Style: easy cleaning
I bought this pan as a Christmas gift to myself! There are 5 cats with myself and my housemate here, and while we have numerous cat pans, the box in my closet seems to be very popular (or poopular as Lucy Ricardo would say!) and it became apparent I'd have to intensify my litter box duties. So I looked for a new cat box and found this here at Amazon. I read the reviews and it seemed folks either loved it or hated it with not much in the middle, and those that hated it either had cats who pee kinda sideways (on the walls of the box) or had admitted trouble with assembly. So, without kitties who pee sideways, I decided to give it a shot. I found a VERY nice deal on a used-good condition box in the Amazon Warehouse section and spent half the going price, so it felt less risky to try it out. The box arrived and the little clear window that goes on top is cracked, but, I bought it used so I can live with an aesthetic issue. I scotch taped the crack on both sides so that no kitty would get tail hair caught in it. The filter panel and swinging door: The panel's nubs that are supposed to snap into the divets are really really loose. I don't know if this is a result of the previous ownership - maybe the plastic warped? I just rest the top panel in place, the lip keeps it from falling forward and that's good enough for me. I took the swinging door off, my cats wouldn't care for it overly much, so the weight of the door no longer pulls on the top panel and it is not an issue that it doesn't fit very well into place. None of the above issues deals with the mechanics of the box, so it doesn't really detract from my rating at all - if I had bought NEW IN BOX, I might feel differently. Maybe these things did work properly when new. I am willing to forgive this after only paying $38 for the product. All items stated to be in the box were in the box. I taped up the hole I read about from other reviews on the bottom of the base piece. I don't anticipate an issue, but at least the tape would help slow it down if that was one. I also put a lawn and garden large thick plastic bag under the box, leaving the area for the pull out door clear. Again, I don't anticipate an issue but an ounce of prevention, yadda yadda. There are not many parts, but the instructions leave much to be desired. The biggest thing I noted after my first attempt at satisfactory construction was that you must make sure you push the handle piece in all the way, so that it is flush. It doesn't "snap" into place as they suggest, you just need to give some elbow grease and make sure it's in there all the way. Otherwise, when you fit the top part over, and slip the handle into place, the inner tray doesn't quite flip back correctly, and it was lifting the front of my box (when I had the swinging door still attached). Since it didn't feel "right" and I knew others had had assembly issues, and therefore box issues, I took it all apart and started over. At that time I pushed the handle into its groove fully, and the sifter and pan then worked like a charm. There are a couple little tabs on the side of the inner pan which help you lift the "step" and grate which then comes up and out toward you, so that you can put the liner in place. I had some trouble finding that, but once I did it was smooth sailing. If I had gotten the handle assembled correctly the first time, and found the side tabs right away to put the pan liner in place, this assembly would have taken me less that 15 minutes from opening to the box to having litter in it. very simple once you know how it goes. I should add I'm legally blind, and those instructions were all but useless to me. Color instructions would have been nice; the greyscale all fades together a bit, but this is my issue and not the illustrators. I can't fault them for not making it in large print when I didn't call em to ask for a large print edition. HOW IT WORKS: It does a fantastic job! I introduced my kitties to it by setting them inside with clean litter, so they could see they were not jumping into an unknown (It is a pretty high ledge). One went in and anointed it straight away. Everyone has that one cat who must be first, yes? I sifted it then a few hours later before bed and was quite happy to see it all work as it was supposed to! Sifting slowly is key, and not overfilling the litter beyond the line. I had to feel for the line in the back as it isn't very well marked, and I think I can say that even for those who are not low vision! But it's easy enough to feel for it without dirty litter in the way. I sift two or three times a day, and plan on emptying the bottom tray about every two or three days, depending on how much collects. How often you need to empty that pan really depends on how much use it gets, not a time frame of two weeks as the advertising claims; not that I'd want to keep smelly cat doo in the tray for that long; it would smell no matter what! I took a plastic grocery sack and double lined it. I pulled out the base drawer and just emptied it into the grocery sack. I could have just picked up the liner itself and dumped