Catan: Explorers & Pirates includes 5 novel scenarios, each of which builds upon your previous experience. All are easy to learn, rich in character, and lots of fun. In each, you explore an unknown sea by ship and build settlements on the discovered islands. Scenario 1 (“Land Ho!”) introduces you to valuable harbor settlements, shipbuilding, exploration, and overseas settlement—the most important basic rules of this expansion. Each subsequent scenario introduces a new mission and its simple new rules. The game culminates in Scenario 5 (“Explorers & Pirates”), which incorporates all of these very rich new themes in a diverse and exciting campaign of bold exploration and piracy! Explore Catan! Although I’ve only played through the first scenario with my board game group, I can already tell this is going to be a pleasant expansion. It feels so exciting and new! I love the concept of exploring unknown islands and I love the later concepts of pirate lairs, fish gathering, and spice smuggling that I haven’t gotten to you. Overall this expansion offers a world of new content. It may seem overwhelming at first, but each scenario builds off the previous, making it easy to learn in bite sized chunks.     • Be careful punching the pieces
Game is fun. That’s not the issue. The issue is punching out the pieces and hoping nothing tears, especially the discoverable hexes. Guess what? Two of mine had tiny tears in the edges, so it’s not longer possible to have random hexes for those two spots. However, I do have an idea. I think I’ll keep the hexes in a bag and place them on the board as I discover them. It will look not as nice on the table with holes, but it’s a possible solution if you tear the back of the hexes. I think it’s ok to punch out regular pieces, a tear doesn’t matter for those. But anything that needs to be hidden is a tear-able idea (pun intended) and should be prepunched. Not fair as it ruins an entire expansion box I paid 50 dollars for. ... show more

    • Catan is awesome!
Ok so we love Catan! When I saw this was a 2 player expansion I wanted to try it for my husband and I as we are recent empty nesters. When I got the box at home it said 3-4 just like all other Catan games. I decided to keep it since I got it for a Black Friday price. So I will say it is a good thing my son was home from college to help us figure it out and set it up. We could have figured it out but . . . Anyway it suggested you play it at first in increments. It suggest 5 we decided about 3 would have worked. Once you figure out how to add one of the extra things ( fish pirates spices) adding the others is pretty easy. My husband and I do play it with just 2 players and there are so many things going on it does work well. It is a lot to set up so we like to leave it up for a few days . We also vary the ruleS to suit us a little for instance we don’t really use the pirate ship. Anyway my biggest complaint is with so much to set up and having to take pieces from our regular Catan it is pesty. I wish I had a second Catan original game to just keep with this one and if I see Catan on sale again like I did in Black Friday i will buy another one just To keep with this expansion. We have the 5 -6 player expansion and seafarers and it is not an issue mixing pieces but this one has so much to it is a little more cumbersome. It is very different from the original Catan but is is fun especially once you get the hang of it. ... show more

We bought this during quarantine and played every day without fail for months and we're still not sick of it. While we play it a little less now, we still play every chance we get.

I think it’s great because there are many variations in the game, so you’re actually getting a good deal for the money. BUT, if you’re new to Catan, you may want to research other catan boards before considering this one. It’s quite challenging!

    • Amazing addition to base Catan
Important to note that you can not play this game without the original Catan game. It uses pieces from it to build the board, and for game play. We jumped head first into Catan during quarantine and loved it! I mean we played every night! Quickly, we decided to expand our Catan world and after trying to read about the different scenarios on all the other expansion packs, we chose this version as our first expansion. And boy am I glad we did! It’s enough like original Catan so you’re familiar with the rules - but adds enough new elements to make it fun and exciting each time. With 4 different scenarios, and so many ways you can randomize the board, it really is something new every time! The pieces are very well made and the box has a place for everything. You do need to be careful when removing the game pieces initially, as the paper liner will tear if you’re not careful. ... show more

    • Fun extension…makes the game looong though
Not for the faint of heart- this makes Catan take over and hour and a half sometimes. Fun addition though, and relatively easy to learn in steps.
