  • Our senior puppy LOVES it - Best purchase we've made!
This was the BEST investment we've made for our senior puppy. She's a 10 year old beagle (~29 lbs) but had a prior neck surgery and shoulder injury that we still have yet to work her up to her normal walk distance. Previously when she was recovering from surgery, I had searched dog strollers and was only able to find dog strollers mostly for toy dogs that are less than 15 lbs. At the time (2010), I purchased a regular baby stroller which the seat was able to fold flatter and support weights up to 70 lbs. Problem is when she feels better, she doesn't want to ride in the stroller and tries to launch herself out of it because she wants to walk - which normally is OK, but not when her physical activity is restricted per doctor's orders. Now I wish I hadn't wasted money on the regular stroller (which makes us look a little crazy, too). But it did beat taking her out and then having to carry her 29 lbs back depending on how far the walk took us. This past weekend, we had a trip to NYC for an event and I was concerned about leaving her in the hotel for the majority of the trip versus taking her but her getting tired and achy. In the recent past, I would occasionally look to see if there are any new dog strollers on the market and got more serious about looking as our trip was coming up. I started to see other bike trailer/strollers for heavier dogs (ie > 15-20 lbs) that were less expensive, but many complaints about the bottom floor not being supportive and also being on the heavier side and not convenient for travel if collapsing it would be complicated. I stumbled upon this one and though the price made me hesitate a second, but the reviews for this trailer were much better than the other ones that were less expensive. Then adding in the convertibility to a stroller and being lighter weight and easy to collapse, I thought, why not bite the bullet and try this out. It came promptly in 2 days (love Amazon Prime!). I was really excited about putting everything together immediately that night. We opted for the 2 wheel version since the 1 wheel version seemed to jut out a lot in front particularly as we were going to an event and didn't want to accidentally trip people. Assembly was not too difficult - I felt the instructions were sufficient, however, I might be a proficient IKEA customer :). It weighs about 25-30 lbs (about the weight of my dog) and was easy to collapse and assemble for travel. She LOVED it. We souped up her ride by putting in her crate pad to cushion the floor, getting the stroller kit (2 wheels), a portable fan clipped into the bars inside the top, her food/water bowls and a stroller pouch for mom and dad to have cup holders/place to put our phone or sunblock(see below for some links). When people came by and saw her little set up, they were jealous and wanted to be her! Granted there were times when she sits back and enjoys, and other times when she wants out, but when she got tired, she liked being able to get back in and ride. As others have mentioned, there is a slight incline when the 2 stroller wheels are attached, that the front is higher than the back. When we first got her in the wagon or if she leans towards the back of the stroller, she ends up popping a wheelie. So we generally lift her into it and don't let her step into it. Or if one lets the dog step into it, definitely hang on to it. Also as others have mentioned, there is one wheel in the front that sometimes is in the air, but when she sits more towards the front, that wheel will come down. Our solution to get her to sit towards the middle was to put her food bowls towards the back. I also put my purse/camera bag at the front to weigh down the front as well. At her size, she had plenty of space to sit wherever she wanted, lay down or curl up. All 4 sides are vented, and the front and back can be opened. The front flap has clips on either side to close that down while the back flap is larger and are elastic loops. Both the front and back have a plastic cover that we rolled up and velcroed out of place (comes with 2 velcro loops per flap). The stroller kit came with the 2 front wheels, but also this loop - and at first I didn't understand why we needed this loop which had a small loop at one end and a larger one that can fit around your wrist, but attached it onto the handle bar anyway. Turns out this past weekend, NYC was the windy city! There were a few times the wind was able to push the stroller so I was glad to have that loop to hang onto when I need my hands free. When the stroller is put up, there is a seat for the upper bar to sit on the lower bar with 2 large clips that hold these two bars together which meet at the peak of the wagon. For when we packed up, we collapsed the stroller and used it as a cart. Granted, I think some people put things inside of it when it's not collapsed, but we collapsed it and put things on top of it with the caveat that things on top can't be too heavy on the structural bars. Since the crate couldn't fit inside the cart, but happened to sit inside the outline of the structural bars, it was perfect. We left the handle on til we got the car. Removed the handle and threw the wagon into the cargo area of my SUV (Toyota 4Runner) with all the wheels on which fit exactly in alittle over 1/2 of the cargo area perpendicular to the door (parallel to the vehicle). I think some people take off the wheels, but we were able to leave them on and have storage area for our other baggage. I lost track of how many times we got compliments on the trailer/stroller, and how many times my husband and I told each other that this was SO worth the cost. Now we plan to take her out more during the week. Typically during the week she's been home alone all day, we get home, feed and walk her and then say "we'll be back soon" and she looks so dejected about us leaving again. Now we can take her on the trails.. May also eventually hook it up to a bike like what it was originally intended for :) Links to the other products we added to this wagon as well as pictures from this past weekend!. • well worth the price, miles above the rest