it, then relined the bottom tray with a new liner, but I'm trying to get the most use from the heavier liners the pan came with. Sifting and emptying the waste pan took me all of 3 minutes from lever pulling to dropping the bag into the trash can outside. My neighbor also has a multicat household, and they came over and gave it a sift to see what it's like, and they are now keeping an eye out for a good price on this box. With a cat who doesn't pee sideways, and as someone who made certain to get the assembly correct, I feel this box will last me a long long time and I'd definitely recommend it to others. There is very little litter trail coming out of the box now, which is an excellent side bonus! Thanks, Catit! I'll be saving to replace our other boxes with this model eventually! ... show more

  • Bad design, needs to go back to R&D
Style: easy cleaning
Bad design, wastes litter, not enough capacity, can't handle 2 mid size cats I've used the "tippable" sifting Omega Paw litter pans for years, but decided to try the Smart Sift because some of the plastic parts on the Omega Paw will break after about 4 years of use. I'm very disappointed with the Smart Sift. It's clearly a design that needs to go back to product development. First thing I noted is the litter area is overly small. Smaller than most would consider for even a single small cat. Adequate for a kitten, but not a single full size cat certainly not two. When cleaning-- "tipping" the pan via a lever arm, litter flows through a grate in concept straining the refuse while unused litter flows into a reservoir. Tipping a little further dumps the refuse into a separate lower pan. Then pushing the lever back (should) move the litter back where your cats can use it again. That's the concept. Problem is the reservoir is way too small to handle the recommended amount of litter, and, once the strainer starts accumulating feces and clumped urine, it blocks the sifting action. Even when slowly tipping, as recommended. This causes you to loose a significant amount of clean litter each day. The clumped feces/urine caught on the strainer also directs unused litter to the side, so it fills portions of the reservoir while other areas only fill if you shake the entire pan side to side, while holding the lever and trying not to shake litter out of the pan. As another reviewer mentioned, if your cat urinates on or near the sifting grate, it will cause a clump to form in the grate--requiring removal with a stick and further mis-directing sifting litter. Then, when you reverse the lever to move the now strained litter back to the pan the lever will not move far enough so a large amount of "good" litter is trapped behind the sifting grate. So--one gets to add a fair amount of new litter each day. Kind of negates one of the benefits of clumping litter. When you get and assemble the Smart Sift, likely the first thing you will notice is that the exterior dimensions are much larger (especially height) than you might have thought. I'm not saying the manufacturer misstated dimensions. Just, in person, it seems much larger than any other litter pan I've seen. It's because of the basic design--it has to be taller because of the storage pan underneath the main kitty used sifting pan. It has to be wider, due to the lever and pivot mechanism. So you end up with a much larger overall litter pan, with much smaller area for your cat to actually use. All this for roughly twice the cost of the large size tipping/manual sifting litter pan from their competitor. (the OmegaPaw) In spite of the exterior size issue-- if the product functioned well, did not waste litter, and had enough capacity for a couple cats with a daily sift, it would be nice. Unfortunately it fails in all these areas. ... show more

  • It has made our life easier!
Style: easy cleaning
I am so glad we purchased this litter box. Assembly was okay. One of the clips doesn't quite close, but it is secure enough. Also. One of the rubber feet had become unglued. Easily glued back on. I want to thank all the previous reviewerd that mentioned using the handle slowly. That is truly the trick! We had to change because I can no longer handle the cat litter and we wanted an easier solution. It is located in the master bath. Why we are so pleased. 1. It is easy to use. The daily removal of clumps. Quicker than scooping! And much less messy. 2. No smell! Game changer! 3. Cat used to leave a litter trail after leaving the old litter box. The has stopped. It is higher and she lands on her cat mat and the litter is stopped there. 4. I am actually using less litter. I over filled in the beginning. Now I have learned how to keep the proper level. 5. Much less litter spillage! I had to constantly sweep the floor. Now, nothing. A purchase that am so happy I made Note: the clear cover is located inside the larger liner bags. It took us a week to find it, because as suggested in other reviews, people didn't use them, so we didn't. Also, I don't know how others used grocery bags on the bottom poop catch drawer. They were just too small. We purchased the custom liners. ... show more
