  • So much fun & replayability crammed in a small box!
I put off trying this game for so long because the premise didn't really interest me; I'm not normally a huge fan of word games. However, I regret not buying it when I first heard about it. The Good: This game is comprised of a stack of double-sided codenames cards, stack of key cards, cardboard agent/bystander cards, a plastic card stand, and a timer. That's it, and there's nothing wrong with any of it. Cards are easily readable from either side of the table, colors on the "key" cards are vibrant, and the cardboard cards are solid with good artwork. Setup is super quick - lay out a grid of 25 codenames, separate the agent/bystander cards, and draw a key card - done. Instructions are easy to understand, and easy to teach to new players. We take this game almost everywhere we go and have taught countless people to play, both gamers & non-gamers alike. Gameplay is team-based, and your experience can vary widely (in a good way) depending on the group you play with. As a spy master, you are playing to your teammates. Sometimes that's super thinky, other times fairly simple. While sometimes a really close or thinky game can last for a while, I've never once gotten this game out and stopped at a single game. The design of the key cards & random layout of the codenames cards means the game has virtually unlimited replayability. The Bad: If I had to pick something, I would say the downtime while the spymasters come up with their clues. This will also depend on your group. While there isn't much to do for teams to do while spymasters think, our groups typically use that time to sow confusion among the other teams, so it's rarely a dull time. The Indifferent: I definitely consider this a party game. I don't feel it can be played at anything less than 4 players, and really shines at 6 and up. If you want a 2-player version, try Codenames: Duet. If you're considering this game, all I can say is "buy it". Play it, and I don't think you'll regret it. It's one of those games that is really hard to explain what it is that grabs you, but once it does you'll want to keep playing. I watched countless reviewers singing this game's praises, but still didn't think it sounded like something I would enjoy. How wrong I was. You can find this game on sale anywhere from $10-$20, and I can think of very few games that bring as much fun and replayability at such a low cost. ... show more

  • Soo fun! Makes you use your brain
We first played with new friends on a catamaran cruise. We had a BLAST! from there we have purchased for our family, friends, and selves. The gameplay takes a bit of time as the code masters have to first figure out their clue then the team having to consider the clue and the cards. This could be good education game for young teens finding the similarities of things being the same similarity and different as a word can have many meanings. Super easy to learn and nice size for traveling to parties or small spaces like boats or RVs. ... show more

  • Haven't played a game like this before!
Purchased after playing with family recently. Pretty easy to learn but the nuances of the game make it very interesting and fun! Great for teams as few as two or more but takes a little longer to play than what is indicated in the description. Could be a little more difficult to play with younger children mixed with adults. Older children with adults would be a good mix, but children under 13 may want to play with others their own age. ... show more

  • Team-based wordplay fun
There are always a few questions I have before buying a game, so I'd like to clear those up for other buyers. WHAT IS THIS GAME? Codenames is a team-based game where you lay down 5x5 tiles of random words. Each team is split in two, containing one Coder and 1+ Guesser(s) (so if you have 6 players, 1 Coder and 2 Guessers per team). The goal of the Coder is to link the words on these cards together somehow, but you can only do so using a single word and a number. For instance, if there are tiles with "alien," "UFO," and "Jupiter" on them, the Coder could say "Space 3." Then the Guesser(s) would have to try to guess that their team's Coder is talking about those 3 tiles and not any of the other 22. There's a catch though. Each tile corresponds to a certain team's point. Only the Coders see the layout of these points. The first team to get all of their points wins. Let me clarify. Using the same example as before, it's possible that both "Alien" and "UFO" correspond to Blue points but "Jupiter" corresponds to a Red point. If the Blue Coder says "Space 3," and a Blue Guesser chooses those three tiles, then Blue will get two points, but Red will also get one! Maybe it would be better to say "Martian 2," that way "Jupiter" won't be picked. Making sense? On top of that, there are also (Civilian) tiles that correspond to neither side. If "Jupiter" belonged to neither side, then Blue can stick with "Space 3" getting only points for Blue team. This helps eliminate confusion sometime, especially if you can't think of that perfect word. And lastly, there is a single End-game tile, the Assassin. If the Blue Guesser chooses the tile that corresponds to the Assassin, then Red team wins that round. You better watch that the word you say doesn't relate to that tile AT ALL. IS IT FUN? Heck yes it is! I've played this game with 6 people and with 4 people, and both are a blast. It's enjoyable being the Coder, trying to figure out that perfect word so that you can link 3-4 tiles in one round. It's also great being the Guesser, attempting to whittle down the options; why "Martian" and not just "Space?" Hmm, "Mars" is also an option, maybe "UFO" isn't right. REPLAYABILITY? Tons. The tiles included are double-sided, which helps with space. And worse case scenario, you can always write out words on pieces of paper and include them with the rest of the tiles. DRINKING? I haven't really played this as a drinking game, but I have played it while drinking, and it's still a blast. It doesn't really get old that fast. If you were to play it as a drinking game though, it would be quite easy to add rules, and I'm sure would make the game even more intense. ANYTHING BAD? Not really. It is a game that you could make on your own with just pieces of paper (and a lot of time), but I doubt it would look as nice as the pieces that come with this game. Plus, I think the creators deserve the $15 for creating the idea. There's also the fact that it requires 4+ people, but that usually isn't much of a problem. Playing with an odd number of people doesn't affect the game too much either; the team with the extra person wouldn't be able to progress any faster or anything. CONCLUSION If you're looking for a fun new game to buy, try out Codenames. You won't regret it. ... show more
