  • Detailed comparison of Carhartt gray winter hats
Size: One Size Color: Charcoal Heather
I tend to be fairly picky about my winter hats, living in New England and despising any part of my ears feeling cold. After doing a fair bit of research, it became clear that Carhartt hats were consistently the highest rated. From there, however, I had trouble distinguishing between the following 4 styles: Carhartt Men's Marshfield Wool Hat, Charcoal Heather, One Size Carhartt Men's Fleece 2-In-1 Headwear,Charcoal Heather,One Size - THIS REVIEW Carhartt Men's Akron Hat,Black,One Size Carhartt Men's Firesteel Hat, Charcoal Heather, One Size I decided to purchase all 4, keep the one I liked, and donate the others to charity. This review is specifically to compare these 4 hats in terms of style and warmth. First, an overview of the four and my overall ratings (1 worst, 5 best): Marshfield: 5 Style / 5 Warmth / Small Fit Fleece: 2 Style / 5 Warmth / Average Fit - THIS REVIEW Akron: 3 Style / 3 Warmth / Slightly Large Fit Firesteel: 3 Style / 2 Warmth / Slightly Large Fit For detailed reviews of the other styles, please see my reviews on those pages. Specifically regarding the Fleece... This hat was immediately a very comfortable fit. Not too tight or too loose, it wrapped perfectly around my head with the ear flaps settling properly below my ears and remaining flush against the back of my cheeks (an issue with both the Akron and Firesteel). The bonus with this hat, and what makes it especially valuable, is the pull-out face mask. It remains permanently attached to the interior of the hat (unobtrusive in terms of comfort and appearance) and pulls down to double as a quasi-balaclava. I am able to wear sunglasses underneath it without any bothersome pinch or disturbance of the coverage (note that nose breathing does steam up the glasses a bit with the face mask in place - breathe through your mouth or keep the mask tight to your nostrils). Additionally, unlike my previous winter hat, this particular hat seems to only minimally block hearing (treble sounds mostly transmit clearly). The inside of the hat is the same gray fleece as the exterior (no separate lining), which I find very soft, comfortable, and warm. The lack of separate lining might allow the hat to transmit moisture a bit more easily, but also keeps it fairly thin if worn underneath a waterproof hood. Stylistically, this hat is a fairly bland beanie hat. Style is obviously the more subjective part of my review, but this one doesn't do a ton for me. I'm by no means embarrassed to wear it, but I would categorize it more as functional than stylish. The gray is uniform and the fold-out mask is black. Because of its neutrality, it should go with just about any color jacket. In the end, the face mask made this hat worth as a backup option and especially for colder days where I might be digging out the car. I kept this hat, have worn it a few times, and plan to pull it out as alternative to my favorite of the bunch (the Marshfield). Definitely recommended if you're watching your budget or also find value in the utility of the face mask! ... show more

Great Carhartt quality and incredibly warm and comfortable. Looks great, too. Will come in handy when attending Buffalo Bills games in the winter. Go Bills!

Very cozy and warm. Fits snug and I really like the face covering and ear covers. The different colors are a great choice for a gift.

  • Best all around winter hat out there
Size: One Size Color: Charcoal Heather
Have bought 3 of these and as long as the keep making them this will be my go to winter hat. By far the best all around winter hat out there. The hat more then warm enough for everything other then the most extreme cold Temps, when not wearing it it takes up minimal space in a jacket pocket, the ear flaps and back neck cover actually do what they suppose to. I wear a baseball cap and I can actually put it over it and use them together. It's the first winter hat that I have ever found that I can do that without adjusting one or the other constantly. How ever design this at carhartt definitely needs a raise and plaque on the wall ... show more

  • Form and Function
Size: One Size Color: Brite Lime
The perfect all around cold weather hat. Covers and keeps ears toasty. Face mask can be worn covering mouth and nose, or be worn down under the chin. The stretchy face mask material adds an optional layer of warmth and wind protection over the ears. Very diverse and well thought out. Quality construction. Have used this hat running in below freezing weather and would highly recommend. Too warm for above freezing temps but oh so perfect in freezing conditions. ... show more

  • Super warm and very comfortable!
Size: One Size Color: Charcoal Heather
Overall: This hat keeps your head warm and is comfortable to wear. It folds up easily to fit in a pocket. I would buy it again. Pros: - The hat is nice and thick, and is very warm. - My hat size is around 7 & 3/4 (on the larger end,) and this fits great. I can also stretch the hat a little before putting it on for a little more space. It doesn't squeeze or get uncomfortable like many of the knit hats doo. - The face mask tucks up inside the hat, and you can pull it out quickly if it's cold or windy, and it works great. Cons: - Having the face mask tucked up inside the hat can be a little strange. I try to arrange it so it's laying flat and not wadded up. It doesn't really affect the fit or the comfort though. - It may not be obvious from the pictures, but when you put this on, it really looks like one of the old school leather football helmets, from the early days of football. I suppose this could be a Pro, for some people. Get it in brown and then you can tell people you played on the O-Line for Notre Dame back in the day and folks will be impressed with your manliness. ... show more
