Description

Three agents are dead and one missing in what was supposed to be a cookie cutter operation in support of the Seventh Fleet's visit to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The culprits initially suspected were members of an Indonesian terrorist group with connections to Al Qaeda. Special Agent Ruben Carver, as the NCIS Case Agent, takes a small, hand picked team to Singapore to begin unraveling the mystery. The story, set in Southeast Asia, is the first book in the Ruben Carver series. A man tolerated by the agency's hierarchy because he's most effective when he lands “in the shit [sic]”. In truth, a six foot two, two hundred and twenty pound shit magnet, who lives by the maxim: “You can never have too many friends or bullets.” Read more

  • Jeffrey Seay's CARVER returns us to those thrilling yet modern days of good-guys in white hats and bad guys with evil intent.
In his first novel, Jeffrey Seay has brought us a true delight in his protagonist, NCIS Special Agent Ruben Carver. The character of Carver had me recalling the strong, silent, dedicated, and competent popular fiction heroes of sixty and seventy years ago. Those like the stalwarts given voice by John Dehner and Bill Conrad in such radio gems as Dehner's "Frontier Gentleman," and "Paladin," and both Dehner and Conrad in the radio version of "Gunsmoke." Even Bill Johnstone ("The Shadow") would have been right at home intoning Carver's dialog. Perhaps it is the Singaporean setting, but I like to think it is Seay's style that brought back to life for me, Louis LAmoure's pre-war Seafarer-Good Guy, Pongo-Jim Mayo, too. Seay manages to evoke the spirit of the old action adventure writers we thought had passed into history long years ago. The plot is likely inspired by a still-pending investigation into alleged ship-husbanding fraud in South-East Asia including a rogue Special Agent character. Hero Carver is detailed to lead a combined counterintelligence/criminal investigative team of NCIS Special Agents into Singapore following the discovery of the bodies of three murdered NCIS Special Agents and the disappearance of a fourth. Seay shows great promise weaving a rip-roaring tale of action and adventure (the rubric "A rollicking good yarn" certainly applies) in both the City-state and nearby Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, triggering the hopes of action-adventure fans for exotic and unusual settings and characters. Action fiction readers will not be disappointed with CARVER, for politically savy, yet politically incorrect hero Ruben Carver does bend the rules, takes justice into his own hands, and violates Agency strictures whenever necessary. All in the interest of keeping the reader's hands busy turning pages in anticipation. If you can suspend disbelief sufficiently to watch the TV series NCIS (or any other TV programme for that matter) and long for the good old days of fictional heroes who were indeed heroic rather than neurotic, you will enjoy the print/electronic book debut of CARVER. Here's looking at you, Jeff.... Looking for your next NOCP (Notice of Carver Published). Disclosure:" I did receive this through AMAZON for Free, after stumbling onto some kind of introductory offer. Doesn't matter, I would have paid for it if necessary. I will gladly pay for the next installment in this series. ... show more

  • Outstanding
Jeffrey Seay’s first novel, CARVER, is a not only a great piece of action writing, it is one of those rare stories that takes you deep into a world you would otherwise never get to see (because if you actually saw it, they would probably have to kill you). Though I have not watched more than a few episodes of the popular series (NCIS), there is nothing romantic or safe about this tale: This is a very different universe. I felt Seay’s description of NCIS operations in Southeast Asia rang with several particularly pragmatic truths. The details of how things work (or not, how they can often be buried under red tape or political expedience) seemed richer and more realistic than anything that could ever be portrayed on television. Seay’s authority as a retired NCIS agent came to the fore in every scene. Without slowing the momentum, he managed to bring us into this shadowy realm with both the burden of its anti-terrorism scope and its political limitations; hence the need for such a straightforward, burn-through-the-bullshit character as Ruben Carver. He’s the man the chain of command may not want to acknowledge as one of their own, but he is also the guy who saves lives, takes out the bad guys, and gets the job done his way. Damn the paperwork, full speed ahead. Two concluding elements I was most impressed with: First, the plot was not an end-to-civilization-as-we-know-it conceit. It dealt with more real-world issues (though Seay cleverly leaves the door open to a possible return of one of the diverted disasters). The second was in the wrapping up of the story. It wasn’t all clean and tidy with a pretty red bow on top. Some bad guys who should have gotten some kind of justice (street or otherwise) got away. And some of the good guys did not have the moment or validation they deserved. Including Ruben. Just like in real life. Some things just don’t add up, are not resolved, and you just have to pick up and move on. Which is what our hero does, and we eagerly look forward to seeing his next move in CHINA CODE. ... show more

  • Carving His Way Through the Bad Guys
I had a chance to meet the author, [author:Jeffrey E. Seay|14582687], a weekend or two ago at the first ever San Diego Festival of Books. He was a nice man and far more willing to listen to my desire to write than sell his books to me. He's also writing out of his experience as an NCIS agent. On that basis, I gave his first book a read. This book starts quickly and keeps from moving front to back cover (though I was reading the Kindle version). It reminded me of a Tom Clancy thriller except substitute Dirty Harry or John McClane (Die Hard) for Jack Ryan. Where Jack was a strict "by the book" law enforcement guy, Ruben Carver was a guy NCIS sent into a dangerous situation to clean it up. "Clean it up" generally meant putting holes into bad guys. I originally stumbled at the beginning of the book because of the numerous characters involved. There is a large cast of characters. I pushed through and, while still not knowing who everyone was, still was able to get the gist of what the author was trying to do. There are a lot of acronyms and federal law enforcement culture to wade through (which the author successfully helps you with). I only found a single typo in the Kindle edition of this book. +1 I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I recommend these books to people who enjoy reading thrillers. ... show more