When we were looking for a dog-specific bike trailer, I first went to Burley's product line because I had previously owned their Nomad cargo trailer. I was impressed by the design and quality of that trailer, so I knew this Tail Wagon would be no different. Burley's aren't cheap, but in my experience, you always get what you pay for with their products. Still, I wanted to shop around. A friend at my local bike shop suggested that I look at a few different product lines that also make dog trailers, and they were indeed much cheaper, but the reviews were all over the map - plus I just didn't care for the look of other brands' offerings. In the end, I bit the bullet on the Burley, and couldn't be happier. The construction is characteristically top-notch Burley. Right out of the box, all you have to do is pop up the frame, attach the quick release wheels, slide on the hitch, and you're ready to go. Mine was already on my bike within 20 minutes of first opening the box. There is ample ventilation for your dog, and the bottom floor is rigid and removable for cleaning. Also nice is the roll-away clear vinyl covers for the front and rear windows. The side battens are stiff and reinforced with dowel rods to prevent your dog from leaning into the sides and causing the material to rub against the wheels. I like the wheel protector bars that keep the trailer from snagging violently on any obstacles. The tail gate features two different configurations for the safety of your dog. One option allows you to keep the tail gate attached and allows quicker entry and exit, but may allow smaller dogs to push their way out through the opening. Our dog did this on his very first time in the trailer. Fortunately, Burley planned for this and suggests the 2nd option where you attach the tail gate on the outside of the main cover, which prevents the dog from escaping out the back. The only drawback is that it takes just a few seconds longer to get your dog in and out this way. As for size, we have a 25 lb. mini Aussie and the trailer interior is perfect for him. I'd say this trailer would work well for dogs up to about 40 lbs, but to me it looks like it would be a bit too small and cramped for dogs much taller than 18" at the withers (shoulders). The reason being, the way the top tapers down at the front and rear, there's actually only a very small portion of the interior that is at full height. Our other dog, who is 75 lbs and about 22" tall would definitely NOT fit in this trailer. I'd say dogs roughly the size of average border collies would be maximum for this... dogs as big as labs or shepherds would probably be much too large for this trailer. If you have a large dog, you may want to consider a different trailer, or different option altogether. My only issues with this trailer have to do with the little accessories that come with it, versus the ones that are offered separately. First off, the instruction manual talks about the included blinky light and light mount, but mine did not actually come with that... not sure why not. Maybe it was just an oversight when they packed it. Also included is a safety flag (which I suppose is nice if you don't mind those), and the detachable handle for when you convert the trailer into stroller mode. The inclusion of this large, awkward handle assembly is confusing to me because you still have to order the small front wheel separately if you want to use this option. Without that little stroller wheel for the front of the hitch, the handle assembly is useless. SUGGESTION TO BURLEY: Instead of the stroller handle, why not include the kickstand attachment? That seems to make much more sense to me as a practical accessory if you're going to include one. The kickstand would definitely come in handy for when you want to introduce your dog to the trailer and train him to get in and out on command. Otherwise, you have to either prop the front up on a sturdy raised surface, or go ahead and attach it to your bike. If you have a dog that is completely new to something like this, having an unstable trailer or one that may shift around while attached to a bike could be detrimental to getting them comfortable with the trailer. ... show more

  • Dogs love it
My two small dogs loved their first ride in it. If you have a dog who loves a slow car ride, they will probably love this trailer. Shipping was fast, showing up three days earlier than promised. The only reason this didn’t get five stars is it showed up with a broken reflector. Thankfully, it’s the front one, but still annoying since I will also use it as a stroller for them. ... show more
