgence of popular interest in all things vintage, this book would make a perfect gift for anyone wanting to learn more about horology from the time of the golden age of the mechanical wristwatch. ... show more

  • A welcome stroll through vintage chronographs.
Alistair explores vintage Swiss branded chronographs (mostly) with excellent commentary and even better photography. He touches on the icons and the obscure while keeping true to the watch itself: the history, the motivation and of course, the brand and movement relationships. Aside from a few Rolex and other divers, this book focuses on Swiss chrono movements and the variety of cases that housed them. He even has my Bucherer in there, albeit with a date function that mine does not have. Still, nice to see it in a book!! If you’re a #watchnerd, you’ll find having this book in the coffee table the quote enjoyable. @clocksontheorocks here. Now go buy it!!! ... show more
