  • Powerful, inspirational, and prophetic words from Taino spiritual leader Miguel Sagué-Machiran.
Canoa: Taino Indigenous Dream River Journey will take you on a voyage that will inspire you to connect to your own roots and ancestral history, whether they are roots from the Americas or from other parts of the world. In this visionary text, Taino spiritual leader Miguel Sagué-Machiran describes a river trip he took, traveling the length of the Allegheny River from its origin at the New York state / Pennsylvania border to the place where it joins the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh, a trip of 250 miles. Along with the physical voyage he took in his canoe “Peapod,” Sagué-Machiran took a spiritual voyage as he encountered dream/vision echoes from his own people’s history as they experienced love, cruelty at the hands of the invaders to their lands, spiritual transformation, and as they dug deep to find the strength to stand up for themselves and their values, energized by their visceral connection to their ancestors and the spiritual beings whom they honored and with whom they walked as part of their life-journeys. As you read of the stories from the past and of Sagué-Machiran’s own life stories, you will get a taste of life-ways of the Taino people and how they continue to be relevant and inspirational to this day. You will learn of prophecies that relate to not only the resurgence of the Taino ways and how they bring about balance and whole-health in the lives of Tainos and all who feel the touch of the Taino spirit beings, but also, you will learn about prophecies that relate to what is happening today in our world’s culture. Finally, as you read of how Sagué-Machiran was led to reconnect with the teachings of his ancestors, you will be inspired to connect to the physical and/or spiritual roots that draw you in and that lead you toward the promise of spiritual balance and wholeness. ... show more

  • Life Changing Book
I am only half way through this remarkable and visionary book and already I feel compelled to write a review. The author is a bard, poet, story teller and a curandero of the highest order, and he is transmitting the remarkable wisdom, literature and dances of Taino, Yoruba, Mayan and Pennsylvanian sources integrated with personal experience, contemporary science and a multi-layered and well crafted narrative. Kudos and congratulations to this author for transmitting this vibrant and healing wisdom! I find myself reading the book at different speeds - deep and slow puts me into a trance like state, not unlike that described in the lucid dreams of the narrator. At other times I rush headlong through it, wanting more and more. The dream sequences put the "realism" back into "Magical Realism" and they offer the incredible hope that the healing of the epoch commenced by Columbus in Hispaniola in 1492 can be reckoned with, healed, and transcended. Anyone feeling the pull of social justice on the contemporary planet will be humbled and amazed as they explore the depths of the colonialist trauma and the magnitude of the Taino hope. Any reader interested in the deeper history of our current evolutionary moment will be transformed by this book. A must read. ... show more

  • Wow! Just Wow!
As a Taino from Boriken searching for the teachings and understandings of my Ancestors, I found this book to not only to be a work of art, but it also has taken me on a journey towards spiritual growth. Much of Behike Miguel's experiences allowed me to see and understand how my own journey throughout my 39 years of life are leading me back to my Ancestors as well as the beliefs that they had. Jajoma Behike Miguel! ... show more

  • Highly recommended!
Canoa is an amazing book! Taino shaman, Miguel Sobaoko Koromo Sagué seamlessly weaves his dreams and visions like colorful, textured interlocking threads through shamanic ripples in time, and shares them with his readers. We share in shamanic dream-visioning that offers us clear glimpses of his Taino Indigenous ancestral history and the colonial vestiges of his native Santiago, Cuba as well as his contemporary life in the Pennsylvania, USA. We travel with Miguel and his companion, Sven as they journey in a canoe down the Allegheny River. We simultaneously experience the beauty, challenges and discomfort of their journey. He describes emerging memories of deep, personal and universal challenges and triumphs of his Taino ancestors: colonization, assertion of identity and continuity of their cultural and spiritual traditions. The book lends credence to the importance of the contemporary, ongoing Taino Indigenous Resurgence Movement as well, in which the author is a respected historical authority, spiritual elder and teacher. An overarching theme in the book is the personal struggle with the Spirit of Negativity, a theme with which we all can identify. I found this to be a fascinating, culturally relevant work and a work relevant to our present challenging times. Very educational, entertaining, and even suspenseful, Canoa delivers. It was hard to put down! I highly recommend it! ... show more
